Ok boardie friends, tomorrow, I'm heading down to the Long Beach court house to shoot the after math of the verdict. Frankly, I think it's all media hype regarding a riot if the verdict isn't favorable to the teens. What ya'll think ?

Oh yeah, I'm referring to the "hate crime" trial with the 10 youths and 3 white women that were attacked on Halloween.

9 Convicted in SoCal Halloween Beatings
By GREG RISLING
January 26, 2007

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A juvenile court judge on Friday convicted eight black girls and one boy of beating three white women on Halloween night, but acquitted one girl of all charges.

Judge Gibson Lee also found hate-crime enhancements to be true for the eight defendants whose cases included that allegation.

Some of the defendants hugged before the verdicts were read and some cried after hearing the decisions.

Lee scheduled a Jan. 31 disposition hearing. The youths could receive sentences ranging from probation to confinement in the California Youth Authority until they reach the age of 25.

The defendants ranged in age from 12 to 18. Two who were minors at the time turned 18 since the incident.

All were charged with felony assault by any means of force likely to produce great bodily injury.

Two 15-year-old boys face trial later on charges of felony assault with the hate-crime enhancement.

As in all juvenile trials, a judge decided the case rather than a jury.

The attack occurred in an upscale area of the city known for its elaborate Halloween decorations.

Long Beach, 22 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, is a major U.S. cargo port with a racially diverse population of 475,000 and neighborhoods ranging from high-end shoreline condos to low-income urban areas.

Prosecutors said the confrontation began when a crowd of black youths threw objects at the three women, two who were 19 and one who was 21. Some hurled racial insults at the women and one was heard shouting "I hate whites," authorities said.

A group then attacked the victims, knocking them to the ground. The beating only ceased when a black man driving by stopped, pulled the assailants away and shielded the women with his body, prosecutors said.

Deputy District Attorney Andrea Bouas called the incident a "mauling" and discounted some testimony that it was more of a fight than an attack. Prosecutors relied mainly on witnesses who said they saw some or all of the beating.

Other evidence included a victim's cell phone found in a defendant's car and blood found on a defendant's pants. But the judge barred DNA evidence the prosecution said proved the blood was from one victim, citing time constraints in the trial.

Defense attorneys tried to discredit a key prosecution witnesses, saying it was too dark and she was too far away to see who the assailants were. They also deemed a police identification procedure "tainted" because the victims and witnesses weren't asked to describe the attackers until they were shown the 10 suspects.

Only one of the victims testified. Loren Hymon, who suffered multiple fractures to her face, said earrings and hairstyles helped her identify four assailants.

The male defendant testified that he didn't hit any of the women.

The trial at one point was overshadowed by suspected witness intimidation. A prosecution witness was put under police escort after she awoke to find six men sitting on her car. Her vehicle was later rammed by someone as she spoke in court, which led the judge to allow witnesses to testify anonymously. Lee later reversed his decision.

Tensions and emotions were high. It was a freakin circus when I arrived. Civilians and reporters dashed from one area to another in a frenzy. Pushing and shoving. I arrived @ 12pm just in time for the press conference/prayer vigil led by community acitivists, Eddie Jones, Dr. Earl Ofari Hutchinson, Big Money (all pictured at mics in photos below) and others. There was a heavy police presence. One woman whom I believe just wanted media attention, cause the news media appeared to out number the spectators and supporters. This woman manuevered through the crowd, waving and shouting hostile comments and stated that" my baby don't hate nobody, she has half white cousins, we have white people in our family."(paraphrased) I listened to many perspectives from old and young, black and white and they tended to unaminously agree that the 9 female defendants on trial shouldn't have been on trial. According to official 911 police transcripts, witnesses originally reported seeing a group of male youth dressed in black hooded sweat shirts attacking the three white women. So the question is how were the 9 female defendants selected, tried, and charged. If you're interested in an alternative perspective that's not reported by the mainstream media

Naw Mzuri... as far as I know there wasn't any civil unrest in Long Beach. That was media hype as usual. The folks in the photo with the flowers in front of them were apparently relatives of some of the female defendants. They were quite confident that the girls would not be guilty...

I just saw on KTLA news there was singing outside the courthouse (prior to the verdicts) and then a press conference with the
parents. I don't know who did what but it's amazing how most of the parents assert that their children could do no wrong.
I'm glad that I don't trip that way. Our children commit the same types of mischief that we did and unless you're watching
them 24/7 you have no way to know what their bad asses are doing.
