Descendants of American Slavery have a very conflicted view of the perception of Black beauty. In many respects, we revel in certain remarkable, often legendary aspects of Blackness: Exquisite West African derriere, the legend of the great Black penis and superior Black athleticism, agility & rhythm (manifesting in our dance & music), greater resistance to appearing aged. Conversely, we'd rather NOT be too darkskinned, rather or lips not appear too big, or nose too wide.
Thus our faithful reinforcement of the One-Drop-Rule. |

that is true. and? Part of it is, as KOla suggests, the embrace of european aesethetis as our, that black peope's, barometer of beauty...the other is, any extremity, regardless of cultural group aesthetic is too much.... |

Abm,
I always find the topic of "features" interesting, because there are certain features that white people don't want either, especially a hook/long/real pointy nose and/or really, really pale skin. And, generally, wide noses and (really) big lips are just as unattractive as a hook/pointy/long nose and (really) thin lips. Whites just don't debate this type of shyt as much as blacks --they just have plastic surgery and then have a party!

White Americans don't bear all the results of slavery, Jim Crow, brown paper bag testing, etc. ALONG with the criteria you mentioned. Many White foks can more easily (e.g., Jews) BREED out of having less-than-desireable traits WITHOUT having to navigate the one-drop-rule and myriad other perils and contradictions associated with being African American.
For African Americans, so MUCH of our destiny will ride on our physical proximity to Whiteness and/or our lack there of. |

Is it really about "Whiteness", though? Because it seems that most (sane) black people have zero desire to be white. Therefore, it's seems apparent that blacks have created a standard within their own community regarding features. And, again, just like there are certain features that whites consider unattractive, blacks are the same way --but the social implications are different because of history --almost as if blacks (MY OPINION) have to be accepting and claim EVERY other BLACK PERSON as beautiful because they will be considered "wrong", "sell-out", "self-hating" if they don't. It's a very bizarre dynamic, to me.

I agree, Yukio, that no ethnic group wants features that are grotesque rather than typical. The classic Nordic look is what really influences beauty standards world wide, and Anglo-Saxon and Gallic people, not to mention the Serbs and the Slavs have less than perfect features. And Critics always think black women are the only ones who want to look a certain way. And this isn't true. |

And don't see many Black foks who assert that ALL Black foks must be considered beautiful. Most Black foks I know seem quite adept at calling (LOTS of) other Black foks ugly.

Perhaps. I think lots of women, Black and non-Black, do female affirmation stuff. For example, those recent Hanes lady underwear commercials and posters that featured plus-sized women included Black, White AND Brown women.
Most men are NOT going to waste much time arguing that some ugly mofo is goodlooking. Hell. We're not even going to expend much effort saying some HANDSOME mofo is goodlooking. |

And, ABM, I will go as far as to 'say' it's also usually unattractive women who feel this way --REGARDLESS of color. I don't want to seem callous when I write that, but it has simply been my observation that they (unattractive women) are incredibly defensive regarding this issue. |
