I saw Stanley Crouch credit actress/comedienne Mo'Nique with being the modern day mammie figure to White foks.
He said White foks feel some sense of security and superiority in Mo'Nique's loud, confrontational, wild and ghetto persona.
You believe that to be true? Is Mo'Nique, by Crouch's own assertions, the Hattie McDaniel of the 21st Century? |

I don't think the average upper-middle to upper class white person feels a "sense of security" with Mo'Nique --at all, because her 'uncouth' (public) behavior is seen as too unpredictable. However, I think that has the potential to make those same individuals feel a sense of superiority. |

I suppose I left out an important component of Mammiology: The great GIRTH of the Black women who are made to symbolize such. One CAN'T be an effective mammy if one is not at least +70 lbs overweight.
And Mo'Nique most CERTAINLY fulfills THAT particular criterion.

ABM, I understand that we need to know what role Black caricatures play(ed) in the public's psyche. But what do we do about it: throw all our loud, fat, black women overboard because they make some people feel superior?
And what makes Crouch think that white people are the only ones to feel this way? There are a lot of people who are as black and loud as Monique but feel superior to her because she's not skinny.
And aren't "Mammies" the type that goes around kissing white people's ass? How did Crouch come up with Monique as a "mammy"?????
Btw, I'm a fan of Monique's, the same way I'm a fan of Rosie O’Donnell even though I don't like her. Both women speak their mind regardless of what others might think. |

Crouch is off the mark with this one. I find nothing nurturing in a mammy sort of way about Mo'Nique's persona.

LOL, Mzuri. Stanley could be considered America's modern day Uncle Remus since he is often accused of spinning tales to pacify white folks. And I agree, Crystal. Monique is much too intimidating and abrasive to be a Mammy figure. She's one of white America's worst nightmares; a black woman who has enough leverage to throw her considerable weight around. |

I'm not suggesting that ANYTHING be done with and to Mo'Nique. I mean, I'm not a fan of hers. But she hasn't really done anything I'd actively protest or boycott.
I am just asking WHETHER, as Crouch argues, Mo'Nique does in fact meet the criteria of the modern day mammy.
Btw: I think you do a disservice to Mo'Nique via juxtaposing her with Rosie. Because the big difference between them is that Rosie seems to ABHOR a LOT of people, ESPECIALLY those who disagree with her.
I don't get much of ANY of that from Mo'Nique. |

I wouldn't say Monique is a mammy figure. She certainly wouldn't make white folks feel comfortable.
