Who watches this? Its aired on NBC and the name of the program is Dateline. Basically, they have undercover cops pretending to be underage kids to catch pedophiles. Do you think that this show will stop pedophiles from preying on underage boys and girls? |

No. I mean, it may slow down a few. But it won't stop them. They'll just think of other ways to have sex with children. |

No. I mean, it may slow down a few. But it won't stop them. They'll just think of other ways to have sex with children.
(This show has been on at least a year or more. Every week they show these guys getting caught. They are still doing it.
They can't HELP theyselves! I mean they show them walking up to the house from a camera outside, and everyone of them, from their body language, looks like he's on his way to do something wrong!

They almost look Pavlovian in what they're doing. Like they've gotten so condition to chasing kids, they almost couldn't stop even if they TRY. |

I had no idea it had airing for that long. I'm just discovering it. And from the looks of it, this program can go on forever if they let it.
You notice how the guys tell that same lie, that they were just "joking around" when they told the alleged teen online that they wanted to have anal and oral sex LOL

Pity these programs do not feature the bigger threat to folks' children in terms of molestation and sexual exploitation: people they already know in their family, friendship and community circles. I guess staking out family reunions and community soccer teams wouldn't have the same emotional impact or something. |

Very true. This program is rather commercial and seems almost gleeful in its tone; it's more about entrapment than doing good. And high ratings are undoubtedly its first priority. IMO |

That is so true, we have the same problem over here. People always assume that the person who is most likely to hurt your kids is the strange guy wearing a mac on a street corner but moelstation, especially sexual, happens the majority of the time in the home.
We have a lot of scare mongering going on. Yesterday we had a front page spread in one of our most popular tabloids which spent eight hours in a courtroom reviewing cases involving paedophiles. Maybe it is to sensationalise or to shock but I think it would be often better spent looking at dangers in the home. A lot of people attribute the rise in obesity in young children to the fact that parents are too scared to let their kids play outside. Therefore, sitting them in front of the television and letting the playstation be the babysitter is far easier.
I read an article the other day about child sexual abuse stories that became a popular read in the 1980s (a lot like the Dave Pelzer stories and the ones that followed became hugely successful) and one of the reasons given was because they were written in an almost 'erotic' way, very over the top language used and melodramatic. I doubt that is what is being done here but I found this point very interesting. Maybe this programme is jumping on the 'child sex abuse' bandwagon that has been circulating for the last few years. I don't know how recently this programme was created but lest we forget that there have been several new cases of kidnapped children being found and rescued from their captors. This programme sounds like it might have the same 'bravado' feel. |

well, first of all the guys they taget on the "to catch a predator" show ARE NOT PEDOPHILES.
in the online conversations the person posing as a teen, ALWAYS says they are 13 or older.
anyone with a BASIC education knows that 13 year olds are not PRE-PUBECSENT children.
PEDOPHILES ARE ATTRACTED TO PRE-PUBECSENT CHILDREN.
even if these guys were attempting to have some kind of relationship woth the people they "thought" they were talking to, they would still NOT BE PEDOPHILES.
secondly, the people who have REAL intentions of somehow "sexually abusing or manipulating minors" would NOT go into detail about what they want to/or are going to do with these "minors".
the guys that are "stupid" enough to actually get caught up in this "ratings dog and pony show", always describe what they would like to do with this "minor".
the people who are REALLY a threat to "minors" or even children, are not going to discuss their intentions online.
the people who are really out to sexually "prey" on youth, are the last people you would expect.
i don't know if anyone on this board has ever done any research about TRUE sexual predators.
these sexual predators are usually very intelligent people who are involved in SUPER SECRET clandestine activities in order to fufill their sexual desire for youth.
in SIMPLE words- true sexual predators in our society are far to intelligent to get caught up in these stings.
the people on "to catch a predator", are just basically horny, stupid guys.
the people who are a true threat to youth sexually are NEVER touched by a progran like "to catch a predator".
"to catch a predator" is just an attempt to sensationalize an issue (that people are emotional about) and get ratings.
but these show do NOTHING to prevent the TRUE threats to youth sexually.
are these guys who get caught up in this show stupid?
YES, they are.
should these guys be online trying to talk to "minors" about sexual topics?
NO, they should not be.
but are these guys "predators" or actual "threats" to minors?
i seriously doubt it.
if it was not for some adult PRETENDING to be a "youth", i don't think these guys would get in the situation they are in.
and lets not forget that the show "to catch a predator" NEVER lets the viewing audience see the ENTIRE transcript of the conversation between the 'predator' (horny, stupid guy) and the "minor" (paid adult actor).
better believe that there are elements of entrapment present in these conversations.
im sure these guys are so schocked when they are caught (doing what im not sure), they don't even question the whole process.
they just want to get it over with as fast as possible.
the group (perverted justice) that is involved in these "set-ups", gets funding to do these type of set-ups.
lets not be fooled, the show "to catch a predator" is a RATINGS GAME, nothing more.
the people on these shows (who get caught) are minimal "threats" to anyone, and i doubt they are "predators".
they are NOT pedophiles.
the word "pedophile" is used in our day to envoke fear and hatred.
throw out the word "pedophile", and the masses of people are ready to kill.
but the word is rarely used correctly, and is largely misunderstood.
"to catch a predator" is a LIE.
and the show is almost crossing the line (im sure they have in the past) between what is legal and what is criminal.
but hey, ANYTHING to get ratings!!!!!!!!! |
