Ummmm...found this on another message board. What do you guys think?

Because, from the little I have seen, I think it is kind of dumb and unwisely reinforces a stereotype (though this may have been subconciously done by the site's authors).

You're really all over the place, "Latina-wi". You claim you reside in England and are presumably hispanic but are exceptionally empathetic with and informed about black Americans and extremely familiar with the hip-hop/pop culture scene in this country. Is "you guys" a typical expression in the British vernacular.

^^^LMAAAAO. Cynique, are you suggesting that the UK is in, no way, been infilitrated with american culture; such as music and even language? Because if you believe that you need to step out of Chicago! Did you know that US hip-hop is one of the most popular forms of music IN THE WORLD?

NOWHERE on the board have I said I am full blown hispanic so your little theory that I am has been blown apart. You assume that due to my screenname, it is only my grandfather who is the hispanic one. I became interested in african-americans because when I used to post on a Latino board african-americans infilitrated it and whatnot. Therefore, my eyes became opened to the african-american experience. It is odd that you are suspcious of those who take an interest in other people's cultures, must be an american thing.

And I don't live in England, though I was born and raised that for the first eighteen years of my life.

As for ny use if 'you guys' - please remember that the language you speak is ENGLISH, it wasn't created by the americans though many americans words have invaded the english language and affected it globally. When I went Turkey I was surprised on how much they also used the term 'you guys'. You'd probably be too.

Yea, yea, yea. You're over-explaining yourself with all of that subtefuge. One word would explain you. The only theory I have about you is that you're a "chameleon" who becomes whatever it strikes you fancy to be. Yawn.

Okay, whatever - you must be quite a self important person if you think I CARE about some person on a message board and their psychoanalysis of what I may or may not be. Guess what? I don't!

If you weren't looking for your theory, don't enter a thread suggesting one, okay?

ANYWAYS - Next, I haven't got time for girly feuds>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If you hadn't cared, "latina-wi", you wouldn't have gone into that long desperate explanation. And I didn't enter a thread suggesting a theory. "Theory" is your word. Or do I have to be be a self-important person to spot a phony. But carry on. You're harmless.

I think it is kind of dumb and unwisely reinforces a stereotype (though this may have been subconciously done by the site's authors).

Why would you troll another forum for derogatory subjects to post here? If you find this website offensive, then why perpetuate and "reinforce a stereotype" by posting links to it on a site that is frequented by Black people??? Why publicize it and increase its traffic??? And if you don't care about what we think, then why ask???

Judging from your thread, I've concluded that white people are definitely smarter than you LW. You need to go eat some brain food. And that's putting it mildly.

Publicizing is a good thing, IMO. Actin like African Americans aren't the butt of white folks' jokes avoids what is there, and in some ways, speaks to fear more than any thing of else of the fact of racism.

It also speaks to how some us of see ourselves. Many of us have internalized these negative images and work hard as hell to distance themselves from it because, intimately, they hold similar opinions.

This then demands that black speak against such images, partly, because they have allowed others to define their blackness.

Latina_WI: So it is best to ignore the fact that many people harbour prejudices within their own race and sweep it under the carpet? Why not see what other black people think about it since it is a subject that involves BLACK people? Or are you totally missing the point?

And if you read my posts properly you would realise, I do not care about what people on here think of me on a personal level as you do not know me. Therefore, I choose to ignore silly insults and arguments that people fill the board with. The reason I am here is simply debate, not to get into any drama as coming here looking for drama and creating runctions is kind of pathetic.

LW - Your comments are contradictory. Why post something that you think is dumb? As far as enlightening us, I doubt if anyone here gained anything by what you posted above since most of us have been Black for a really long time and we know all about other Black people. Now, if you could read and comprehend then you would "realise" that I was not insulting you personally and therefore you should not take personal offense, I am judging you based solely upon your posts. And if you are going to choose to "ignore" people, then don't respond to them. It's not rocket science.

Mzuri: Walkin around w/black skin aint knowing "all about other Black people." If it is true that many of our youths are high school drops outs, then clearly their don't know about what it means to be black...being black is so questionable that we have Obama's blackness being questioned.

Y - If our youth are the primary group comprising high school dropouts, and the reason is due to our being Black, then I would think we know all about the Black experience first hand. Further, I'm a high school dropout and that doesn't make me illiterate or unable to assess the current situation. Nor has it hindered me from being successful. I have been Black all my life and that's going on fifty years now and so there's not much anyone here can tell me about being Black, looking Black, being treated as a Black (second-class citizen) by white people, how Black people interact, what we think of each other, how we support each other, how we raise our children or anything else. I deal with Black people every single day of the week and not just the ones here on this forum.

Did you gain enlightenment from the link that was posted above???

M- no, those kids know about their individual experience, not the Black experience. that they are drop outs does not tell us WHY they are drop outs. It only tells us the result. If they knew the black experience they would take themselves back to school and get it crackin, or get some kind of training, or something vocational, but they need to get a skill. This is what our ancestors did; with very little, ex-slaves encouraged that first generation of free blacks to go to school...this is what I am talkin about!

Thus, my point is that there is MORE to the black experience than day-to-day encounters w/racism.

You have even made the point, though not explicitly, that generational differences too tell us something about being black.

Now, your idea of being a 'black' person is particular to your experiences, including what you have read, where you have travelled, etc... Someone else, living in another city, generation, class, gender, etc...will have a very different notion, perhaps. Beyond claiming the veracity of racism and perhaps culture--cuisine, music, beliefs [if that] knowing the black experience requires one to have a sense of black history...without that history, the black experience is just being exploited by white people or just your own individual experience that one will often assume is the same as that black person walkin across the street from you.

No. I wasn't enlightened by the post, but I did think is was interesting in how it compared gangs w/black fraternities..., and some of the other pictures. Once you get over the sterotypes, it can be quite engaging!

Well you're one of the most intelligent people posting on this board, Mzuri, and the kind of person I have encoutered over the years; high-school drop-outs who are as smart as, if not smarter than college graduates, - people who found school boring and couldn't conform to a class room environment. One such individual is my middle son, who is a voracious reader and who can hold his own on any subject. I am a college drop-out but I was always the "go-to" person during my 30-year postal "career. But nowadays you do need that "piece of paper" to get your foot in the door.

well, speaking of the black experience, in Harlem, and I suspect most places, most black folk in the day did not have a high education....But, they encourages those who didn't to get one forthwith, AND, more importantly, they read everything they could get their hands on....newspapers, books about African civilization, etc...peddled on the streets, the Communist Manifesto, the wall street journal, the NY Times, every damn thing!

So don't get it twisted; I'm talkin about knowledge and it is not only gained through walkin in black skin. This is the point!

Cynique - Thank you for your kind words. You are so insightful it's uncanny. That's one of the reasons that I dropped out of school - it simply wasn't stimulating. I'll tell you all about it someday.

Y - Of course there's more to the "Black experience" than racism - I addressed some of those in my post. And obviously the Black experience is comprised of an endless array of individual experiences since ALL people, regardless of condition, have different realities, interactions, emotions, etc. As to my own life, I have no woe is me sob story. I have been blessed with a very rich life and I still have my whole life ahead of me.

M-the last post was a response to cynique's not yours, so I was not at all trying to sentimentalize you comments. with that said, i responded to your claim that being 'black' is sufficient to know the black experience [to latina_wi]. That you "addressed" that there is more to the black experience than racism disproves your own point.

Y - I never said, implied or tried to prove that being Black was sufficient to know about the Black experience. There's probably some white professorial types that know more about it than we do. And then there's all the oreos that think they're white that don't know anything about it at all.

At any rate, in regards to 'white professionals and oreos,' not to be disagreeable, or even seem contradictory, but knowing about a people's experience and living this experience is quite different. I just hope that our youth seem to learn about themselves too!

Well then, what about Justine Timberfake?

Surely he's pilfered enuff stylings and music from Black foks (plus he turned Janet Jackson into a cheap video ho before the world) to get the garner Honorary Kneegrowhood.

Latina_WI: Again, your not comprehending what I am saying. I ignore any comments that I find insulting or kind of personal that at directed at me. Since you do not know me to make statements about my intelligence (especially, since you missed the whole point as to why I posted the website in the FIRST PLACE) then I ignore any comments you make that pass judgement on how thick I may or may not be.

The reason I posted the website is because I wanted other opinions on how people feel about it. That is also not difficult to understand as many people have commented on things that they find 'absurd' or have brought things they find 'stupid' to the attention on this board. Just because you got nothing out of what I posted doesn't mean the same for others.

As for your comments about being 'black for a long time'. I have been black for twenty years, that is why I feel I can comment on the black experience. As a black person, I felt the website was relevant and thought others might take an interest.

Little Darlin' - You are free to perpetuate all the negativity that you choose, but you asked for opinions and that's what you got. You posted a topic (a website entitled "WHITE PEOPLE ARE SMARTER THAN BLACKS") that was being discussed on another forum because the opinions that you found there weren't enough for you and/or you thought we'd find it interesting here, and again that's your prerogative. Maybe some of the other members here have time to delve into that site, I'm not interested (BECAUSE I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WHITE PEOPLE ARE SMARTER THAN BLACKS) and it's not a topic that warrants several days of discussions so let's keep it movin.

LOL...if you read the site you would realise that it is MEANT to be a spoof. It isn't meant to be taken seriously, white crackheads are gunned on it and it refers to 'niggas' not 'blacks'.

I thought people on this site might have an opinion on it because of this.

Thanks for pointing out that the website is a spoof because I would have never gathered that unless you told me. I suppose if someone made a spoof website about someone's momma being a ho (or any other topic that one would think offensive), you would probably find that amusing because it's only just a spoof. It's not really real negativity and so it's not really harmful.

"Latina-wi" continues to come out of so many different bags. Now all of a suddenly she's black. I'm still curious as to where this person currently resides. England??? There is a whole UK pop culture centered around their music and fads and celebs and slang and yet, she seems so totally immersed in the American scene.

Cynique: I have always identified as black because I am perceived as such. I do have an interest in my 'other' cultures, but like a lot of people I still claim blackness. I never said I was anything else. Moreover, a person can be more than 'one' thing culturally and ethnically.

LOL, and the UK is good for rock/indie and alternative music but the rest - blah. Which is why american music is so popular here. The same way you are getting a lot of our music (James Blunt, Corrine Bailet Rae et cetera).

I grew up in England but I moved to another area of the UK now (wales).

If you don't think i am genuine, that is your prerogative.

But this is true of cynique, of course. YOU should know, she likes to harass people.
