March 6, 2007
Disinvitation by Obama Is Criticized

By JODI KANTOR

CHICAGO, March 5 — The Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., senior pastor of the popular Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago and spiritual mentor to Senator Barack Obama, thought he knew what he would be doing on Feb. 10, the day of Senator Obama’s presidential announcement.

After all, back in January, Mr. Obama had asked Mr. Wright if he would begin the event by delivering a public invocation.

But Mr. Wright said Mr. Obama called him the night before the Feb. 10 announcement and rescinded the invitation to give the invocation.

“Fifteen minutes before Shabbos I get a call from Barack,” Mr. Wright said in an interview on Monday, recalling that he was at an interfaith conference at the time. “One of his members had talked him into uninviting me,” Mr. Wright said, referring to Mr. Obama’s campaign advisers.

Some black leaders are questioning Mr. Obama’s decision to distance his campaign from Mr. Wright because of the campaign’s apparent fear of criticism over Mr. Wright’s teachings, which some say are overly Afrocentric to the point of excluding whites.

Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, said the campaign disinvited Mr. Wright because it did not want the church to face negative attention. Mr. Wright did however, attend the announcement and prayed with Mr. Obama beforehand.

“Senator Obama is proud of his pastor and his church, but because of the type of attention it was receiving on blogs and conservative talk shows, he decided to avoid having statements and beliefs being used out of context and forcing the entire church to defend itself,” Mr. Burton said.

Instead, Mr. Obama asked Mr. Wright’s successor as pastor at Trinity, the Rev. Otis Moss III, to speak. Mr. Moss declined.

In recent weeks, word of Mr. Obama’s treatment of Mr. Wright has reached black leaders like the Rev. Al Sharpton and given them pause.

“I have not discussed this with Senator Obama in detail, but I can see why callers of mine and other clergymen would be concerned, because the issue is standing by your own pastor,” Mr. Sharpton said.

Mr. Wright’s church, the 8,000-member Trinity United Church of Christ, is considered mainstream — Oprah Winfrey has attended services, and many members are prominent black professionals. But the church is also more Afrocentric and politically active than standard black congregations.

Mr. Wright helped organize the 1995 Million Man March on Washington and along with other United Church of Christ ministers was one of the first black religious leaders to protest apartheid and welcome gay and lesbian worshippers.

Since Mr. Obama made his presidential ambitions clear, conservatives have drawn attention to his close relationship to Mr. Wright and to the church’s emphasis on black empowerment. Tucker Carlson of MSNBC called the precepts “racially exclusive” and “wrong.” Last week, on the Fox News program “Hannity & Colmes,” Erik Rush, a conservative columnist, called the church “quite cultish, quite separatist.”

In Monday’s interview, Mr. Wright expressed disappointment but no surprise that Mr. Obama might try to play down their connection.

“When his enemies find out that in 1984 I went to Tripoli” to visit Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, Mr. Wright recalled, “with Farrakhan, a lot of his Jewish support will dry up quicker than a snowball in hell.” Mr. Wright added that his trip implied no endorsement of either Louis Farrakhan’s views or Qaddafi’s.

Mr. Wright said that in the phone conversation in which Mr. Obama disinvited him from a role in the announcement, Mr. Obama cited an article in Rolling Stone, “The Radical Roots of Barack Obama.”

According to the pastor, Mr. Obama then told him, “You can get kind of rough in the sermons, so what we’ve decided is that it’s best for you not to be out there in public.”

Patrick Healy contributed reporting from Washington.

Obama slights his own pastor, another error in wooing blacks

excerpt:

Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, responded that Obama is "proud of his pastor and his church," but defended the decision.

"Obama decided to avoid having statements and beliefs being used out of context and forcing the entire church to defend itself," Burton told me -- the exact language he used with The New York Times.

In any event, Wright shouldn't have to defend himself or his church.

Trinity, the church home for countless black professionals, has been at the forefront of social justice issues, and was the first church to organize protests against South Africa's apartheid.

More important, Wright is more than capable of defending his teachings. He also understands the political climate in which Obama has to operate. So it wouldn't have been unreasonable for Obama to pull him to the side and caution him to temper his public remarks that day.

But Obama took some bad advice...

Tonya,

Though not a member, I've visited Trinity a couple of times. And I know many of its members. And from what I've seen and witnessed, Rev. Wright and Trinity seems less about segregating from Whites and MORE about promoting Black power, advancement and esteem.

But most adult Black foks who've been around the block awhile know how many White foks distort most ANY of our efforts to create some forms of independence from massah into our wanting to burn down the White House.

And Obama's running for the Presidency of the United States. A country that is 87% NON-BLACK. He has to be careful about the degree/instances which he is publically associated with that which the (punka$$) Tucker Carlson's of the world can spin into some sh*t that does not necessarily reflect what he thinks and does.

So perhaps Obama's error is NOT his rescinding the offer to Wright. Perhaps his error is he should NOT have extended it to Wright to begin with.

I am very suspicious of how the (so-called) Black leadership - religious and not - critique Barack Obama.

I mean, are they REALLY concerned about whether Obama meteoric political climb will harm Black foks?

Are they so pissed that Obama has come from nowhere to become to Americans what they think they had earned more of a right to be that they'll even sink to sabotaging his presidential bid?

Or are they, again, honoring their (largely quid pro quo) alliances with Bill & Hillary Clinton?

And notice how as these fair/thoughtful Black leaders criticize Obama, they quite noticeably AVOID saying anything about Obama's actual RECORD as a politician. (Again. What foks DON'T say is often MORE important than what they do say.)

PS: It's interesting that Rev. Wright is being cast as a Black segregationalist considering he and his Trinity United Church of Christ has received MILLIONS of bucks from the (VERY) WHITE Mayor of Chicago Richard Daley over the years. I mean, Trinity is afforded consideration that FEW of all but the biggest White-owned Chicago businesses and organizations are denied.

Hell. If anything, one can argue that Wright has been MORE connected to White foks than his teachings and rhetoric appear to portray.

Am,

Before even knowing this about the church I KNEW Carlson was way off base because he's a liar and a racist and even when he's not flat-out lying he's greatly exaggerating.

Tonya,

Yeah. But what's unfortunate is that that pissa$$ Tucker Carlson is allowed to spew his hateful lies and unfounded rumors/innuendo EVERYDAY via one of the most popular cable TV stations.

It's mofos like him that help keep foks (especially WHITE ones) mired in hatred, confusion and mediocrity.

Abm,

I agree. I don't think Carlson can be blamed for the way Obama handled things with his pastor though. I understand why Obama did what he did, it is politics, sometimes you gotta do some dirty shit. Still, he probably should have chosen another way.

Tonya,

Well. This is the stuff you hate about politics. How it can turn even the best of foks into devils.

Because I suspect what happen was Obama's primary inclination and desire was to have his Rev, whom he likely greatly respect and love, stand up for him. But one of his 'analysts' - foks hellbent on nitpicking the sh*t of EVERYTHING - deduced that the Tucker Carlson's of the world would use Wright's presence to smear their candidate.

Sadly, though, by pulling the plug on Wright, Obama swapped one set of problems for another.

What I wish had happened here were Wright, his people and other so-called Black leaders tacitly acknowledged what they all know (or should have known) went down, and thought fairly enuff of how Barack has conducted his work and business to cut him some slack.

But then, there ain't much media time and attention given to that kind of discretion. Is there?

Trinity Church, whose congregation is rather "bougie" does, nevertheless, have a very Afro-Centric flavor, and its fiery minister Jeremiah Wright is undeniably to the left of center and is a caustic critic of white racism. Quotes from his speeches and sermons could certainly be a detriment to Obama's campaign to win the vote of moderate white America. I attended a MLK banquet once where Wright was the after dinner speaker and, boy, he rivaled Farrakhan in his militancy! I wasn't aware that he was closely-allied with Chicago's Mayor Daley but he may be among the black ministers who pay lip-service to the mayor for practical reasons. This was a lapse in judgment on the part of Barak to allow his close friendship with Jeremiah to impulsively invite this minister to precede the announcement of Obama's presidential run with a sermon.

If that's Wright pictured above he looks damn near white, so him speaking or introducing or whatever he was going to do at the announcement ceremony probably wouldn't have had much of an impact. Was he going to give a Black power speech or something??? I doubt it. Obama can do whatever he wants, but this episode of "I want you to come, well no, I don't want you to come, one of my advisors has advised me that you shouldn't come" is just more evidence of flakiness, wishy-washiness, can't-make-up-my-mindedness that we do NOT need in a potential leader. I haven't been following all the presidential campaigns, but it seems that Obama has an inordinate amount of negative drama going on. And I'm starting to doubt that this is because he's a Black man. He's bringing all this bullshit upon himself.

Depends on what you define as "drama" and "inordinate."

And I'm starting to doubt that this is because he's a Black man. He's bringing all this bullshit upon himself.

On that, we disagree. You find most lint where you shine the most light. If anything, some of the other candidates are relieved that the light is shining away from them. (...For the time being...)

The following are what I define as drama:

-- The mixie drama.

-- His terrorist sounding name drama.

-- His radical Islamic education drama.

-- The confessed drug use drama.

-- His momma-people owned slaves drama.

-- His parking ticket drama.

-- His pedophile lawsuit drama.

-- The above disinviting and alienating his church drama.

-- His financial investments drama.

-- His wife has his ass hen-pecked drama.

When he hasn't even been campaigning for thirty days. And I'm not even including any of his politics!!!

Not all black churchs have radical ministers like Wright. And, actually, I am inclined to believe that he tailors his sermons to his audiences. He also has a very interesting and impressively resume and was a whole slew of other things before he became a minister. He is a brilliant worldly man who probably is as qualified to run for president as Barak. He would make a good behind-the-scenes advisor and liaisan to the black clergy.

I say he get some new advisors because the Black church is perhaps his most publicized tie to the Black community and so it probably wasn't a good idea to piss-off this minister and/or do anything that might alienate Black church goers.

Tonya,

I have a lot of respect to for prior and curent contributions the Black churches. But I'm quickly reaching the point where I feel the Black church as a large, macroscopic institution is outliving it's former necessity and benefit.

Because our churches tend to have too much resources and power WITHOUT any real accountability for what they FAIL to do and provide for those they bill themselves as representing.

I mean, putting aside whether or not you'll vote for Obama, does his pulling the plug on his preacher speaking at his announcement REALLY warrant Black foks deciding to not support his presidential candidacy?

Consider: the majority of the black churches are conservative, but at the same time they represent the so-called black leadership.

Trinity church, it seems, is more 'progressive' than these other churches, and that among black churches many of the so-called black leaders within these congregations WOULD NOT embrace Africa or gays and lesbians. Consequently, they do not support Trinity Church, and would be attacking Obama because they don't think he'll win anyway, and what a chip to bargain with Hilary during the National Democratic Convention. This back door support would help places some of blacks' objectives on the Democratic Party's platform.

Thus, it will be hypocritical if these so-called black leaders try to criticize Obama for not 'sticking by your pastor,' when they majority of black church leaders are homophobic and often either anti-african or indifferent.

Now...

I'm not a regular church attendee nor am I a fan of most churches, but the type of decisions Obama make matters a great deal to potential voters, I think. Because everyone’s looking for a candidate that can win the general election (which is easy for NO ONE), and, despite what you or I think about the Black church, as a candidate vying for (the bulk of) "the Black vote," if Obama can't figure out that many people of varying degrees of faith make up a HUGE part of the Black vote, that's a HUGE problem imo. You got to KNOW and respect that.

Tonya,

I suspect your concerns about Black churchgoers is dead-on. I just think we've reach a point where it's becoming ridiculous for Black foks to remain so a$$punked by the VANITY of our Church pastors.

Hell. Obama rescinded an invitation to Rev. Wright. He didn't piss on all the elderly members of their Inspirational Choir or something.

Really. I'm getting really fed up with so-called religious Black foks.

Bush was elected president largely based on the idiocacy of so-called Christians (some BLACK) fearing gays would marry (like any of us should really give a gotdayam if they do). We're fighting a friggin' war in Iraq largely for religious reasons. We're all gonna get the fuhk blown up...'cause of religious reasons.

I swear, if it weren't for GOD, I'd turn Atheist decades ago.

Tell me. What percentage of the foks who are going to b*tch/moan about what Obama did with Rev. Wright are going to spend any appreciable amount of time studying the man's record, his prospective positions, etc.?

Again. I say his mistake was less about his rescinding the offer to Wright and more about his offering to him to begin with. If Obama's going to play the political spin game, let's hope he learns to politically look BEFORE he leaps.

Yeah, well, regardless of what you think about them, they vote, much more than none church goers might I add. So I wouldn't give Obama advice that I wouldn't give Hilary or McCain regarding the Christian vote. And, to me, it doesn't make a difference when the Christians are Black, they deserve the same respect as White Evangelicals and I’m pretty sure they demand such.
I also believe that they know as much about the candidates as the white Christians that vote.

Btw, what church have you been to where you can just piss on the preacher and not get fucked up?

I just which Christians - White, Black or Brown - would start to try to think for their dayamselves. And reading something other than what passah say they should read might be a good start.

Hey, I'm just as frustrated as you are with them. Not cuz I have a problem with what they stand for or WHY they stand for such. My beef is with the mixing of religion & politics - legislating morality - this should NEVER happen, imo. I don't want some mofo telling me how to live my life, especially thru the weapon that was used to enslave Black people - (Christianity/The Bible). But if telling them what they wanna hear is the only way to win their votes, whatcha gonna do??

He's no less qualified than President Bush
or Bill Clinton for that matter---a High School
Principal could effectively be President now
that the job requires so little.

Like I said, you're all entitled your own
"campaign horse"---but it's seriously TACKY
the way you keep pretending that Barack is
some sinister "soul-less" ghoul whose risen
up out of your laundry hamper to do exactly
what...that hasn't been done before?

Obama isn't SCREWING black people, but your
posts ABOUT HIM are.

I think the BLACK CHURCH, which
is "dead"...has a lot worse things
to worry about than OBAMA.

Kola,

Tonya's on some serious feministic trip that's so skrong it pretty much taints her view of any Black man, especially one whom some White foks appear to like.

And I don't think you you even have to ask why it's cool for her to revile Barack while supporting Hillary Clinton. That there's some residual slave sh*t.

The sista in your pic was just using what she got to try to catch a good Christian man during Morning Service.

ABM, I love Tonya---always have and will--and I can definitely respect her opinion about supporting someone else,

but the level of Obama-bashing on this board just proves what I've always said about the people here.

Since he can't possibly "WIN", then why all the bitching and ni66er-whining?

Kola,

There's b*tching because they've got so much slave on the brain their offended that a (partially) Black man would have the audacity to actually EXPECT to be elected president. And they're afraid his campaign will mess things up for "Miss Anne" Hillary Clinton.

Well, kola, I guess ABM's BS* about Hillary did reduce you to a quivering pile of dung that claims to "understand" since you yourself have previously fawned over Hillary and supported the idea of her running for president, peeing on yourself because your name came up as a possible member of a support group for her campaign.
*nobody else on this board, female or male has endorsed or shown a lot of enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton.

Since people who reserve judgment on Obama are constantly being excoriated by his groupies, how well do his supporters stand up to scrutiny themselves? Instead of analysing Obama, they are mired down in analysing those who adopt a "wait-and-see" position about backing him. These Obama zealots can't see for looking. They lack foresight. And having foresight is very important when considering this man's election.

Kola,

I love too, but you seem to think I care about your perception of my posts on Obama, when honestly, I don't. Your scathing remarks mean as much to me as Abm's. Sorry.
