If it's true, then it's just a sad commentary on the chronic stereotyping of black women in America. But then again, the nigga may be out of work. He didn't get paid a dime for Dreamgirls. Luckily for him, he chose the wise move of playing that part for virtually free, and ended up with a Globe for his efforts. Too bad he can't get over the "Nutty Professor" rut, even though he is tapping Babyface's ex Tracey, who "ain't" exactly 400 lbs.

I've SELDOM enjoyed travestite humor, regardless of the color or girth of the characterization. This always appears to be a very old and boring way to attempt to score cheap jokes.

Martin Lawrence's character "Shanaynay" was hilarious in the 90s.

I am just thinking maybe Edina AKA Eddie should tone it down a few notchs because his FLAMING embers are starting to GLOW very brightly. To answer your question, although I do enjoy a Madea play/movie every now and then the trend of BLACK MALE comedians cross dressing is becoming a little played out. Hell, I use to get sick of Ricky Smiley talking like an old church lady on Comicview so no, it ain't THAT funny to see a brotha dressed up like a woman in order to do comedy.

Eddie has really lost his edge. He used to be so impish and nasty and funny. Now he's all reserved and full of propriety and his wrist does seemed to have gotten a little limp, making his yen to take on the role of a fat female a little suspect.

Do you all remember when he claimed he would do no more raunchy or curse filled movies because of becoming a father? Well, that is fine but can he at least make them FUNNY?

at can't be worse than "little man" by the wayan's brothers. that movie made gili look good. i like eddie murphy he is a legend and a comedic gienus, yes his movies haven't been on par with his classics. every shining star loses it's luster or falls eventually, but i won't kick a brutha when he's down. eddie will always be one of my favorite actors.

I saw a billboard for the movie this morning and I was NOT amused. Unless the content of the movie is redeemable in some way I'm gonna have to give this a thumbs down and a big "phuck you Eddie"!

I fail to see the allure of this whole "different skin" genre:

*male actors playing women
*female actors playing men
*grown actors playing children
*child actors playing adults
*Black (and other) actors playing non-Black characters
*White actors playing non-White characters
*(Presumably) straight actors playing gay characters
*Thin actors playing overweight characters
*Plus all the permutations, such as a straight skinny male actor playing a gay character who is pretending to be straight overweight female character who is from outter space in the future...

Bleh! Gimmicks, all! It'd be different if the storylines were anywhere near entertaining or offered a new twist--but so far as I have seen, they do not.

Yvette, have you seen Whoopi Goldberg in "The Associate"? If not, rent it when you have a moment. I think it might give you a different perspective.

Me? I'm fascinated by the special fx - how real they make these costumes look is amazing. Murphy looks ridiculous in that hot pink bra, but the detail looks so precise. I believe it's possible to think a dress is ugly but appreciate the tailoring.

Yvettep,

Hillary Swank won an Oscar for playing the real life story of a girl who pretends to be a boy in Boys Don't Cry. She was so absolutely convincing in that role it's unnerving.

But I generally agree with you about these trite "different skin" portrayals. They're almost always just very CHEAP attempts at scoring laughs via some recognizeable actor stumbling around in a dress and high heels.

Robin Williams playing "Mrs Doubtfire" and Dustin Hoffman playing "Tootsie", set precedents, and earned so much money at the box office that impersonating the opposite sex now seems to have become a sure-fire way to sell movie tickets.
