On her hit show America's Next Top Model, Tyra Banks has always stressed the importance of body confidence – but it still hurt when tabloids ran an unflattering photo of her in a bathing suit under headlines that screamed, "America's Next Top Waddle" and "Tyra Porkchop." Now, for the first time in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Banks, 33, is publicly discussing her much-buzzed-about weight gain. "I get so much mail from young girls who say, 'I look up to you, you're not as skinny as everyone else, I think you're beautiful,' " she says. "So when they say that my body is 'ugly' and 'disgusting,' what does that make those girls feel like?" More on Tyra Talk About Tyra on Our Blog Photos: Tyra on Tyra, Then & Now As for how Banks feels about her own 5'10" body – which she says is at 161 lbs. these days, about 30 lbs. heavier than when she landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue in 1997 – she says: "I still feel hot, but every day is different. It's when I put on the jeans that used to fit a year ago and don't fit now and give me the muffin top, that's when I say, 'Damn!' " In other words, yes: She has put on weight, though not nearly as much as those recent tabloid stories suggested. (Banks believes the pix were snapped at an unflattering angle.) "She has a very womanly, gorgeous body that goes up and down," says her good friend Heidi Klum. In fact, Banks says that since she retired from modeling in 2005, the number on the scale has fluctuated from 148 lbs. to 162 lbs., depending on how well she is taking care of herself. "I feel more comfortable when I'm lighter – I sleep better, I snore less, I have more endurance when I work out, my arms look better," she admits. Still, she isn't freaking out about wearing size 32-waist jeans or about "the fat roll" she claims to have on her back. (Her biggest source of figure angst is her size-DD breasts, which she says make it hard to find clothes that fit: "I would love for them to be a size and a half smaller.") But, she adds, "I've made millions of dollars with the body I have, so where's the pain in that? If I was in pain, I would have dieted. The pain is not there – the pain is someone printing a picture of me and saying those (horrible) things." In fact, it appears that by adding a little padding, Banks the businesswoman has earned a bit of credibility: Her talk show is now entering its second season, and the most recent season of Top Model delivered its strongest ratings ever. "(TV execs) think it's better when I'm at 155 lbs. – at 145, they feel I'm not as relatable," she explains. Besides, Banks is having a lot more fun these days eating the pancakes off a friend's plate at IHOP than trying to fit into designer sample sizes. Of course, if someone would come up with a miracle cure for cellulite, she's not above admitting she'd be first in line. "I think every woman," she says, "would want to do something about their cellulite!" | ||

Tyra IS a litle overweight in that picture...i wouldnt say shes fat...but she's slightly overweight....there's a diffeence in being thick and being overweight...thick is when the weight is well proportioned.....she looks slightly overweight here. i doubt she would be being called fat i she was well proportined. all she needs is a few sit-ups though. if she lost just a slight amount off her tummy and toned her thighs she would be just right. | ||

The Tyra in striped one-piece is fat. She's not grossly obese or anything. But she IS fat, there. Tyra's spent half of her life selling a body image that +95% of all living women have NO chance of achieving. So I find the current criticism she's receiving to be a funny bit of divine retribution. She is like a colt whose detractors want to have put down like the injured Kentucky Derby winner who couldn't support his weight and had to be euthanized. Luckily she's a survivor and doesn't really have an obligation to justify her weight gain or to lose the extra pounds she's put on. The whole thing is much ado about nothing. | ||

Tyra Banks is damn near 40. For a woman approaching 40, I'd say she's holding up quite nicely. Hate the new hair color, though. It makes her look washed out. I think she'd look great as a redhead, not strawberry blonde, but a rich sassy auburn. | ||

That's approaching 40, trust me. She wakes up with stiffness and aches she didn't feel 10 years ago. She's on the other side of 30 and has entered a new biological and physiological phase in her life, which most likely have contributed to her weight gain. | ||

Physically, Tyra looks great (I don't care for the hair color either), and when you consider the fact that she's a naturally big-boned woman, it's a direct reflection on our white-dominated society that she'd be considered fat. They also recently tried to pull that crap on Serena Williams, and she answered their criticism on the tennis court, and also off the court. Off the court she stated, and I quote: "I've always had HUGE KNOCKERS and a BIG ASS, and I always will, so get over it." On the court she crushed the #1 player in the world, Maria Sharapova (thin but very pretty for a Russian) in straight sets, 6-2 & 6-1. Serena's big titties & fat ass didn't stop her from kickin' ass, and in the process, she shut the mouths of the white FAT POLICE. | ||

China_b, The BIG difference between Tyra and Serena is that Tyra has made her fortune primarily via how she looks while Serena has made hers via what she DOES. Hell. If Serena weighed 250 lbs, she'd STILL be able to play pro tennis if she could still kick tail at it. But let's face it: For MOST who've observed her over the last 15 years, the 160+ lb Tyra is NOT the same as the 120 lb Tyra. We've got to get used to the heftier Tyra. And she's got to get use to our getting used to her having a spare tire. | ||

tyra banks looks HORRIBLE. she has totally lost any attractive qualities she may have once had. she had a NOSE JOB, to attempt to make herself look better. now, she has gain much weight, looks sloppy, and just doesn't look good. there are some females (jennifer hudson, lisa nicole carson) that have some "meat on their bones", and it fits them, because this is how their bodies are. then there are females who actually are born with a "slim frame", and then gain weight. these slim females who gain weight (or get FAT), just look nasty. tyra banks simply does not look good (despite her NOSE JOB (S). id still do her, but something about the way tyra banks now looks, REALLY TURNS ME OFF. she should be a bit ashamed. and by the way-if serena williams were 250 pounds, she would NOT be able to still play pro tennis. if serena was 250 pounds, she simply could not move around the court in the way she now does. there is a difference between having "big titties and a fat ass", and being 250 pounds. the strongest, biggest, tallest female tennis pro's are no way NEAR 250 pounds. | ||

you are welcome serenasailor. when you see tyra banks early modeling photos you can CLEARLY see she had a different shaped nose. it was actually WENDY WILLIAMS (a radio personality here in NYC) who brought it to my attention (not personally) but she mentioned it over the radio. then i saw the tyra banks show and i looked at her, and i said to myself, WOW, i never noticed her nose job. but after you do notice it, its just very obvious. its strange to me that someone who could get to the TOP of the international modeling "world" with her natural looks, would decide to get a nose job. its just strange. maybe that why she turns me off (although id still do her). amazing serenasailor and i actually agreeing on an issue? what is this board coming to? | ||
