Study Says Skin Tone Affects Earnings
Study says light-skinned immigrants in the U.S. earn more than darker-skinned ones
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 26, 2007
By TRAVIS LOLLER Associated Press Writer

Joni Hersch, a law and economics professor at Vanderbilt University, looked at a government survey of 2,084 legal immigrants to the United States from around the world and found that those with the lightest skin earned an average of 8 percent to 15 percent more than similar immigrants with much darker skin. AP Photo

(AP) Light-skinned immigrants in the United States make more money on average than those with darker complexions, and the chief reason appears to be discrimination, a researcher says.

Joni Hersch, a law and economics professor at Vanderbilt University, looked at a government survey of 2,084 legal immigrants to the United States from around the world and found that those with the lightest skin earned an average of 8 percent to 15 percent more than similar immigrants with much darker skin.

"On average, being one shade lighter has about the same effect as having an additional year of education," Hersch said.

The study also found that taller immigrants earn more than shorter ones, with an extra inch of height associated with a 1 percent increase in income.

Other researchers said the findings are consistent with other studies on color and point to a skin-tone prejudice that goes beyond race.

Hersh took into consideration other factors that could affect wages, such as English-language proficiency, education, occupation, race or country of origin, and found that skin tone still seemed to make a difference in earnings.

That means that if two similar immigrants from Bangladesh, for example, came to the United States at the same time, with the same occupation and ability to speak English, the lighter-skinned immigrant would make more money on average.

"I thought that once we controlled for race and nationality, I expected the difference to go away, but even with people from the same country, the same race _ skin color really matters," she said, "and height."

Although many cultures show a bias toward lighter skin, Hersch said her analysis shows that the skin-color advantage was not due to preferential treatment for light-skinned people in their country of origin. The bias, she said, occurs in the U.S.

Economics professor Shelley White-Means of the University of Tennessee at Memphis said the study adds to the growing body of evidence that there is a "preference for whiteness" in America that goes beyond race.

Hersch drew her data from a 2003 federal survey of nearly 8,600 new immigrants. The survey used an 11-point scale for measuring skin tone, in which 0 represents an absence of color and 10 the darkest possible skin tone.

From those nearly 8,600 participants, she focused on the more than 2,000 who were working and whose skin tone had been recorded during face-to-face interviews.

William Darity Jr., an economics professor at the University of North Carolina, said Hersch's findings are similar to a study he co-authored last year on skin tone and wages among blacks.

"We estimate that dark- or medium-skinned blacks suffered a discriminatory penalty of anywhere from 10 percent to 15 percent relative to whites," he said. "This suggests people cue into appearance and draw inferences about capabilities and skills based on how they look."

Darity said it is not clear whether the bias is conscious or subconscious.

Hersch said her findings, which will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science next month in San Francisco, could support discrimination lawsuits based not on race, but on color.

"There are very few color discrimination suits, but they are on the rise," she said. "But these suits can be hard to prove."

Yep. And we're going to keep on going because most people on this board are here to be educated, except Ntfs, but he can't help it; he's dumb and senile.

Do you think you are succeeding in educating anyone Tonya or are you preaching to the choir? It seems like the more this subject is discussed, the more the opposing sides become entrenched in their views.

wow, 2,084 immigrants is PROOF of something?

more of the same old grasping at "straws", by people (in this case tonya) attempting to somehow "make a point" of NOTHING.

tonya, what IS the point of you posting this?

some professor at some university conducts a "study" of about 2,000 immigrants, and this is supposed to convey or prove WHAT?

YAWN.............. is right!!!!!!

please tonya or ANYONE explain to me, what the HELL this "study" is proof of.

same old, tired, stale, "light skin-dark skin" blah, blah, blah, blah, GARBAGE.

why don't some of you who are SO concerned with this "light skin-dark skin" (alleged) issue, move to a place like THE CONGO, then you will be surrounded by ONLY dark skin people.

then you can rest and live in peace, knowing that there are no lighter people around you.

GREAT POST TONYA!

My "Oh Boy Here We Go" comments were because I knew the thread was going to get the above comments..Lil Ze and the like. How are those comments bringing anything CLOSE to educating "us" about anything...and particulary on the color issue. It seems to me to be like throwing darts at a dead horse..a bit abusive to me. Im just saying

People want to be educated??? Okay - here goes - this is the real deal:

1. Light-skinned Blacks have larger brains than dark-skinned Blacks, resulting in more intelligent light-skinned Blacks.

2. Light-skinned Blacks have better personalities and are just more charming in general.

3. Dark-skinned Blacks are bitter and self-loathing, they expend all their energy on complaining and being negative.

4. Light-skinned Blacks can read better than dark-skinned Blacks. Most dark-skinned Blacks can't read at all - they are largely illiterate.

5. Dark-skinned Blacks are clumsy and don't do well in job interviews. They are so stupid that they can't even find the location of the employment office.

6. Dark-skinned Blacks aren't as well-spoken as light-skinned Blacks. They tend to stutter and stammer and lose their train of thought.

7. Light-skinned Blacks don't face any discrimination from white people, therefore they have the potential to earn higher salaries than dark-skinned Blacks.

8. Light-skinned Blacks are naturally more talented and can dance and sing way better than dark-skinned Blacks. That's why there are so many light-skinned Black celebrity multi-millionaires.

9. Dark-skinned Blacks will never be as good as light-skinned Blacks, they'll never measure up. Just because.

10. Dark-skinned Blacks are just plain dumb. They can't even carry on a half-way intelligent conversation.

11. Dark-skinned Blacks should work ten times harder than light-skinned Blacks in order for their incomes to be commensurate to white people's.

12. Light-skinned Blacks look more God-like than Dark-skinned Blacks. They are pretty and have good hair.

13. Dark-skinned Blacks should do all they can to help the light-skinned Blacks get and stay ahead. That way the light-skinned Blacks might throw the dark-skinned Blacks some crumbs.

14. Light-skinned Blacks should lie around all day eating bon-bons. They are much too good for menial labor. That unpleasantness should be left to dark-skinned Blacks.

And there you have the top fourteen reasons why light-skinned Blacks are better and have an easier life than Dark-skinned Blacks. Any questions?

"Do you think you are succeeding in educating anyone Tonya or are you preaching to the choir? It seems like the more this subject is discussed, the more the opposing sides become entrenched in their views."

What choir? What opposing side???

This is a message board NOT a social club where people come to pledge allegiance, form allies and take sides. It’s a site where people come to give their opinions and share information... and I for one am tired of it being where folks come simply to take sides & win squabbles....Yawn....That's what's boring.

Lil Ze is a poster whose post I skip. It is a rare occasion when I'm reading one of his posts. I suggest you do the same. And when OTHERS start acting as he does, I put up the ignore sign. I said MOST people are here to be educated but some are here for one reason; and if you're like me, they ain't worth your time.

well done mzuri. VERY WELL DONE.

and tonya, you can attempt to ignore me all you want.

but the TRUTH is, that most of the posters on this board are NOT here to be "educated".

most of the posters on this board are here to EXCHANGE ideas and opinions.

just because some of the posters on this board don't accept the NEVER-ENDING crying about "light skin this, dark skin that", doesn't mean they are not "worth" your time (not that i think your "time" is really worth anything).

by the way, how do I act?

i understand that because i actually question the "shade of skin" GARBAGE that you (and others) are SO concerned about, that you are "bothered" or "upset" by my opinions.

but the REALITY is that everyone on this board does not agree with the endless RANTS about skin shade.

as long as certain posters continue the endless rants about shade of skin, there will ALWAYS be posters who will question or challenge this NONSENSE.

GET USED TO IT TONYA.

p.s.- tonya do you maybe want to exchange e-mails, so we can set-up a meeting, and i can show you what SERIOUS male/female PASSION is about?

come on tonya, you know DEEP DOWN inside we BOTH WANT EACH OTHER.

hugs and kisses- my beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uh huh....this is true. I'm not intellectually engaging, informative and educating as you are for droning on and on an on as to why I'm more "authentic" and more worthy than another black person because of skin color differences. I'm dumb and senile because I don't yelp and whine like a puppy whose paw was stepped on because another black persons skin is lighter than mine. And I've never attempted to discredit another black persons documented history because I didn't like their skin color. Yep, I'm not attempting to "educate" other black people with my never ending broken record posts and snivels about dark complexion vs. light complexion because I'm insecure and bitterly jealous of another black persons skin color. So, I guess you're right......

Well, here is something to be educated about, Tonya. There is a dichotomy of opinion on this board in regard to colorism and politics. There are people who share the same sentiments and who back up each other's arguments. That's what the star ratings are all about. People take sides.

Please. Take a look at the last 50 threads. It's the same 5 or 6 people at each other's neck for no good reason. You guys don't need a particular reason to turn this board into the Bloods & the Crips. Y'all hijack every thread y'all go to for that reason. The tribalism is out of control around here. And to top it all off, it's led by a bunch of menopausal women and instigated by the same rusty old elderly man. This board was created to find solutions to make all of our lives and community better. But we're here primarily so that young people will have better chances in life. So it's a SHAME that it's the oldest among us that are acting this irresponsibly. It's DISGRACEFUL that ghetto street fights and TRIBALISM is all you guys are interested in.

How do you know what this board was created to do, Tonya? Did you create it? Forget all of that "noble drivel". Anything goes on this board; it is a spontaneous free-for-all and you have the gall to try and place yourself above the fray. You had to know that the post you started would evoke the reaction it did, especially since it echoed the colorism whine that you are a chief proponent of. And whether you know it or not, you are no different from or more progressive than anybody else on this board. You just do your own version of spouting off.

"Please. Take a look at the last 50 threads. It's the same 5 or 6 people at each other's neck for no good reason."

Ok. I did. And? What is your point? People have every right to challenge, support, agree or disagree as they please. That is the premise of this forum. Sorry if you didn't notice.

"You guys don't need a particular reason to turn this board into the Bloods & the Crips."

How so? I certainly don't see that happening. Just because your skin is too thin to take criticism, don't assume everyone else is the same. I recall you whining (as usual) and threatening to leave the board (which we all new was a lie) because you couldn't stand the heat of criticism or your feelings were hurt because certain threads or posts did not fit within your narrow and distorted views.

"Y'all hijack every thread y'all go to for that reason. The tribalism is out of control around here."

What world are you living in? There is no tribalism around here. People agree and disagree all the time. As I said, since your skin is so thin and your sensitivities are so easily hurt, you have to project your own insecurities (not just your skin color) onto other people. Sorry my dear, but you are the only one whining (as expected) and sobbing because readers collectively don't agree with you. Get over it!!!

"And to top it all off, it's led by a bunch of menopausal women and instigated by the same rusty old elderly man."

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! That's funny. First of all, you have yet to match the articulation, intelligence and wisdom of the menopausal women you have attempted to besmirch. Secondly, I don't know if any one has told you yet, but you aren't exactly the poster child for spring fresh youth yourself. You're in your thirties now sweet heart! You're not old, but ya ain't as young as ya think! So ya might rethink your juvenile digs (which don't work) about age. And what in the hell does any one's age have to do with you agreeing or not agreeing with what they write..??????

"This board was created to find solutions to make all of our lives and community better."

Uhhhhhhh....wrong...again! This particular forum was created to exchange ideas, inform, enlighten, discuss and debate. It was created for writers and non-writers alike to participate. It was not created as a race based think tank for solutions!

"But we're here primarily so that young people will have better chances in life. So it's a SHAME that it's the oldest among us that are acting this irresponsibly."

First of all you're not that young! Secondly, age has no bearing whatsoever as to what is posted or written about here. Cheeezzzz.....Ya know something, if you are so concerned about age, perhaps you should go to myspace.com. I think this forum would be more appropriate for you. By going there, you will be more comfortable with those who share a similar maturity and intellectual level. Plus, you can be the crusty old elderly woman there.. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

"It's DISGRACEFUL that ghetto street fights and TRIBALISM is all you guys are interested in."

Uh huh...and all this ghetto street fighting and tribalism is the result of readers rejecting your tired and boring racially divisive schizoid skin color attacks and paranoia. Sorry to bust your bubble my dear, but I think the problem is you, not the readers who dismiss your whining and racism.
