African designers ditch skinny models
On a continent where thousands regularly go hungry, emaciated models sporting luxury designer dresses can seem a little unappetising.
Which is why designers and fashionistas in South Africa are joining a global backlash against size 0 models, ditching skinny girls for womanly curves and celebrating the prominent African bottom during Johannesburg fashion week this month.
"I think the girls here are more athletic," Paul Jackson, chief executive at Leisureworx, the organisers of Africa's first autumn/winter show, said.
Last week's London Fashion Week was dominated by debate over the body shape of the models after organisers decided not to ban stick thin women from the catwalks, but urged designers to use only healthy models.
Mr Jackson says while the South Africans would not allow unhealthy models on the runway, they had not needed to send any home since local designers naturally opted for a more rounded look.
"Some of those girls from Europe just look emaciated but we have a different look here," he said in a Reuters interview.
Accentuating curves
One of South Africa's top labels, Stoned Cherrie, pinched in waists with giant African print belts for an hour glass look, drawing a standing ovation at a show last week.
Skirts accentuated the curvy hips of her mostly black models and plunging necklines showed off ample cleavage.
While some slender models sported elegant evening gowns, Stoned Cherrie also used more buxom women to celebrate the fuller shapes that are still highly prized in many traditional African societies.
As young black South African women get richer, some are slimming down to western ideals of beauty and shunning the traditional 'African' look approved by Mma Precious Ramotswe, the generously proportioned heroine of Alexander McCall Smith's Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency novels.
But the uber-skinny look has yet to take off among black women in South Africa - partly because the prevalence of HIV and the stigma it attracts means women are keen to look healthy and well-fed, and partly thanks to a new found pride in being African.
"For South African black women who grew up under apartheid, we know we're not going to have straight hair, we know we're not going to be as skinny as some of those white girls, and we're happy with that," Busi Dlamini, 27, a curvy urban hipster dressed in a Kenyan sarong and funky red accessories, said.
Her comments were echoed by Nigerian-born designer Duro Olowu who proved a surprise hit in London last week with curvaceous, hip-swinging women in bold African-inspired patterns.
"If a woman can't look good in something that's a size 8 or a size 14 then it's the garment, not the woman," he said.

It will be interesting to see how the fashion industry responses if what's occurring in South Africa begins to catch on throughout more of the world.
Because I've had a couple of theories about why the fashion industry prizes the waif/anorexic-look:
@ The mostly gay men who run the fashion industry begrudge and, thus, loathe the more natural curviness of women.
@ And (I'm going SERIOUS conspiracy theory here) gays seek to use their curveless, boyish-looking view of women to blur the visual lines of the sexes to such a degree that it become more acceptable/palatable to the masses to equally view women and men as potential mates and lovers. |
