While in a Border bookstore last weekend, I observed TWENTY different types of bridal magazines. In fact, there were so many of them they were sectioned off along a wall that was SEPERATE from all the other magazines. (Chicks SURE like to fantasize about getting HITCHED!)

19 or the 20 magazines had White women on their covers.

The one non-White cover included lovely model Eve (of America Next Top Model fame). I think the magazine is titled Bride Noire and it appears to be geared toward BLACK brides.

I guess I mentioned this in part because I recall sometimes back there being a thread posted here that was geared towards lamenting the paucity of Black women on the covers of bridal magazines, with much of guist of the debate being that there are enuff Black women who marry that warrant presenting Black women as lovely brides.

But what stood out to me most about what I witnessed at the Borders is the demographic who appear to most faithfully patronize this particular Borders store is, you guessed it...BLACK FEMALES.

I think it's great that there's a bridal magazine geared towards Black women. I hope it will thrive and that it will contribute to people planning their weddings and perhaps even cause some of these future babymommas to consider getting married BEFORE starting a family.

It's a start. And we can get into the publishing business just as soon as we get into the hospitality industry.

Yeah, we'll parlay our hotel money and become magazine tycoons.

LiLi,

I think I was struck most by the notion of their being all these bridal magazines with White chicks on their covers littering the walls of a bookstore where a HIGH percentage of its clientele are Black women.

Moreover, I often wonder how Black women think about all MYRIAD magazines that feature young White women on the their covers. It's something I've started to be more aware of as I take my daughters to bookstores.

LiLi,

It's not so much I mind magazines that feature White women as much as I do the effect of there being so MANY of them. I mean, really, next time you're in bookstore span the magazine section. You'd think the only women on earth are either White...or Beyonce.

not at borders, i see black mens magazine, smooth, king, high times, and some other stuff black chicks on the covers of them. not to mention the calendar/magazines that have those girls with big ol' delicious round hineys on the cover. these books are located right next gq, maxim, stuff, style, and other mags like that. oddly enough essence, jet, and latina time are in the alternative life style are where you could probably find serenasailor.

Right, Dobes, and there's always "Sister to Sister" magazine as well as Essence and Ebony which has Raven Symone on the cover of its current issue. But, of course, the same critics of white magazines put these periodicals down, too.

There are tons of Black magazines available in the shops on military installations. I think that stores order magazines depending upon their local demographics.

When I hear things like this going on in the UK I think it is understandable as the UK black population is less than 2%. So I can see why black people in the UK are not that recognised in mainstream magazines, there aren't a huge number of us.

However, it is totally different in America. African-americans are a significant number and are a MAJOR part of american history. Therefore, they should be incoorporated into the mainstream.

I'm sorry Dobes I wasn't around to get your little insult. However, if you want to talk advertisments I think I saw your girlfriend on "FEED THE CHILDREN".
