Study Says Skin Tone Affects Earnings
Study says light-skinned immigrants in the U.S. earn more than darker-skinned ones
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 26, 2007
By TRAVIS LOLLER Associated Press Writer

Joni Hersch, a law and economics professor at Vanderbilt University, looked at a government survey of 2,084 legal immigrants to the United States from around the world and found that those with the lightest skin earned an average of 8 percent to 15 percent more than similar immigrants with much darker skin. AP Photo

(AP) Light-skinned immigrants in the United States make more money on average than those with darker complexions, and the chief reason appears to be discrimination, a researcher says.

Joni Hersch, a law and economics professor at Vanderbilt University, looked at a government survey of 2,084 legal immigrants to the United States from around the world and found that those with the lightest skin earned an average of 8 percent to 15 percent more than similar immigrants with much darker skin.

"On average, being one shade lighter has about the same effect as having an additional year of education," Hersch said.

The study also found that taller immigrants earn more than shorter ones, with an extra inch of height associated with a 1 percent increase in income.

Other researchers said the findings are consistent with other studies on color and point to a skin-tone prejudice that goes beyond race.

Hersh took into consideration other factors that could affect wages, such as English-language proficiency, education, occupation, race or country of origin, and found that skin tone still seemed to make a difference in earnings.

That means that if two similar immigrants from Bangladesh, for example, came to the United States at the same time, with the same occupation and ability to speak English, the lighter-skinned immigrant would make more money on average.

"I thought that once we controlled for race and nationality, I expected the difference to go away, but even with people from the same country, the same race _ skin color really matters," she said, "and height."

Although many cultures show a bias toward lighter skin, Hersch said her analysis shows that the skin-color advantage was not due to preferential treatment for light-skinned people in their country of origin. The bias, she said, occurs in the U.S.

Economics professor Shelley White-Means of the University of Tennessee at Memphis said the study adds to the growing body of evidence that there is a "preference for whiteness" in America that goes beyond race.

Hersch drew her data from a 2003 federal survey of nearly 8,600 new immigrants. The survey used an 11-point scale for measuring skin tone, in which 0 represents an absence of color and 10 the darkest possible skin tone.

From those nearly 8,600 participants, she focused on the more than 2,000 who were working and whose skin tone had been recorded during face-to-face interviews.

William Darity Jr., an economics professor at the University of North Carolina, said Hersch's findings are similar to a study he co-authored last year on skin tone and wages among blacks.

"We estimate that dark- or medium-skinned blacks suffered a discriminatory penalty of anywhere from 10 percent to 15 percent relative to whites," he said. "This suggests people cue into appearance and draw inferences about capabilities and skills based on how they look."

Darity said it is not clear whether the bias is conscious or subconscious.

Hersch said her findings, which will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science next month in San Francisco, could support discrimination lawsuits based not on race, but on color.

"There are very few color discrimination suits, but they are on the rise," she said. "But these suits can be hard to prove."

Tonya - This topic has been discussed ad nauseam a million times. There is no tribalism here, we're all just tired of this same dull, boring, monotonous topic. Don't you think there are any other issues pertaining to the Black community besides your momma is lighter than mine? And if not, you should have come up with a solution by now. Since you haven't, I've got a suggestion for you to combat this problem - Let's all just wear some rose colored glasses and then perhaps we'll all look pink.

And just so you know lil darlin, menopause can strike at any age.

Mzuri, we're tired of the mud slinging as well. No matter the situation, there is no good reason to react that way on this board. So if you are tired of what gets posted around here, ignore it or start your own thread/topic. That's how responsible adults behave AND THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO BEHAVE OTHERWISE.

I'm about to post something on Madame CJ. Walker. Maybe you'll like that.

Oh wait. You can name-call, whine, rant and call us "all" ignorant and old but I can't respond? I don't think so. We will respond with our comments in any thread we choose. And if you want to have some control over all of that, then start your own forum, make it a membership only deal that's password protected, and that way all the nappyheadedauntjemimalookingdarkies or whatever the hell you are can sit around and commiserate about why there's a rift between light-skinned, brown-skinned, dark-skinned, and blue-black Black people.

It's getting harder and harder to find a thread to comment on because EVERY THREAD is being hijacked by y'all with the same old mess! It's okay to have some entertainment now & then but you guys are turning this into Crenshaw Avenue. NO!--I don't think that was ever the intention for this forum! And so all I'm asking is for you guys to give it a little rest. PLEASE!! There's other things we'd like to talk about without being interrupted by yawl's senseless drama. Take a look at the last 50 threads, PLEASE, cuz I'm not exaggerating.

Thank you. Unfortunately, she'll still continue her relentless crusade to harangue against every black person who she suspects has lighter skin than hers. But having her own forum sounds like a good thing. Perhaps she should call it "Dark. Lovely and Authentic".

Tonya, to be perfectly honest - I don't really even give much of a care about your tired opinions and pissy rants - but I'm going to respond to your allegations that I start mess and hi-jack threads only because it seems as if you're addressing your little tirade directly towards me.

I have reviewed the last fifty or so threads and there haven't been any episodes of topics being hi-jacked. And if by hi-jacked you mean taking a subject and turning it into another completely unrelated subject then you're guilty of that yourdamnself:

http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/21706.html?1169764422

What is obvious about me is that I don't even post in every single thread. I commentary on subjects of interest and when I do I try to stay on point. I don't come into anyone's threads with the malicious intention of turning it into another subject. And regardless of what you think about it, I am going to continue to post as I see fit. As to the catfights between me and the wannabeforumqueen - the only reason that I challenge (or even pay any attention to) her at all is because she posts pure garbage on this forum that is untrue and/or she attacks people and I step in to defend the truth or to defend others.

As to your allegation that the same posters respond to posts that is probably because Troy has put the forum on lockdown, where he manually approves new members and so there probably won't be a whole lot of new blood here for awhile. You see - when he approves someone that doesn't mean that person is going to become an active poster. So until that changes it's going to be the same core participants here. It's his forum and he can run it however he sees fit. It's a lively forum and I think it's great here.

A couple of weeks ago after I discovered that Troy does NOT approve of all the cursing, etc. that had been going on (which I discovered while reading thru old threads and which I admit I was a part of and you know fully why) I took a chill pill. I'm not much into all of that anyway because I can get my points across in plain American English. I basically used that as a defense mechanism against people referring to me as subhuman derogatory insults and I fought fire with fire. I thought it was okay to do so since a moderator conducted themselves in that way. I was under the impression this was a free for all, but it's not and so I haven't and I won't. Unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

Your accusation about people starting mess is groundless and you can wear that shoe also. You post these types of divisive articles for the purpose of starting mess since you already know that most of the active posters don't care to discuss this topic. If they're anything like me it's probably because they don't define themselves as a "skintone."

I wouldn't even define myself as a Black person if society didn't put such a major emphasis on it. When I take bubblebaths, apply lotions, oils, cremes and perfumes, give myself manicures and pedicures, brush my hair, and all the other things I do to maintain and pamper myself, I'm not taking care of my BLACK body. And neither does anyone else. When I talk to my grandbabies I'm not talking to BLACK people. Maybe someday you'll comprehend what I just said.

The difference between the threads you start and the threads that others start is that you post topics that interest YOU, and others take into consideration whether the topics they post would be of interest to OTHERS.

And just one last thing - the years go by fast. So you can sit there with your ageist self and insult the old people - but in life you either get old or die. You should get on your knees and pray to Jehovah God that you live as long as some of us have, because a lot of people aren't making it these days and the odds are against you.

Now, I'm going to do you a really big favor - unless you post something that is overwhelmingly interesting, I won't post in your threads at all. So you can take your little poopie-pants-rants and drive the on. Ya heard.

......No need to respond.

Btw, there’s no moderator for Culture & Economy like there is for the Kool Room which means this isn't the "free for all" that you described… So, assuming I read your post right, regarding your interpretation of how one should conduct oneself on this board, that should settle things.

Chris, you do know that the Michelle Obama article was a printout of the news that was provided in the Positive Black Image link that you posted.

http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/21706.html?1169764422

Of course they have different celebrities on their website today, but on the day that you posted the link, Michelle Obama was one of the people being featured. It's silly but I want you to understand this so you won't think I just went ahead and posted another topic on your thread. What I did was printed some of the info that you already supplied in your link that day. K, thx, lololol!

"The difference between the threads you start and the threads that others start is that you post topics that interest YOU, and others take into consideration whether the topics they post would be of interest to OTHERS."

This is so true. When someone does not agree or refutes her schizoid skin color rants, she pouts, whines, complains and resorts to personal attacks by calling those who disagree with her names. She fantasies herself as some type of lofty educator, a fierce race warrior who is finally going to rid the authentic black race of half breeds, mixed race and light complexioned race traitors who have done nothing but humiliate, degrade, lie and subjugate darker complexioned (authentic) blacks. This is the bizzaro world of skin color paranoia she lives in.

"And just one last thing - the years go by fast. So you can sit there with your ageist self and insult the old people - but in life you either get old or die. You should get on your knees and pray to Jehovah God that you live as long as some of us have, because a lot of people aren't making it these days and the odds are against you."

Excellent point. And I wonder how she feels after getting thoroughly spanked by one of those menopausal women she attempted to degrade? Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! As I stated before, she has neither the articulation skills, intelligence nor the ability to write with the wit and brilliance as these menopausal women. Everyone who has read the posts in this thread can clearly see this for themselves. Now she will limp away wincing and whining even more and retreat to her authentic black world to lick her wounds. And what is most telling is her other fantasy of believing she is a teenager or your typical college freshman aged youth. She is not!! Yet she never passes up the opportunity to make negative comments about someones age with the intent of hurting them. Duhhhhhhh...???? How does that work? Personally I find it amusing but I have to question the motive for doing so. It's like mocking someone for being extremely overweight or for having very big ears; "I'm younger than you are!! Nah..nah..nah..nah..naaahhhhh!! You're older than me...I'm better than you are.!!! Hee..hee...hee..hee! WTF...?? Makes no sense. But when you have difficulty making sense period, this is just part of the package. Not realizing there is a teenager somewhere, who one day, will be her age and will address her as a menopausal old woman!

Tonya - The problem with your arguments is that you can't seem to comprehend the context of what was said to you and you're unable to remain rational. If you'll think waaaay back into the past - it was you who called me out my name. First. Remember??? Of course you do. So don't give me any of your phony baloney nonsense regarding forum conduct.

This forum IS moderated, by TROY. NOT KOLA. Which was my point. In case you missed the drama, let me refresh your memory:

http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/21646.html?1169580859

http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/21536.html#POST84931

http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/21536.html#POST84968

And yes, this was very necessary:

http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/22067.html#POST85534

In order to assert your belief that light-skinned Black people are superior to dark-skinned Black people since that is what you consistently and never-endingly proclaim here on this forum. So it must be true, right???
