I highly recommend everyone requesting commemorative stamps honoring black Americans. The Post Master will continue to press and release these stamps only if there is a demand for them. I personally have a collection of stamps recognizing and honoring the achievements and contributions of black Americans. I encourage all of you to please request black commemorative stamps when buying them at the post office. We shouldn't always expect others to honor and support our heroes.
ELLA FITZGERALD GETS U.S. POSTAL HONOR: 'The First Lady of Song' to be on Stamp
January 10, 2007
NEW YORK -- The U.S. Postal Service will honor Ella Fitzgerald as the 30th inductee into its Black Heritage stamp series. Fitzgerald was widely known as "The First Lady of Song."
Her extraordinary vocal range and flexibility, combined with her gift for pitch, rhythmic sense, and flawless diction, made her a favorite of fans, songwriters and other singers.
The stamp image is a portrait based on a photograph taken circa 1956 that captures the joy and excitement that Fitzgerald brought to music.
Who: Nancy Wilson, Fitzgerald long-time friend, internationally-renowned song stylist and actress; Ray Brown, Jr., Fitzgerald's son; Jennifer Sanon, vocalist; James Moody, saxophonist and NEH Jazz Master who performed with Fitzgerald; Phoebe Jacobs, Fitzgerald long-time friend and Executive Vice President, The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, Inc.; Paul Davis, Fitzgerald stamp artist; Ethel Kessler, Fitzgerald stamp designer; Kathy Brown, Executive Director, Jazz at Lincoln Center; Delores J. Killette, Vice President and Consumer Advocate United States Postal Service; Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, Pastor, Abyssinian Baptist Church, New York, NY
When: 11 a.m. (ET), Wed., Jan. 10, 2007
Where: Jazz at Lincoln Center The Allen Room in Frederick P. Rose Hall Broadway at 60th Street, 5th Floor New York, NY 10001
Background: The Postal Service began issuing its popular Black Heritage stamp series in 1978 with a stamp honoring Harriet Tubman. Ella Fitzgerald joins a long list of legendary African-American leaders, inventors, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, entertainers, and athletes, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Marian Anderson, Malcolm X, and Madam C.J. Walker, who have appeared in the stamp series.
Art Director, Ethel Kessler, lauds the stamp portrait of Fitzgerald by illustrator Paul Davis of New York for the way it captures the joy and excitement she brought to music. The stamp ceremony is free and open to the public.

Ella was an embodiment of BLACK elegance, grace, and strength. I am so pleased to see that she is being honored. She did so much to help children realize better lives. Class ACT! |

It's just another scam so they can screw us out of our money--every other day they bring out a Negro on a stamp and scream that if we don't buy it up they'll discontinue it--I bet there's Negroes with fifty and sixty dollars worth of stamps in their basement.

Well it ain't like it costs people more to buy a commemorative stamp than a regular one, chrishayden, and lord knows black folks gotta mail off their house and car notes and can just as easily use commemorative stamps as flag ones, and, above all, Cynique wants to continue to get her postal pension and its cost of living raises. So chill. |

Cynique...the post office lets you retire AND get their general pay adjustments? Did you also participate in the Thrift Savings Plan or FERS?
Damn, I'm envious!
That's damn good. I thought I was doing something working at one of their remote encoding centers as a temporary (when I was waaaay younger).

No, Americansista, they just introduced the thrift savings and FERS the year I retired. I just get a pension and life insurance and medicare. And I don't know how any regular on this board doesn't know I spent 30 years employed by the Post Office, chrishayden, as many times as I have mentioned it in connection with my boast that being exposed to the broad cross section of people who work at the PO makes me able to relate to folks on all levels. Jeeze! |

The about the Federal Govt., the retirements benefits are wonderful. Now yall's pay is better than a lot of govt. agencies (when I worked there as a temp, a Union Rep. came to our orientation and talked about how postal workers went on strike and how the govt. had the national guard doing mail and it was disasterous so the post office got signficant pay increases).
I could not retire from this job by just what they could give me. I don't trust them that much, but I have an additional 457 plan that is KILLING what I have already accumulated from my mandatory retirement plan. I have more than a few years before I can retire but I like to plan ahead! |
