I find your praising VC's having a degree reminds me of something that pertains that.
About 7 years when he was with the Toronto Raptors, there was a big bruhaha over VC wanting to attend his graduating classes commencement exercise at UNC which was earlier on the SAME day as the pivotal Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between Toronto and the Philadelphia 76'ers.
He wanted to go, largely because his mother wanted to see him get his degree during the official commencement ceremony. Tornoto's team, media and fans preferred that he skipped the commencement fearing it would affect his performance during the later that day.
Well. Vince attended the commencement, then immediately flew back to Philadelphia. Vince had his WORSE game of the series . Toronto lost to the 76'ers with VC woefully missing a potentially game-tying shot (76'ers went on the NBA Final).
Toronto never again got close to being a great team. VC's game tanked, and MANY thought he was just mailing it in hopes of getting trade, which he eventually to New Jersey a couple years ago. |

Yeah, okay. But he missed one game? What the heck were his teammates doing? Or was he supposed to win the game by himself?
Shaq got his BA after the season was over, and the NBA was strangely silent. No congrats. No photo ops. I don't believe the NBA wants their stars to be too smart.

He didn't miss the game. But his attending the commencement negatively affected his performance.
And he was the STAR of the team. Along with his getting the fatter paycheck, endorsement deal and credit for the team's successes comes the blame, consternation and second-guessing when the team loses.
And why should the NBA celebrate Shaq doing what he's a$$ SHOULD have went to college to do in the first place? Graduate! |

Abm-Basketball is a five man game. When one of the stars is off his game, it's a chance for others to pick up the slack and make a name for themselves-especially in the playoffs. VC is lucky to be gone from "the Rapture". LOL.
The NBA cares nothing about the players being educated. If they did they would stop recruiting athletes until they have graduated from college. The NCAA is merely a farm system for the pros. VC was right to walk in his graduation ceremony, pick up a degree and have his picture taken to be shown in newspapers around the country-in a cap and gown with a diploma, rather than in shorts with a ball.
Isn't that what we want our young boys to be? |

The man was off his game because he chose to do something he shouldn't have done. Prior to his pulling that stunt, Carter had been having a marvelous series.
It was all bvllshyt ego. If he were so dayam concerned about being with his college graduating class, he wouldn't have left North Carolina after his junior year to be drafted by the NBA to begin with.
Yes. Basketball is a 5-man game. But the team wins/loses based on how the STAR performs. Vince was the STAR. Yet when his team and fans needed him most of all, bottomline...Vince Carter let ALL of them down.
Lastly, the NBA is a sport league that designed to profit from providing its fans the most entertaining brand of basketball imaginable. It's neither the job or the ethical responsibility of NBA that it's players reach certain educational achievements.
And what I find ironic about your condemnations of what you allege to be the NBA's lackluster support of education is that were it NOT for the NBA you probably wouldn't even know who the hell Vince Carter IS much less concern yourself about whether he got to attend his commencement exercises. |

Vince did not let anyone down. He fulfilled a promise to his mother, which is admirable and a great example for kids. So a man can't have a degree and play basketball? Of course the NBA made Vince a star. But he plays on a five man team. His teammates should have picked up the slack for one game, bottom line. If the NBA is not responsible for education, why do they recruit from colleges? Why not just go to some pick up games and sign kids from the streets?
VC is doing much better and is much happier in New Jersey. The Raptors are still under .500 and he has been long gone. |

I never said anything cross about his getting a degree. I commend his doing that. But given the gravity of what his job - that pays him MILLIONS - at that particular moment in is professional life and career made his insistence on attending the ceremony appear profoundly selfish.
And when I last checked New Jersey and Toronto had basically IDENTICAL Won-Lost records. |
