Bro ABM, I felt compelled to respond to your comment and the posting of Kathleen Cleaver picture. I must be honest by first saying I was somewhat stunned and taken back by your comment about not knowing who Kathleen Cleavers is or what her politics and philosophies are. Being that you are a pretty sharp brother with a very good sense of history…well…as I said, I was taken back. And I say that not to be disrespectful or inimical because I’m sure you’re probably not the only one who is not aware of her history or achievements. I felt that it was necessary to write a commentary to counter the distorted and grossly unfair mis-characterization of this woman. That said, let me set the record straight about her not being a black woman
Although Kathleen Neal Cleaver first came to the attention of the public because of her relationship with Eldridge Cleaver and the Black Panther Party, she has many accomplishments outside of her relationship with the two. She has always been known for her life long political advocacy against racism. She is also known for being a gifted lawyer and educator who is in great demand as a lecturer and has published numerous articles in newspapers and magazines.
Just to give you a brief history about this alleged “white woman”, she came from an academically and politically astute family since her father was (Ernest Neal) was a college professor and mother (Juette Johnson Neal) held a master's degree in mathematics. When her father joined the Foreign Service, Kathleen acquired extensive traveling experience living in countries like India, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the Philippines. Kathleen left West Africa and returned to the US, graduated from HS (with honors) in 1963 and enrolled in Oberlin College and later transferred to the prestigious Barnard College in New York. In 1966, she left college to work in the New York office of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC –I’m sure you are aware of this organization). She then migrated to sweltering abyss of violence and racism in Georgia in 1967 to organize black students against a violent white southern culture of Apartheid. Needless to say, this set off a series of life-altering events.
As secretary of SNCC's campus program, she galvanized the efforts of resistance at a black student conference at Fisk University. One of the attendees at the conference happened to be the minister of information for the Black Panther Party -Eldridge Cleaver. Attracted by the Party's more politically radical approach to social change, she left SNCC and joined the Black Panther Party and moved to San Francisco in November 1967.
As the national communications secretary, she became the first female member of the Party's decision-making body, the Central Committee. She served as the Party's spokesperson and press secretary, delivering speeches across the country that condemned police violence and racism. She also ran in 1968 ( unsuccessfully) for the California State Assembly on the ticket of the Peace and Freedom party.
After a disagreement between Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver in 1971, he and Kathleen along with former international members, formed the Revolutionary People's Communication Network. Kathleen once again used heir fiery oratorical skills and public relations talents to promote the organization.
She continued with the organization while her husband Eldrige (whom she divorced in 1987), faced legal battles and which lead to his fleeing the US to live in Cuba, Algeria and France. When his legal situation was finally settled in 1980 (he agreed to plead guilty to three counts of assault in return for having the charge of attempted murder dropped), Kathleen returned to college. In August 1981, she received a full scholarship to Yale University. She graduated in 1983, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, with a bachelor of arts degree in history and received a law degree from Yale Law School in 1988. She then joined and worked for the New York City law firm of Cravath, Swaine and Moore. In 1991, She accepted a position as a law clerk in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1991. In 1992, she joined the faculty of Emory School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia, where she taught. She has won fellowships from Harvard University, Rutgers, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. I believe she is currently a Senior Research Associate at the Yale Law School. I'd have to check to be 100% sure.
She continues to lead a very politically active life, writing and lecturing for the elimination of racism and sexism. Kathleen Cleaver has dedicated her entire adulthood to the struggle against racism beginning with her involvement with SNCC and the original Black Panther Party in the 1960’s. So efforts to suggest she somehow is not a black woman, according to the rhetoric of twisted skin-color crazed bigots, is beyond ridiculous. Her entire life has been devoted to the liberation of black people. Take note: She began fighting against racism when her inane detractors were either small children or were not even born!
Ask yourself, where were they or what were they doing when she was organizing blacks against racial oppression in the sweltering heat of the South in 1967? What gives them the right to dismiss her as a black woman? What are their qualifications for doing so other than having darker skin? And what are their academic qualifications when compared to hers (which I seriously doubt even comes close)? And finally, what have they done to address institutional racism for the past 40 years?
This woman is an internationally recognized political figure and an established figure in American history. Don’t you find it strange that those who have attempted to mock her will never achieve nor duplicate what she has done? Bottom line: Don’t believe the hype bro. This black woman has been a warrior all her life for the freedom of black people. And when did it become advantageous for black people set a criteria of skin color as a measurement of worth or validity? Isn’t that the same criteria racists have historically used to oppress and brutalize black people?

One more thing, I also felt it necessary to give a better explanation of the photo that was posted. In the photo, You can see three black women standing together. All three have long histories of stepping up to the plate to fight against racism and the oppression of black people. The photo was taken at an event that was held at the First Congregational Church in Oakland, in 2004. The woman on the left is Angela Davis, middle is Kathleen Cleaver and the right is Mabel Williams. I’m sure you know who Angela Davis is and her history as an uncompromising warrior against racism and the unfairness of the justice system. No need to detail her biography here.
But I would like to add that a very good friend of mine was her roommate at UCSD in the 60’s. I questioned her very intensely about Angela Davis. She told me she was exactly the same back then as she is now –very committed and uncompromising in her beliefs. Yes, she was eye candy to most of the brothers on campus but she said Angela would have no part of it. She was friendly and courteous to everyone but she was strictly business and all about politics. She was very committed to fighting racism and class inequities. That’s all she talked about. After graduation with a masters degree, she moved to Germany to study for her PhD and did work at UCLA. My friend told me she was very intense and the black students at UCSD looked up to her for intoxicating speeches and talks against racism and the evils of capitalism.
The middle woman is Kathleen Cleaver. No need to say anymore about her. I think I have cleared the air about her accomplishments and her personal efforts to address racism, police violence and the liberation of subjugated blacks in America.
The third black woman on the right is Mabel Williams. Her husband, Robert Williams, organized blacks for armed self-defense in the South against white racist attacks. He was also president of the NAACP in Monroe, North Carolina. Robert and his wife Mabel, organized blacks to arm themselves in order to repel and prevent ongoing violent attacks on black communities by the Ku Klux Klan and opposing the racism of local white controlled governmental agencies. She has a audio CD (Self Respect, Self Defense & Self Determination) that details this history. One story that struck me was her description of a story (North Carolina) where two little black boys were sent to a "retraining centre for an undetermined amount of time" after they were kissed by a white girl. Such were the times.
I encourage all to review the details of the Williams struggle for equality against Southern racism and their years in exile after fleeing the country when Robert was falsely accused of kidnapping charges by the FBI (orchestrated by no other than J. Edgar Hoover). The Williams lived in Cuba and China from 1961-1969.
All three of the black women in the photograph have dedicated their lives to
civil rights, self-defense and resistance to racism in various black liberation movements. So, I find such unwarranted vicious attacks on any of these fabulous black women, who put their lives on the line for their people, for no other reason than skin color, to be capricious, arbitrary and pathetically self serving. E’nuff said…..

Yukio, you aren't being truthful at all when you say that woman doesn't look white. I personally, don't care who and what she identifies with, but anybody who denies that she doesn't have the physical appearance of a Caucasion is straight up lyin. |

Yes, NTFS, I was enlightened in regard to Kathleen Cleaver. I knew she had impeccable academic crendentials and I remember she was much-in-demand as a guest on talk show panels during the 1960s because she was so articulate but I didn't remember her embodying that much power within the Panther ranks, possibly because, back then, the public wasn't that privvy to the inner workings of the California branch of the Black Panther Party. Of course none of this will change the minds of the die-hards who think her white skin disqualifies her from being physically "black". As for the equally-impressive Angela Davis, I followed her highly-publicized trial very closely when she was captured on-the-run after being suspected of aiding and abetting the prison escape of panther George Jackson, a crime from which she was later acquitted. As I have bragged many times, back in the 60s, when I used to wear a huge Afro, people always remarked that Angela and I looked alike. |

If you are talking to me, Brownbeauty, I can't emphasize to you enough that Kathleen's nappy hair to me is a dead-giveaway in regard to her hasving black blood in her! In my life time, I've come across many people who we referred to as Merignies, very light-skinned folks with nappy sandy hair and who always went for black. |

I cannot see the texture of her hair in the picture. But if I saw her white skin, and kinky hair in person, I would assume she was multiracial-- because they can have kinky hair also. |

In this day of perms and weaves and wigs, hair is no longer a race marker. But there was a time when black folks always scrutinized a light person's hair and if it was nappy in the "kitchen" at the back of the neck and around the temples and "went home" when it got wet, these people were outed as being black if by chance there were trying not to be, and most of the time they weren't |

It always boils down to terms: mixed, multi-racial, half-breed, mulatto, - whatever. All of these terms are indicative of black blood mixed with something else. A person who is half and half is as much black as they are white and I don't understand why that's such a bone of contention. |

There is a major difference between kinky hair that has been relaxed, and someone who has naturally fine textured hair. Since most Black women wear weaves/wigs they are usually able to tell right away if a person has "good hair" or not. |

But, in this day and age, if someone that looked like her said that she was white, I'd be skeptical, but I would say...kewl and keep it movin.

In fact, if we want to really break it down, aint no such thing as multiracial, since aint no such thing as race. In that sense, no one is either black or white or multiracial....at the end of the day, it is all about what you believe...that is all we are really talking about once we submit distinguishing folk by race. |

That's a good start. "of African (descent)" is the real key that many people seem to miss. "Americans (having) African descent" is correct. On the other hand, "of" implies exclusivity, which does appear to be the true intention invested in the adoption of the AA identity by the self-anointed black American leadership. |

Not exactly..."of" may imply "exclusive," but it means derivative. In addition, the sentence that you quoted pertains to the Americas, as in South, North, Central America and the Caribbean, not the solely U.S. Remember, I said it is a contiental identity, with a different nomenclature than that intiated by the folk of which you are writing. |

People forget that African-American is an ethnicity and not necessarily a race. Kola imagines that black people everywhere are interchangeable. This is untrue. There are differences even within Africa. There are full-blooded Africans with skin the color of mustard(esp. in South Africa), and are full-blooded. And black for her is different from being African, first of all. Similarly, the issues of color is only relevant for her when it derives from non-blacks. Her phenotype is "black" according to the ODR standard. Otherwise, she's very mixed, but certainly not pure Nordic Caucasian and definitely not Aryan Caucasian. However, if you exclude the shackles of the ODR and U.S. race history, then she could definitely be considered white - as in the ODR in reverse, etc. |
