New York, Jan 1 (ANI): Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has hit out at people who have criticised her decision to build a 40 million dollar school complex in South Africa, saying that unlike kids in America, children in the African nation yearn to learn.
In an interview with Newsweek, Winfrey revealed that she had been "frustrated" by the way American inner-circle kids did not appreciate the value of a free education, and thought the money would be better spent on kids who had a burning desire to learn, but did not have the means.
"I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn't there," the New York Daily News quoted her, as telling the publication.
"If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school," she added.
Oprah's said that though she understood that many Americans feel as if she's going "overboard" in funding the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, those are feelings she can live with.
"I understand that many ...feel that I'm going overboard, and that's fine. This is what I want to do".
The talk show queen, who has given millions of dollars over the years to educate impoverished kids in the US through the Oprah Winfrey Scholars program, has handpicked 152 girls out of 3,500 applicants to attend the school.
All the girls, Winfrey says, have that "it" factor that will help them make a difference in the future.
"I wanted to take girls with that 'it' quality and give them an opportunity to make a difference in the world," Oprah said.

Someone should tell Oprah that if South Africans are so dayam concerned about education, they wouldn't have to rely upon the largesse of foreigners to educate their children.
Someone should also tell Oprah since she herself has NOT attempted to raise and educate kids she probably don't know what the fuhk she's talking about. |

It isn't to me. It's a fairly typical mindset of of MANY wealthy people. Especially fantasyland types (see Jolie, Madonna preferring to adopt AFRICAN, not AFRICAN AMERICAN, children).
This (along with Cosby's recent rantings) is just another example rich foks pissing on poor Black foks. |

Oprah needs a few more: "Light Bulb Moments!" She’s extremely ignorant and doesn't even know it. I’m sure she looks like a damn fool to truly intelligent people. A smarter woman would have a couple of friends who aren't afraid to pull her coattail to this, instead of just riding it. |

Obviously, the reason Oprah is giving money to black South African children is because their government isn't concerned with their education. And I can understand her frustration with the bling-bling materialistic mind set of the inner city children. Just because children are poor doesn't automatically entitle them to be recipients of the generosity of rich folks seeking to improve their lives. Wealthy private citizens, however, are entitled to require that they invest their money in youngsters who show potential. They have the right to reward ambition whether those who do nothing but sulk around and bitch like it or not. |

I repeat: how obvious can it be that Oprah has chosen to take up the slack of the negligent South African govenment when it come to educating black children. And according to the article, she does give millions of dollars to her Oprah Winfrey Scholarship program for impoverished children her in America. Defending Oprah is a new role for me, but I think she deserves some lee-way on this issue. |

Oprah does a lot for African American children especially the poor. She's spent hundreds of millions on AA kids and given a million to Morehouse COllege and what about the 2 million she gave the United Negro College Fund? She has been giving to AA kids for two decades so I dont mind her helping those kids in Africa and they are more interested in education than U.S. kids because if you ever visit Africa and want to be instantly popular and protected by the natives just take number 2 pencils and note pads those kids crave education over there.

Hmmmmmm.......Interesting thread. But why should she bother to donate or give anything? Black folks are going to dog her and run her down anyway. It's doesnt matter what she does or doesn't do. I'd recommend she give a huge yearly donation to the Red Cross, Hospice and Human Rights Watch and call it it a day. Done deal.

Then why aren't these ghetto parents influenced by all of those shows Oprah runs with experts who give advice on how to motivate and discipline your children? As I say, I'm not really passionate about defending Oprah but sometimes people have a knee-jerk reaction to her, just because she's Oprah. |

Oprahs still angry at AA for not supporting BELOVED. She has never gotten over that because she said it on her tv show that the movie was her "baby" she gave birth to and that the public rejected her "baby". She said that on national t.v.

I agree 100% with what Oprah said and I think she said it in comparison to the non-American children she knows. I am a lecturer at an American university, far from an inner city school, and the desire to learn is largely absent. There is a professor who also teaches in the public schools and he has told stories that reiterate what Oprah is saying 100 fold. Education is truly cherished and appreciated elsewhere.
As for relying on the largesse of foreigners I don't think that segregation era black Americans would have turned down foreign dollars. Many American public schools are relying on benefactors like Bill Gates. Black South Africans' financial situations are much worse than segregation era black Americans' problems. I can't image how you could say this with that in mind. |

Oprah Doprah talks out of both sides of her neck. I've said it before and I'll say it some more. I commend her philanthropy.
But - on the one hand she consistently promotes useless products, and then she turns around and persecutes the little people for living beyond their means.
I like nice things, I like to be comfortable and I like to eat good food, but I'm not a materialistic person. The only friggen reason I even own a computer is because I need it in order to run my eBay business and the other income generating things I have going on online - other than that I'm not a gadgets freak at all. I could list the electronic devices here in my home on two hands - and that would include my washer and dryer.
But the materialistic uberconsumer Oprah Doprah takes her BlackBerry with her to the toilet, you know because she has to stay connected while she's taking a dump. And that's fine, except that she promotes this mentality upon the masses, over whom she has much too much influence. And she's wrong.
I hate the BITCH! She's a fucking phoney. And I won't be blinded by her riches. Nope - not I!!!

I guess I'm one of the FEW foks who loved Oprah's Beloved. I appreciate her attempting to stay as true to Morrison's book as possible. But if you didn't read the book or didn't really follow and appreciate it, you probably would struggle with the movie.
I think as time goes on, the esteem and appreciation for the movie will grow.

Oprah herself dropped out of college (and was later given a communications degree from Tennesee State University, after a few million bucks added to their endowment I'm sure). So she's HARDLY the one to wax-on about who do/don't value education.
African Americans do NOT understand and appreciate the value of education as much as they should. That is largely manifest in our condition and position in the world. The very SAME can be said about much (if not MOST) of Africa.
And it's time for ALL Black foks - American, African, Carribean, European, Polynesian, etc. - to STOP making excuses for our ignorance. |

African Americans do NOT understand and appreciate the value of education as much as they should.
If this is true, then we are only being true Americans because this is a complaint you will hear at every level about students here in the USA. There is a huge wave of anti-intellectualism sweeping the country: folks wearing ignorance as if it is some sort of badge of honor. (Starting with our nation's leader.)
There are many, many folks fighting this trend, though. Hopefully the cool-factor of stupidity will wane soon. That'd be a good hope for 2007! |

Abm I will admit that most Africans do not value education when it comes to their female children and that is a huge hurdle we have to overcome but we place an immense value on education for our sons. You must remember that education is not free in the overwhelming majority of African countries so when I say we value it I mean both theoretically and in practice. I would not compare Americans and Africans in the least in this regard. African families make huge sacrifices to send their children to school and African children know better than to squander the opportunity. |

I was mobbed by children everywhere I went as well for pencils! They have to pay to attend school and most families cannot afford it so they cannot read and write and they want to so badly they will pass up watching tv in the clinic or going to a dance if they can go to school. They are not like AA kids they really are interested in education and will walk miles I saw this in seven differnt countries Oprah is not lying.

Well, Mzuri, as I say I am not a big Oprah fan but a lot of the complaints about her beg the question, and the bottom line is that if anti-intellectualism currently prevails in this country, then Oprah should be able to complain about this just like everybody else who laments the situation. And it ain't Oprah's fault if parents aren't motivating their children or the government ain't doing a better job in the area of education. Oprah seems to evoke emotional responses rather than plausible ones. I jump on the anti-Oprah band wagon when she starts pontificating or catering to her white audiences but IMO she's on point in this case. |

Enchanted you are absolutely right. I think a major cultural difference between Afrians and Americans is that most Africans see every child as a blessing or a necessity. Families do not think of children as financial burdens and therefore do not plan for them financially. Unfortunately that means there is a huge disconnect between what parents should be able to do and what they are able to do. I disagree with my parents and extended family on this but they will never come around to my way of thinking. So it looks like those pencils will continue to be scarce along with a lot of other things. |

Oprah's money is Oprah's money. Government money is TAX payer's money. If you got a problem with the educational system take it up with your legislative branches.
American children DO have their priorities F*cked up. Is this such a surprise? is she NOT stating the obvious? I'm glad she is calling a spade a spade. Perhaps it will motivate complacent, bougie black folks to get off their asses and DO something about the situtaion.
Oprah IS fake for good reason. If she weren't fake, she wouldn't be giving BLACK LITTLE GIRLS and a few 'coloreds' (South African or NOT) a CHANCE!!!!
I've worked with American black children in the inner city, District 5, NYC to be exact. There are a FEW who want to do well. MOST of them will go as far as is expected of them. If the parents and adults around them have f*cked up priorities, so shall their children. Our children are victims and the oppressors wear suits, the oppressors are often Mommy and Daddy. The oppressors are those who chose to turn a blind eye, sending our kids to charter schools instead...the oppressors are US! |

Oprah can do whatever she wants with her money. But it's incredible arrogant and stupid of her to suggest there are NO American public schools that are worthy of her charity. I think Oprah's reached that point where her power, influence and resources have begun to outstrip her savvy and intellect. Evidence of such manifested in her handling of that James Frey fraudulent book fiasco. |

Is overcoming obesity (losing weight) much harder than overcoming being black & poor? Maybe this is a question for a new thread but Oprah has got me wondering. She's obviously much more sensitive to the plight of obese people than she is to that of the poor. I can't imagine her bashing fat people the way she has chosen to bash the poor (not in a million years!). So I wonder: Is it much harder to overcome obesity than it is to overcome being black & poor? |

I don't know about overcoming obesity or poverty because I've experienced neither, but we'll always be Black. Do you have to be poor because you're Black? Not necessarily. Poverty is a vicious cycle that affects people regardless of their race.
As to who Oprah is more sensitive to, to be honest, I don't think she's sensitive to anyone. She has forgotten what it's like to live in poverty and she's forgotten what it's like to be fat. And she forgot her ass was Black a long time ago. |

Toubobie I think you hit the nail on the head. Oprah is free to use her money however she wishes. I just happen to agree 100% with the reasons behind her choice. And I get to work with some of those NYC kids after they graduate from high school. I have a hard time understanding how some of them graduated! |

I just irkes me what a complete hypocrite Oprah is.
I find it sad that she does not take it upon herself to ask the question of why the inner city kids do not value and education, instead of flinging money at them in hopes of things to change.
In the end, its her money, and a child is a child is a child. I'm happy for those children. However, I feel pity for the inner city kids, often misabled, and simply categorized into misfits unworthy of education, children who have never been exposed in the first place to what they can become, in who many of them do not believe it is possible.
Thank Oprah. I'm sure inner city children will thank her for deeming them worthless.

This thread, like the others about Oprah, simply amaze me. The carping, name calling and angst directed at her is ridiculous. I know I am the only person on this board who will not partake in the rock throwing and Oprah effigy burning and I'm willing to take the heat for that. And I'm not even an Oprahette nor do I watch her silly show or read her recommended books!
I have no problems with honest criticism of her or anyone else. But the blistering condemnations, name calling and criticism of this black woman is over the top and excessive - IMO. I've read all the toxic accusations and I've heard all the arguments as to why she is a pariah. Can't get with it. That's it. I'm done. Just my two cents.....

I watched what I guess was a re-run of a show Orpah did on how much class matters in America and I had a recurrence of Oprahitis. When she was told by the guest "expert" that hard work doesn't always guarantee success and that luck plays a role in making it big, she insisted that luck had nothing to do with her being where she was. If luck didn't play a great role in elevating this ordinary woman to where she is, I don't know what did. There are so many other black women who have more going from them than "O" does who haven't made it to the top because the randomness factor didn't work in their favor. Oprah is really full of herself and the school bearing her name that she built in South Africa is a monument to herself, and she probably located it there because it will gain more world-wide attention and stand out more in that country than it would here where such endowed edifices are a dime a dozen. Sorry, NTFS. LOL. |

I agree with your last post Cynique about Oprah and "luck" you are 100% right there are more talented sisters but I still say Oprahs comments are not that serious she should do with her money what she want to and its not like she hasn't done for American poor before shes done a lot.

Ms. Cynique, Your point is well made and I agree with what your wrote. However, the vitriolic ranting and demonizing of this woman just drones on and on and on and on..... I just can't get with it. It's too excessive and in some circumstances, unwarranted. And as I have maintained throughout my posts concerning her, I'm not opposed to honest criticism of this woman nor am I her PR consultant. But I just feel that the relentless trashing of this woman is somewhat excessive. Once again, IMO.
