Oprah: inner-city kids want iPods and sneakers, not education by Carmen Van Kerckhove

I was watching Paula Zahn last night (By the way, is Asian eyelid surgery really still news anymore? They spent a whole segment on it!) and they had a panel discussing the recent opening of the $40 million Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

Oprah recently gave an interview to Newsweek and explained why she decided to do this project in South Africa instead of in the States:

“I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn’t there,” she says. “If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.”

Sigh… her remark frustrates me on so many levels. Please excuse the incoherent rant that is about to follow.

First, I hate this hypocritical assumption that poor people shouldn’t be allowed to have/buy nice things. I recently read a really great blog post that broke it down nicely, but unfortunately couldn’t find it anywhere (if anyone knows what I’m talking about, please post a link).

All of us, regardless of our income/wealth level, spend money on things that we really can’t afford. We all aspire to own objects that are out of our reach. This is not some kind of “inner city mentality.” It’s a mindset that we all buy into, pun intended.

Also, don’t we all go for the instant gratification over the long-term gratification? Can you really blame a kid for wanting an iPod more than something as amorphous as “education?”

Is it any different from giving into that craving for a piece of chocolate cake (instant gratification) instead of denying yourself so that you can stick to your diet (long-term gratification)? You’d think Oprah would know a thing or two about that, considering how much time she devotes to discussing her “struggle” with her weight.

Between this and her comments about hip hop, I feel like Oprah is setting a dangerous example for her demographic (i.e. white soccer moms and their families) to believe in these essentialist notions about young black and Latino youth.

“Even Oprah thinks that all they want to do is buy sneakers. If Oprah says it, it can’t be racist!”

I could not agree more. Especially with the comment provided by Merq,

"Like Carmen said, people as a whole, want material goods (and sex) because that’s what we’ve got thrust in our faces 24/7. But labels are different for different people. Sarah Jessica Parker inspired a segment of women to spend more than half their paychecks on ludicrously overpriced Jimmy Choo sandals, because of some tired “city girl and her shoe closet” cliche. Yet, Heaven forbid the “inner-city” teen even looks at a $200 pair of shoes the wrong way.
That’s another pair of conflicting labels for you: “decadent” vs. “hood rich.” "

I wanted to post this seperately if its okay.

When I heard her say that I was thinking the same thing. I love what she did for the Africans and how she took that stand. But she and Cosby really need to put things into the proper perspective instead of reiterating hypocritical white racist sentiments against AAs.

"But she and Cosby really need to put things into the proper perspective instead of reiterating hypocritical white racist sentiments against AAs."

There was noting hyprocritical about what either said. They gave their opinion based on their personal experiences. It has nothing to do with white people or what white people think. Why is it that when a black person says something that may be construed as being unflattering or critical about other black people, suddenly white be are responsible for their thinking and beliefs? Both gave their opinions and there is much evidence to support what both said. White people are irrelevant to the issue.

There are two sides to every story. And while I understand that living in poverty-stricken areas must be incredibly difficult, there still remains an element of choice regarding how one chooses to live their life. That is the other side of the story that, in my opinion, Oprah is speaking about. Oprah came from an extremely humble backround and has made it to where she is because she has worked her a$$ off, and, along the way, I'm sure she wanted "things" too. Most children nowadays, regardless of social class, do not understand the value of hard work. Her comment is truthful, and it's no different than what author Charles Sykes, a white man, wrote about American children in his book 'Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can't Read, Write, Or Add'.

Parents who disagree, and childless critics, need to stop complaining and change the course of their childrens lives as well as the world around them. Because, regarding education, Oprah puts her money where her mouth is. That, at least, I can respect.

A minority NYC charter school principal was on Hannity and Colmes last night. He said that in order to judge the effectiveness of American public schools you should consider the trajectory of the non-English speaking immigrant child who comes here. He said that by the 10th grade the foreign student often outperforms the American most tellingly in English class. He agreed with what Oprah said as do I. I think he is qualified to speak on the matter and I think people need to start being more honest rather than politically correct, especially on this issue.

Dahomeyahosi:

That charter school principle is a damned lie. Change that. He's a GOD damned lie and his mother is a 2 dollar whore and he is saying that because he wants charter schools to take over and to take all that money so he can ignore and not educate the students.

Did you know that charter school teachers do not have to be certified or even degreed? Did you know that charter schools do not have to test so we don't know how they are doing? Did you know that they have turned out to be a disaster almost everywhere they have been tried?

Did you know that they are run FOR profit? Did you know they only set them up in minority areas and not in areas where WHITES are underperforming.

But of course you are on the internet, so you are the typical self loathing black person, who practically CREAMS when he or she can read something bad about black folks.

When the Jews and Italians first got here at the turn of the century they thought they were all retarded and would never learn.

They were wrong, weren't they?

Oh and about the foreign student that comes here--do they let in the retards? Do they let in the diseased and the handicapped? Do they let in the sub performing underachievers?

Why can't we understand that those people are not even let IN here. The dumb rice farmers are left behind and do not show up in the schools where they would destroy the myth of this miracle minority.

The awful thing is that you self loathers are supposed to be the best of what the race has created.

Man, I tell you. I used to be puzzled by the lack of enthusiasm a lot of older blacks showed when they were told more blacks were going to college.

They knew it was pointless to give a degree to an invertebrate.

Chrishayden, I agree with your point that they let in mostly middle and upper-class foreign students. They would have to be able to afford the tuition fees and living expenses after all. Also, I have noticed that the media in general tends not to report on the unsuccessful immigrants, belive me I have perused many a U.S. websites and have noticed this. I believe that one of the reasons there is ongoing controversy in the United States in regards to Mexican illegal immigrants is precisely that they are not the 'better' choice of immigrant and are seen as burdonsome on society. Plus they ain't white. Hence the vitriol shown towards them in many cases. It appears to be a combination of class, race, and economics that contribute to the controversy. It is a very complex issue to say the least.

Not much vitriol is being shown if 20 million of them were allowed to come over the border like skipping jump rope or maybe do you think they purposely let them come here to combat us? CAN SOMEBODY ANSWER THAT? They dont hate Mexican immigrants they just annoyed is all.

"Oprah got where she is because she knows how sick some white folks are....."

Moonsigns:
That's not true. Because, if that were the case, that would mean any, and all, work a black individual does to achieve personal and collective success is, and will always be, for the approval and acceptance of white people -- and I'm sure you'd disagree with that. Therefore, stop trying to project your insecurities on her. When you, a childless critic (I'm sure), begin to share your time and the money earned from the sale of your book, then I'll (maybe) consider your opinion of those who ARE working to change the world, a little more respectable.

Yes, and the children in our "inner-city" schools are just one group of American children. And because Oprah owns property in a major U.S. city, works in a major U.S. city, and has donated much of her time and money to "inner-city" children, I think she has every right to share her opinion regarding her experience(s).

Enchanted, I am commenting on the coverage in the American News media. I am not American, so I do-not have any first hand experience with the day to day realities of living with these issues. From what you said 'if there are 20 million of them were allowed to come over the border like skipping jump rope or maybe do you think they purposely let them come here to combat us?'. I don't know as I didn't realize they had such porous borders to the extent that 20 million could enter illegally. I am referring soley to the impression that I've garnered from media reports. I do however get the impression of hatred and fear however covert or, in some cases overt in regards to this issue. I also have the sneaking impression that yes, they have usurped African-Americans as the largest minorities in the States and as a result, will, in the future, be able to wield more political power. I also get the impression that initially, they were let in to do the jobs no-one else 'wanted', below minimum wages. However, the children being born here, will be the ones exerting any political will. When this happens, watch out. From reading this and other boards, I get the distinct impression that they dislike Black people or in the least, are indifferent to them. With this being said I would be remiss to even claim to know much about this subject to a great extent. I reiterate, this is the impression I get from the media, not all of course, because you are obviously going to get dissenting views on the subject. This is why I come to this board, I wish to learn from a more personal perspective, to hopefully become more knowledgable on different subjects in order to grasp the 'bigger picture' so to speak. The whites are obviously afraid that the illegal immigrants children will compete for high paying jobs and political positions in the future, they are starting to realize this hence the backlash against the ilegal immigrants. It is not so much the illegal immigrants who are worrying to the extent that their American born children and grand-children are. Regards.

How many of us have ever worked/ volunteered in U.S. inner city school systems? Just curious... cause if you are mad as HELL, as you SHOULD be, you'd at least want to know what the F*CK is REALLY goin on... If you haven't done so already... you're in for the SHOCK of your LIVES!

Moonsigns, who doesn't think of Blacks and Hispanics when the term "inner-city" is raised? Get real? That one group of American children she referred to are Black children. Bill Gates does way more for black American children than Oprah could ever dream of. He owns property in major cities. What do you think would happen if Bill were to single out black school children for this kind of criticism... saying they're not worthy of his charity like other black children?

Oprah should get a pass because...???

Because Gates is white and male, naturally, he'd be considered a racist. However, because Oprah isn't white and male, the rules ARE different --and we both know this. Don't play games.

"What do you think would happen if Bill were to single out black school children for this kind of criticism... saying they're not worthy of his charity like other black children?'

"Oprah should get a pass because...???"

It's very simple. Bill is white and Oprah is black. It would not matter if it were true or not, because Gates is white, black people and white liberals would not allow him to say anything negative about black children regardless if the criticism was well document and irrefutable. The double standard will not allow such behavior to happen. And Oprah is not exactly getting a free pass, (although I personally agree with her) it's just more tolerable because and only because, she is black.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Oprah donates just as many millions to youth charities and scholarships through UNCF.

Ntfs:

So bro Chris, I guess that means you're not pro charter school....?????? Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! And what are the educational alternatives for inner city Negroes?

The inner city negroes, unfortunately, are doomed to unemployment, the corner and jail and everybody knows it and everybody will just blame them for it rather than realize that that is what awaits them.

Do you have any jobs or anything for them? No. Do I? No. Does anybody? No.

Cities are created when there is some economic activity. People come there to take advantage of them. The economic activities have flown the coop never to return.

The rich and those who are employed by them and those who provide goods and services for them will prosper. The inner cities will serve as a dumping ground, repository for surplus population and area for black market and illegal activity--as they always have.

Everybody acts like they are concerned, but Negroes are just embarassed around their white friends because the blacks in the ghetto "can't get it together" and "they are bringing us down".

Negroes want to act as though they , and not racism, is the cause for their woe.

These people are doomed. Everybody knows it and it is fine with them.

The American way. blame the victim. The Indian. The raped woman. The inner city dweller. The Mexican. The poor white.

Chris,

Don't go getting me started about Oprah's sexual pecadillos. Hahahahaha!!!

Chris: "The inner cities will serve as a dumping ground, repository for surplus population and area for black market and illegal activity--"

Of which those "The rich and those who are employed by them and those who provide goods and services for them will prosper." foks you mention will enjoy partaking of when such is to their liking.

Chris: "Everybody acts like they are concerned, but Negroes are just embarassed around their white friends because the blacks in the ghetto "can't get it together" and "they are bringing us down"."

Yep. To a LARGE extent this is what we're doing.

Tonya,

Yep. SAME thing Cosby did, though much worse, actually.

Because while Oprah appear exasperated, Cosby appear hateful.

ABM,

Instead of doing what Charlie Rangel did--admit that prominent blacks are under pressure to remain racially neutral in this country--Oprah went ahead and blamed poor black children. And that’s what makes it stink so badly.... She chose to blame her dilemma on the weak.

ABM,

Sorry about that, I had to edit.

Your 04:57 pm post was in response to my 04:58 one.

ABM SAID: "Yep. SAME thing Cosby did, though much worse, actually.

Totally agree.

Tonya,

Foks like Cosby and Oprah may (I say "may" because I'd prefer to think better of them.) think they're doing some noble thing via lambasting poor Black foks. But what they're doing is emboldening foks who always have and alway will loathe and conspire against Blacks.

ABM,

As the old saying goes: it's not what you say, it's how you say it.

I love Cosby to death too, and I agree; these things need to be said. But from the beginning I felt that Cosby was NOT the person to say it…. He doesn’t know how to …and neither does Oprah.

Chris,

"The inner city negroes, unfortunately, are doomed to unemployment.....The American way. blame the victim. The Indian. The raped woman. The inner city dweller. The Mexican. The poor white."

Even the staunchest WHITE conservatives and economists are now starting to admit that. A lot of what Oprah implied is just flat out ignorance.

The more people voice their expectations and disappointments with Oprah, the more they energize her image as a savior who is looked to as someone empowered to save black children in America. Seek salvation elsewhere, folks. Especially since Oprah has become so narcisstic that she only wants to help children who look and act like her. She said something to the effect that she sees herself in all of the girls she selected to go to her school because they all had the "it" factor and were ambitions and smart, and that by helping them she will play a part in changing the world. That's the gospel according to Oprah. Suffer little African children, come unto her and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of Oprah. Look for a messiah for black American children among the ruminating ranks of those who criticize Bill Cosby and Juan Williams. Hope you don't get tired of waiting.

Well, I don't think she's blaming poor black kids more so pointing out an ugly truth really. I mean, think about it. Poor blacks say they care about education - if so why are our drop out rates higher than other ethnic groups? Poor blacks claim to care about teenage pregnancy - if so why are our girls getting pregnant at higher rates than other ethnic groups? What about the rate of aids in the community...incarceration of black males...black on black crime? What some of us say with our lips is just bullshit and until we lower our numbers is those areas, nothing will change.

I am soooo sick of parents claiming they care about their kids education, when all they do literally is dress them and send them out the damn door every day. No reading in the house, no books, hell, I've even been over people's houses (with children) where they can't even find a damn pen or pencil to write with. Most inner city parents are so hip hopped out and too busy trying to be cool it's pathetic.

I don't think education is the answer for many poor black. I say it's psychology. If a large number of people drop out of school consistently, their telling you they don't give a damn about education, so how the hell are you supposed to teach them? The saying goes that "blacks love their chaing". I think therapy is the only way to break the cycle because it's beyond education - mental.

Peace

Oh yeah, what about helping young boys? I've never heard of Oprah doing anything for black boys and men. That really stands out and I'm surprised no one has questioned her about that. I mean dayum! Brothers are the other part of the union.

She gave ONE MILLION to Morehouse College which is a "black all mens" college and that was all over the news. What about all the black guys that won her Scholarship on the Oprah Show?

Thanks Enchanted. I just don't hear much of what she does for men. And really, she almost never has men on her show.

Tonya:
"....Are you saying Blacks are monolithic...."

Moonsigns:
Suggesting that Oprah's and Bill's gender, and color, play an extremely vital role in this situation is not, at all, an implication that I regard the black community as being monolithic --but you already know that! Like I wrote earlier, don't play games.

Chrishayden:
"What the f*ck do you even know about anything?.......Blah......Blah.....Blah ..Blah....."

Moonsigns:
Ahh, yes. I hit a nerve. I knew you wouldn't like my response. And, as usual, when your opinion is challenged, you have nothing constructive to write, and your only rebuttal is that my thought pattern is the product of racist arrogance.

Blah.
Blah.
Blah.
Blah.

Chrishayden I don't know you well enough to assume you're being sarcastic but I'm going to make that assumption anyway because it seems like the most sane assumption to make.
