I rereading this essay by Danzy Senna called Mulatto Millennium. While I've read it before, I didn't remember this particular paragraph pertaining to the one-drop rule. She states:

Let it be clear--my parents' decision to raise us as black wasn't based on any one-drop rule from the days of slavery [this is historically incorrect by the way], and it certainly wasn't based on our appearance, that crude reasoning many black-identified mixed people use: if the world sees me as black, I must be black...Instead, my parents' decision arose out of the rising black power movement, which made identifying as black not a pseudoscientific rule but a conscious choice. You told us all along that we had to call ourselves black because of this socalled one-drop. Now that we don’t have to anymore, we choose to. Because black is beautiful. Because black is not a burden, but a privilege.

Yukio,

I'm happy for her she can conveniently make that choice.

Most of the rest of us Black foks are what we are less by choice than by chance.

White people determine who is Black for exclusionary purposes. It's not as if a mixie can decide he's going to go and live in the white world and be accepted as a white person, because that's not happening (unless he looks white and can fool the white people).

mariah carey IS BLACK.

a person does not have to look like alek (ugly as hell) wek, to be black.

mariah carey's father is black, she is his daughter, so she is black.

hmmm...i think its interesting, obviously since I started the thread. But, I think it more than a matter of convenience. If we look at the issue historically, then what some of you call a convenient choice is a decision that many 'undisputedly black' people would choose not to make. Many 'undisputedly black' folk would choose to be white. I think that is what is interesting about the quote.

Serenasailor: who are you talking about? no one here stated any preferences. you are speakin out of your ass, here.

"The rising Black Power movement". Right when Black people fought to rise in rank to positions of power. Hmmmm. It is an interesting...choice.

LOL...Tonya, I was thinking the same thing.

It reminded me of a story my mother told me weeks ago about a Reader's Digest story of a man who chose to be "white" and not speak to his family again....until he found out that his wealthy grandfather was dying and left money. But his family didn't want anything to do with him anymore.

I wonder why their decision didn't arise when doing so would have meant they would sit at the back of bus? And when will the rest of us get the "choice" to go with whatever's popular at the moment?

Maybe it's due to the growing mixed or Caublasian sentiment amongst multiracial people. But I'm becoming less concerned about whether or not those foks proudly embrace and bear the standards of Blackness. I'm not shunning them. But I'm not especially solicitous of their racial fidelity, either.

Danzy Senna would seem to belong to the ranks of people who go way back in the black struggle, who at one time were known as "voluntary negroes". The most prominent among these was Walter White, who for years was the director of the NAACP. He looked white and could've passed, but he chose to be a negro and held his position for many years because it was a great asset when it came to raising funds for the organization. Rich white philanthropists felt more comfortable contributiong money to the NAACP when he was the solicitor.

While it seemed like everyone embraced black power, many did not! The 60s and 70s were confusing decades, and to embrace blackness was "radical." And to associate with them was to bring about trouble, and police surveillance.

black people were always fighting "to rise in rank for power positions."

Renata: Actually, the quote above doesn't do her justice. As a student, I was always taught that you must present the information correctly and have not done so...

The essay is actually about how being "biracial" is the new fad. She is critical of those people, who claim this identity or choose one or the other at their convenience.

She writes:

In Boston circa 1975, mixed wasn't really an option. The words "A fight, a fight, a nigga and a white!" could be heard echoing from schoolyards during recess. You were either white or black. No checking "Other." No halvsies. No in-between.

During the 60s within the youthful ranks of the protest movement, were always those who we called "militant", these were the ones who talked a good "revolution". And, indeed, being mixed wasn't an option as very often those with the lightest complexions were the most militant, like they had something to prove. Then there were the multi-colored moderates who were more interested in projecting an Afro-centric image by wearing dashikis and big Afros and medallions and large earrings while inter-acting with well-meaning whites eager to lend their support to The Cause. We were all part of a counter culture who thrived on shaking up the status quo and, in retrospect, our most notable accomplishment was making F.B.I. chief, J. Edgar Hoover, veeeery nervous.

well cynique, much of this conversation has as much to do with our own generational, regional, and class differences. Some of you were there, and I was not, but know quite a bit about the movement. Some of us lived in the South, and only know about Jim Crow and the signs, while those of us in the North and West may not know the Signs, but we know racism, exclusion from unions, etc...and we know police brutality, this we share with black people throughout the world, that is, police brutality!

well stated i agree with her...it is aslap in the face to whie supremacy for mixed race people to claim black and ive always believed that...so she basically echoed my sentiments..

You silly plantation Negroes are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Stupid!! Are you serious Misty??? It's a slap in the face for mixed kids to claim BLACK!!! Thats one of the funniest things I've ever heard in my life!!

If anything thats exactly what the white power structure WANTS!!! They want Black ppl to be so physically, and mentally "mixed up" so that we can't identify ourselves. Which makes us easier to "breed out". Also, they want to take away our "humanity" by not letting us have our own identity. Not only that when we accept the "one drop rule" the white man strategy is working.

We must be the biggest joke in the world to white ppl. Boy!! They must have realized long time ago that we were not a "threat" because all the "Black" ppl who were doing the "threatening" looked just like them. HOW FUNNY!!!!

Denzy Senzy or whatever the that Bytch name is is a JOKE!!! But stupid ass, self-loathing Negroes will gladly accept her into your ranks RIGHT?? Because it was stupid ass, self loathing Negroes like yourselves who gave her and her asshole parents the idea that they or anyone can claim "Black" in the first place. But you sit around "spit on" and kill off anybody you deem "too Black" looking or acting. JUST LIKE YOUR SLAVE MASTER.

This bytch is smart though. I'll give her that. The plan is: Take a group of underrepresented, or disenfranchized ppl with "poor" self images, and low self-esteem and erect yourself to be their "queen". Then once you are on "top" start accepting more and more ppl who look and think just like you.

And Lil_ze you only want women like her around because you need someone "to worship".

i wonder about the science side of skin color...i wonder if one's complexion tells us the amount of 'white' blood they have. While this is may seem obvious, there has been test done, where many people who identified as black and are undisputedly black by most African Americans standards had more 'european' blood. anyways, just some thoughts!

right abm. i'm not either, that is solicitious of their identity. it is there business. what interests me, more or less, was the idea of seeing blackness as a privilege, which i think many indisputedly black do not embrace the idea of being black as a privilege, but a burden, something they would drop if given the chance. and how this issue is different for those folk who are ambiguously black, especially those who grew up in a particular tradition of black struggle, protest, and resistance.

It speaks to seeing the U.S. black community as it was not as it is now. It was this community of various hues of people who called themselves black, and this community was tied together by blood, institutions--cultural, social, religion, and political, as we treatment by white people.

This present black community is quite different, it has fewer progressive institutional ties; and class differences contributed to this, but the media. while there was always colorism within the black community, it operates now at a much larger level. I mean its international the way these rappers have these every color, nationality, and ethnicity of people except for dark skinned sistas in their videos...our most successful actresses too are light as hell, as they were in the past, but they they are really successful...anyways, just some more thoughts...probably too much coffee!

the most interesting thing on this thread is that you have a person (serenasailor) who has said that he is very light, actually acting like he has a right to say who is black and who is not black?

if a blackman has a child, then his off-spring are black.

nobody cares what a handful of color-struck lunatics think.

you cannot eliminate light skin black people.

they are black. better get used to it.

Well...I am in two minds about this whole thing.

I say I am black because I look more black and I am judged as such. I have never had a problem with calling myself black and don't see it a a 'privellege' or a 'choice' or anything like that. It is just what I am.

BUT, rather ironically, I can see where serenasailor is coing from. There are a significant number of black people who have an agenda when calling someone like Mariah Carey (whose father is mixed himself) a 'black woman'. It is about worshipping and longing to be and look like white people. I am not saying this is the agenda for all black people, but there are quite a few.

It is also kind of offensive to call Mariah black as she was raised by her mother also and it is almost dismissing and acknowledging her mother's heritage as unimportant. Isn't that the kind of her behaviour that is more KKK than 'black empowerment'...?

Oddly enough, it is white people who often question me about my looks and ask where my parents are from. I have had black people who get quite agressive and angry when they hear this - I am not sure why.

I agree. And moreover, many whiter-looking 'Black' foks KNOW of what you describe and TRADE on it to their advantage, with both Black AND White foks.

^^^^ So true ABM. I have witnessed this behaviour and it makes me sadder. Someone isn't more beautiful or inherently better because they look whiter or more mixed.

I have even known family members who 'parade it around' with this stuff.

First of all Lil_Cunt I never said that I was light-skinned. I said that my father is a very light-skinned man and my mother is a very dark-skinned woman. I am a very brown-complexted man. I very PROUD brown complexted man.

Secondly, you keep making the stupid statement that we want all light-skinned ppl eliminated. This from a guy who says that Cameron Diaz is a "Black" woman. I'm saying that mixed ppl should be able to honor their heritage and claim "mixed".

So stop twisting my DAMN words idiot.

Latina_WI: Misty, you seriously think there are no black people in the world who worship and push for mixies to 'enter their ranks' because it makes them looks whiter, therefore more 'acceptable' as a race?

Look at the media, isn't that telling you something about the way a lot of black people wish to be perceived (or the way others wish blacks to be perceived)?

And get on your side for what? How many will REALLY be on your side if they aren't 'authentic'? And do you think that if mixed people in america were allowed to be mixed, or to a further extent accepted as white - then we would have a HECK of a lot more saying that they were mixed or white mixies?

From what I have seen of quite a few black people I DO believe it is about the worshipping of white and mix people. Look at what black people went through, it is understandable (in a twisted, cotton picker way).

but what does all of this have to do w/Danzy Senna's quote? Just joking! It is always funny how these things rarely maintain the integrity of the theme/purpose of the thread.

so serenasailor, what is exactly are the qualifications for being "black"?

Is your father black? Does he not have white blood? Does his features make him black? His color? Or is it blood? Is he a mulattoe? A quadroon? Does he have kinky or curly hair?

And, lord, what would we do if we didn't have 20-something "latina_wi" to explain the color situation as it exists in the world in general, and in America specifically, from her perch over there in Wales. Maybe she's getting some input from her "mum" who hates her because she's not light-skinned like her sister. watta crock. And Serenasailor is just mad because he took after his mother instead of his father. Hang in there, Misty!

Also cynique, the only reason I have strong opinions about this is I see how differently black people treat me and my lighter skinned sisters in comparison to one of my sisters who is dark skinned. And I see how people use it to their advantage (which I do not).

Maybe your happy with that - but there is no such thing as true equality until it is achieved for all. Isn't rocket science dear.

I was far more upset that 'Apocalypto' wasn't nominated for best picture. A film about one of the most uptight women in the world doesn't exactly appeal to me.

And I don't speak welsh - it requires too much saliva.

latina wi, you said you see how differently white people treat you and your light skinned sisters, in comparison to your dark skin sister.

why is it an issue for you how you are treated and/or percieved by white people?

why the hell do you care what white people are thinking or doing?

latina wi, why would you think that "black people" have some desire for "mixies" (as you call them), to 'enter their ranks' in order for them (blacks) to be more acceptable to whites?

newsflash- these so-called mixed people are ALREADY in our ranks, because in america you are black if you have one black parent.

also latina wi, what do you mean when you say you have seen people use it (light skin) their advantage?

how can someone being light skin, use this to their advantage?
id love to hear this explained.

latina wi, you also said "if mixed people in america were allowed to be mixed or to a further extent be accepted as white......."

latina wi, you seem to have this idea in your head that a black person who has one white parent is somehow closer to being "accepted as white".

and thats so untrue.

there are plenty of people who are "mixed", how this makes them somehow close to being accepted as white or gives them so kind of "advantage" (as you say you have seen) is beyond me.

white people don't say, "oh yeah, you know that mixed-close to white guy or girl", they say "that BLACK guy or girl, even if that person is "mixed" or a "mixie" (as you call them latina wi).

latina wi, you seem to be very concerned with how white people behave and or treat black people (whether or not these black people have one white parent or not).

black people do not have some desire to have "mixed" people enter into their ranks, because #1-they ALREADY are in our ranks.

no one is "not allowing" mixed people to be mixed, but the history of america dictates that if you have one drop of black blood you are black.

get used to this reality.

Lil_ze: are you honestly saying that you don't think that mixed raced people are viewed as more 'european' therefore more acceptable?

Of course I am going to care about how I am perceived by people. I am at an age where, though I mostly don't give a shit about what people think of me, I still care to a certain extent. As I live in a MAJORITY white country my life is often reflected this way.

In the UK, someone is not automatically black just because they have one black parent. This has become especially true in recent times. I have heard white people who REFUSE to accept that a mixed raced person is 'black' even though the mixed person may insist they are.

And it isn't only white people who feel this way. However, you cannot ignore that a lot of our lives are dictated by the way white people work because they are the people who hold the most power. Sad reality.

The same way a lot of Asian are perceived as different to white and black people is the same way a lot of mixed people are view as different to other people. What about the rising number of mixed people in the USA who want to be viewed as such? The ones who are campaiging to be recognised as mixed race in the american census. Going to ignore their feelings too?

Lil_ze: you have a raas cheek to tell me I care too much about what white people think considering you still adhere to rules that were made by white colonialists. LOL, and how hypocritical of you to say this: "...white people don't say, "oh yeah, you know that mixed-close to white guy or girl", they say "that BLACK guy or girl,.."
as it just proves that YOU are the one who listens and obeys what white people tell you.

uh latina wi, i live in a majority white country also (the united states).

as far as the number of "mixed" people who "want to viewed as such".

people want MANY things, the reality of life is that we can't always have what we want.

you state "i have heard white people refuse to accept a mixed person as black, even though the black person insists they are".

again, why the HELL are you so caught up in how white people percieve other people?

as i said i live in a MAJORITY white country also, but i really don't give a second thought to who some white person thinks is black or not black.

you clearly do.

as far as "mixed" people being seen as "black", has ZERO to do with obeying what white people tell me.

the FACT is that throughout the history of black people in america, many of our women were raped by white men.

these children of white men and black women were born into slavery also.

so if these children had one white parent was not an issue, they endured the same situation that a person with two black parents had to endure.

so today, the fact that a person is seen as "black" (even if they have one white parent) has everything to do with the history of america, and the "black" experience.

what white people do or say does not shape this reality.

latina wi, if you in your mind have this idea that "mixed" people are somehow closer to european, and therefore "more acceptable (as you say),

SEND ANY MIXED RACE PERSON (WITH ONE BLACK AND ONE WHITE PARENT) TO A KKK RALLY OR A NEO-NAZI RALLY OR A 'CHRISTIAN IDENTITY' MEETING, YOU WILL SEE JUST HOW CLOSE TO WHITE THESE EUROPEANS THINK YOU (THE MIXED RACE PERSON IS).

the reason that so-called "mixed race" people in america and other places on earth identify as "black" is because they have experienced the same hatred and dicrimination as any person with two black parents.

again, this is the reality.

just because a few "mixed" people don't like the fact that they are viewed as "black" by the world at large, and are somehow trying to get away from this, this does not change the fact that this is how they are viewed.

a new "racial category" will not change this.

and a new "racial category" will never take place in the united states.

its kind of pathetic that some of our people are so "worried" about what white people think or feel.

i live in a majority white country, as do you latina wi.

Take for instance South Africa!! I'm going to use South Africa as an example because South Africa was "supposedly" the most racist country in the world.

South Africans didn't adhere to a "One drop rule". If you were "Black you were "Black" and if you were "mixed" you were "mixed".

The mixed South Africans were called "Coloured". These were a mixed race ppl. They were allowed to establish their own communities, schools etc. Away from the "Black" population. They even had their own language. They spoke Afrikaans, and English while the rest of the Black population spoke "Zulu".

Even in the most racist country in the world mixed race ppl were allowed to honor their heritage. These ppl were not viewed as "Black" and they were not viewed as "White" they were viewed as "mixed" and they were treated as such.

I know many of White ppl who will insist that Halle Berry, and Nicole Ritchie are not Black women but will insist that they are "mixed", because they don't look like traditional "Black" women.

I'm simply saying stop forcing these ppl to be apart of a group that they are "Not".

what the hell does what happened in south africa have to do with black people in america?

we don't live in south africa, so what happened there really has no effect (nor should it) on what the social state of affairs in america.

no one is "forcing" anyone to be a part of a group "they are not".

we are in america, mixed people are seen as "black" in this country.

like it or not, accept it or not, believe it or not, this is how it is.

if any people are so interested in the manifestation of a "mixed race" category-

GO TO SOUTH AFRICA!

then you can have a "mixed race" category, and be happy.

but what goes on in south africa, plays ZERO part in the goings on in america.

and AGAIN we have another person, who is talking about what white people view as "black" or not.

if you saw halle berry after she won her oscar award, can you really have any doubt that she sees her self as a BLACKWOMAN?

this "mixed race category" that some think should be used in america is a FANTASY!!!!!!

it will NEVER happen in the united states.

Or that I registered on myspace ages ago with a whole heap of friends?

Okay cynique - like I said your prerogative. I didn't know a black girl living in wales was such an 'extraoridnary' thing.

latina wi, what about the "mixed" people who want to viewed as such?

it's their right to WANT to be viewed as such, but that does NOT mean its going to happen.

there was a time in america, where blacks WANTED to be viewed as more 3/5ths of a man.

but it DID NOT happen.

these "mixed" (black) people can want, want, want all they want.

but just because SOME mixed people want to be viewed as such, does not mean they will be.

what about the son or daughter of a blackman and a white woman, who wants to be viewed as BLACK?

is this not there right?

and i don't give a dam how a red race of beasts known to the world as the white race, views black people.

Dude, yes you do or you wouldn't have mad ethat quote about the KK rallies.

My point is; race is a hard thing to try and classify and I think people should have the right to be and what they want without having be dictated to.

In an ideal world this would happen. Alas, the world ain't ideal.

It ain't up to black or white people to classify anyone or put anyone in a box.

That generic myspace page with the vague profile is as ficticious as you are, "latina-wi". And I can't believe you couldn't scan a picture of yourself onto your site. Whatever. Babble on.

What's the purpose of having a MySpace site if you don't post a picture and a profile? If you're that coy, then you should stick to just having a blog.

cynique...as i stated on the other post that Chrishayden started about myspace, i joined because of my 15th yrs h.s. reunion had a page, and it was a way for me to get in touch with those of us who did not attend, like myself, and to remain in touch. thus, the majority of people on my space, get it, i actually know or know through something, such as aalbc, ....all the other folk are musicians, authors, etc...whose work i respect.

While people are there to date, i'm not, so seeing what i look like is unnecessary, and giving my personal business beyond my basic education, again, is unnecessary...

yes, i guess. i think she's 'authentic,' though authenticity is not something i could put too much trust in since we are ALL anonymous, more or less...even having a picture up on myspace, for example, doesn't tell one much about the self....

I only used to add people on my myspace who know me already. I stopped using it so heavily because I was getting pestered by a lot of music artitst I don't know.

If people know my face - why would they need my pictures....? Uh, that simple REALLY.

Cynique you sound burnt love. Cheer up, it might never happen dear.

Tell me, "latina-_wi", how does "burnt" sound, you ding-a-ling???
And yes, Yukio, cyberspace allows us all to be anonymous which is why it's always a mystery to me, why some posters pose as something they are not. Why can't they just adopt a screen name and be themselves. But I guess some folks are just naturally devious.

Burnt sounds like a lot of things - and in this case you sound that way. No big deal, we've all be burnt sometime.

To be honest, I don't care a great deal about what I write on the net simply for the reason that it is anonmynous (sp) so no real repurcussions are felt and it doesn't really affect me.

However, I am still kinda offended that you would think I'd sit my brown arse down, think of a fake persona, make up a FAKE myspace (especially as that myspace took me a bit of time - generic, oh please!) and fake everything I say here.

What mad mammy would do that?

I have a life :-) Albeit a boring one but I don't wish to spice it up with bullshit on the internet. This whole forum could be fake but I take things how I see it.

The reason I think that you are a fake half-white half-black person with a hispanic grandfather who used to live in England but who now lives in Wales is because you comes across as a genuine everyday black female who lives in America. It's like you have strayed from the fake persona you created for yourself and have lapsed into what you really are.

cynique...are you calling devious? LOL!

i don't think she's fake. in fact, i know quite a few folk like her who have these Afro-Latin-trans-atlantic identities...

this is because travel:

caribbeans in since they're colonizers lived in europe, and that was the best place to obtain an education or a better life in general[economically speaking], they moved to these different places. so folk from the british caribbean, for example, are in england, canada, and the u.s. [this is true of indians too, by the way].

and some folk have lived in all places, and/or visited these places, and with this hip hop and african american culture[since we are the most hated but also most internationally successful of black people] is global, and has been so before the internet...before bob marley became bob marley he tried to sing like sam cook!

thus what you tend to have among some black folk is a cosmopolantism that is the product of migration and the hegemony of african american culture; these people, however, are still primary of their 'mother country,' and so if we were to meet latina-wi, i am sure she would be unmistably british; and even in her exchange w/abm, in fact, i can tell she is more 'authentic' than you think.

Well, this argument is an exercise in futility, Yukio. Your pat hypothetical postulation about "Latina_Wi" presents a explanation than she herself couldn't come up with. And it typically sounds like something that would come out of your mouth. "Big Ups" to you, "Dude". And once again, I am not questioning what latina-wi says, I remain skeptical that what she says would come out of the mouth of who she says she is. To me, she is a character. So be it. I have already advised her to "babble" on. And she has given every indication of doing so. And I'm sure she is grateful to have found a friend and a defender in you. Case closed.

well, cynique...i'm probably better to describe her TYPE than she is, at least at the categorical level. I have only laying out a particular type that I immediately recognize...she is much more than this, of course. But you suspicious too comes off from a categorization of some abtract "black woman" from the states. Neither you or I can get at the alpha and omega of this young lady. But...if you say case closed, then I will follow your lead, elder.
