Did Luther Vandross make any live albums?
I never heard one and never heard him live and a friend has told me his vocal brilliance was all studio magic.
I figured if I listen to a live album (I'll get one from the library or download it--I wouldn't spend a nickel on that fluff) I could resolve the dispute. |

I remember Ole Blue Eyes (Frank Sinatra) used to appear with a bunch of background singers and a string orchestra to cover up the fact that his pipes were gone. |

I have not heard this particular album, no. But I have darn near everything else that Luther ever recorded to include "The Glow of Love" which came out before Luther became well-known. If I ever even thought that Luther had been faking the funk that whole time and couldn't really sang - I would be DEVASTATED!!!

Personally, I like Luther's earlier recordings (e.g.,Forever, For Always, For Love, Never Too Much,, etc) when he was young and hungry. He was at his best then. His later recordings became over produced with sappy arrangements and too commercial for me. But I once saw him in concert live (with Anita Baker and bro Sinbad) and he sounded great.
About ten years a go, I walked into a gym in Yokosuka, Japan after working out (there were two gym facilities) and I heard this wonderful voice singing. I walked into the gym and there was Peabo Bryson singing!! He sounded just like he does in his recordings. It was amazing. I'll never forget that because his voice struck me for it's clarity and sound. We all know about the Milli Vanilli syndrome but it definity was not the case when I saw Luther and Peabo. There was no faking the funk!!

I've seen Luther in person and he sounded just fine. The smooth quality and timbre of his voice and the ease with which he sang was a very natural. I also remember seeing him in a video which appeared to have been shot live, where he was singing "Super Star" on stage in front of an audience and he sounded great. |
