Accidental Drug Mix Said to Kill Levert

CLEVELAND -- R&B singer Gerald Levert's death last fall was an accident caused by a fatal combination of prescription narcotics and over-the-counter drugs, a coroner said.
The drugs in his bloodstream included the narcotic pain relievers Vicodin, Percocet and Darvocet, along with anxiety medication Xanax and two over-the-counter antihistamines, Geauga County Coroner Kevin Chartrand said. The official cause of death was acute intoxication, and the death was ruled accidental.
Chartrand said his office received a report Thursday from the Cuyahoga County coroner's office, which conducted the autopsy.
Levert, 40, son of O'Jays singer Eddie Levert, died Nov. 10 in his suburban Cleveland home. He was a member of the R&B trio LeVert, whose hits included "(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind" and "Casanova." He sold millions of albums and had numerous hits over his career.
His soulful voice powered his appeal and in 1991 he made his solo debut with the album "Private Line." That included a hit duet with his dad, "Baby Hold on to Me."
Andy Gibson, a family spokesman, said Levert was taking the pain medication because of chronic pain from a lingering shoulder problem and surgery in 2005 to repair a severed Achilles tendon. The autopsy revealed that Levert had pneumonia.
Levert also took Xanax for anxiety attacks, Gibson said.

These doctors and Pharmacists have to start taking the blame. I used to be a pharmacy tech, unless patients are shopping their scripts around to different pharmacies, it's impossible to dispense too many drugs or a deadly combination of them because the computer won't let you. I guess Doctors are going to have to start making certain patient information available to all pharmacists. |

I'm sure this is happening to regular people all the time. This story and Anna Nichole Smith's story is probably bringing it all out in the open which is good. |

I think common sense would dictate that you don't take all the above mentioned medications in combination. I don't even mix aspirins and cold medicine, or if I've taken some Thera-Flu I wait until it's out of my system before I take Sine-Offs.
But then common sense isn't common, especially when it comes to medicine. For example, most people store their medicines in the "medicine cabinet" of their bathrooms, when the label clearly states to store these items in a cool, dry place - which is definitely not the environment of most bathrooms. But since people are brainwashed, and the thing is called the "medicine cabinet," they just assume that's the proper procedure.
The problem with medicine mixing is not the fault of the doctors and pharmacists, it is incumbent upon the individual to exercise his brain. It's part of being a responsible adult.

We can't overlook how thousands of people die each year in hospitals from being given wrong medications or from picking up infections or from surgical mishaps. |

(I bet when they hauled his dead stiff ass out, bunches of folks were saying, "Dig! I want some of what HE had."
The man was in some kind of pain, probably was taking this to perform, built up a tolerance and took too much.
Y'all dn't believe me, but this is one of the occupational hazards of showbiz.
That plus they got so much money they can get what they want and willing doctors who will write them a scrip for anything. |

Chris,
Levert's GIRTH probably created or contributed to assorted health problems that surely were NOT helped by all the hazards of performing and traveling (bad sleep/rest, bad food, performance anxiety, etc.). |

Addiction has been classified as an illness. And doctors and pharmacists are bond by part of their training to take certain precautions when prescribing or dispensing meds to the patients THEY KNOW are addicted to them. As a former pharmacy tech and former office manager of a clinic--trust me--EVERYBODY in both facilities KNOWS which patients are addicted to the meds they are given. |

Nice post. But initially, I believe the original cause of death was stated as a heart attack. Is this not true? It was stated in such a way as to suggest it was congenital heart failure. Now it was the toxic reaction of a number of potent drugs (which possibly could lead to cardiac failure).

hmmm maybe i should stop mixing drugs like that? i remember taking nyquil, thera-flu, excedrin backache, and some fizzy stuff... i was sick as a dog, but had to meet a deadline. and actually i was on autodoberman because considering that i don't drink or smoke anything, i was high as a kite. nyquil took all the good stuff out of it, because it doesn't make me fall asleep like it used to. |

Yes Dobey, you should NOT mix all of those different over-the-counter medications. Besides possibly causing coma and death, you could damage your kidneys or something. Seriously.
NT - The above post is regarding the official toxicology results. Mr. Levert's combined use of Vicodin, Percocet, Darvocet, Xanax and anti-histamines caused him to have heart problems and die.
Just say NO to prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals!!! Smoke reefer instead

if i ever get rich i will smoke a phatty lumpkin, at times i have wondered if it's as good as folks make it out to be, but alas i shall just say no until my cheddar is stacked high. |
