Went to a beauty store with my eldest daughter the other day. Admittedly, I haven't been such a place since last I recall (My wife doesn't shop in such places).

It was frightening experience!

The walls and aisles were stocked with EVERY style, shape and color oF wig, hair piece and extension known to man & God. Honestly. I thought those hideous things were going to come alive, hop on top of my head and start sucking the lifeforce out of me or something.

And *sigh* all the customers were Black women (along a few brotha who appeared to be, like myself, dragged into the joint by sistas). And the operators and (presumably) owner were Korean.

There was the Korean guy monitoring every move we made in the store. Fuhker! That's the kinda sh*t that brings the hood out of a brotha.

But what really fuhked me up was when as my daughter was at the checkout counter, I notice a large flat screen monitor facing the clerk. On that screen were SIXTEEN square images of EVERY section of the store. I mean, it look like some kinda sh*t you'd see in a maximum security PRISON or something.

After my daughter completed her purchase, I directed her attention to the screen, explained to her what it does and represent - These Korean mofos who are getting RICH off of Black foks money think you ignant nikkas are here to steal everything dayamthing they've got!!! - and declared that was the very LAST time she was ever to shop at that store or any other like it.

You act like you're just now finding this out, ABM. It's BEEN like that and will ALWAYS be like that.

BTW, where I live, they're not the Koreans but the Vietnamese.

Americansista,

Like I said, I don't go in beauty shops. And I have NEVER been in a store that had a giant screen that included SIXTEEN images of every section of the store. And I never would KNOWINGLY shop in such a place.

To be honest, I don't really know what nationality those fok are. I just assume their Korean because I've read Koreans have cornered the market on supplying straighten hair pieces to Black women.

As a consumer, there's a little thing that you can do known as ABANDONING YOUR PURCHASE. In other words, if the store, clerk, owner or another customer pisses you off either while you are shopping or while you are up at the cash register about to tender your funds, you can simply turn around and leave the premises - leaving all their useless items behind for someone else to place back upon the shelves - and taking YOUR MONEY with you. You are under no legal obligation to pay for anything in a store that you haven't yet used or consumed.

Another form of protest that works for me is to return the unused merchandise and request a refund.

Once they have your money, they don't really give a shit if you never come back. Because another sucker is just going to take your place anyway. Hitting them in the pocket by not spending your money, tends to make them see the error of their ways. Especially if done en masse.

It hasn't always been like that. Up until the 70's it was blacks selling this bushwah to other blacks.

Don't buy the crap. Stay out of there and wear your hair natural.

I won't hold my breath. Negroes want to be white too bad.

Nothing will happen to these stores so long as so many Black women are addicted to these products like crack. To me, it does not matter who owns them: In communities where you are lucky to find one public library, legitimate banking institution, or full service grocery store, you will find at least a half dozen of these stores with--as ABM illustrated so well--row upon row of the scary hair.

I spend 10-15 bucks at the drug store every two months for all the products I and my two daughters need. Until lots of Black women feel similarly about their hair products, these stores will continue to flourish.

Yvettep,

A couple years ago, I did some research and uncovered that Black American women spend nearly 6X the percentage of their discretionary income on beauty-related products and services than non-Black American women do. And, of course, a HUGE portion of such is hair-related.

So, although it would appear to be an extreme description, "addicted" is an appropriate way to describe what's going down.

If black women didn't feel the NEED to wear it, they wouldn't buy it...

...that simple.

I fault our culture more than all others for promoting this kind of hate.

It is the older black women that kill me the most when I see them wearing weaves and other NASTY FILTHY FUNKY DUSTY hair do's... cuz they should know better! ..As grown women they should know the shit's DINGY & NASTY!

How many black men would pursue these owmen Abm if they didnt try to look like other race of women? That is a huge part of the problem I am used to you mentioning in previous posts. I cannot talk because I wear very expensive weaves and spend a fortune on my head so I am the culprit you all hate. I dont enjoy the reaction wearing my natural hair.

I think part of the problem is that black women don't have any authentic role models in the media to look up to. We'd rather embrace the house negro types. Look at who many of us consider the best looking females in the game. It's usually the entertainers who don't look very black at all. We can't blame all of this on whites. We perpetuate this as well. It's been over 300 years and we still keep it going, (light skin vs dark skin)

I think some research needs to be done on why black folks continue to support businesses that abuse them yet they wont support thier own claiming "prices are too high" or some type of complaint. I dont think there are but a hand full of black hair care stores left..just like black book stores.

I agree Enchanted. What do you say when you have Black men who insist that Black women put weaves in there hair and insist that there women look as white as possible? What do you say when you have Black men who sit around and reduce Black women to skin color and hair texture? What do say to Black mothers who chastise their daughters for there hair being "too nappy"?

What do you say to these Black men who you see "running around" with non-black women? Do you know what that does to the psyche of a Black woman to know that the men of your own race don't consider you "good enough" or don't even consider you "women"? Like Kola said the only reason why these Black girls are in "white girl" or "Spanish girl" drag is because Black men don't accept them as Black.

What do you say to B.E.T and other Black media institutions only hold up the white and light-skinned women as the standard of beauty? And feed our little black girls the message that if they are not light-skinned or mixed than they should not even be considered women. What do you say to these Black mothers(Enchanted) that insist that there sons only date/marry light-skinned or mixed women so they can have them some "pretty grandbabbies".

The whole situation is fucked!!But we are doing it to ourselves.

Serena and Enchanted:

I know men can be hair freaks (they say Japanese men are even worse, often putting the hair of their lovers in their mouths and sucking on it during sex--try that with a weave or a perm) but this is wrong. In the end you don't get with somebody for their hair--

If you got a man who has to have that kind of hair drop him--what will he do if it falls out?

I tell you, it is heartbreaking to see our women getting old and going bald because of all the torturous things they have done to their hair in their youth.

Oh blah blah blah. "Vanity thy name is woman". If black women want to look like everyone else does, then let 'em do so. If the alternative offered any incentives, then things would've changed by now. And it's not like this is something peculiar to black females. The artifices of what make a woman "hot" are snatched up by women of all ethnicities. At least sistas ain't spending as fortune on plastic surgery. Koreans saw a good thing and took advasntage of it. Black folks should've beat them to the draw and made them some money and monitored them some shop-lifters. OK chrishayden, it's all yours. LMAO.

AS - When you see images that you like, you save them to your hard drive. You do this by placing your mouse arrow over it, and right clicking your mouse so that the little menu box pops up. At this menu you choose "save image." You should set up a separate folder just for these images so that you can find them easier. Otherwise you need to remember where they are saved so that you can retrieve them. While you are in this step of saving, you can also re-name the image whatever you want.

Okay.

the only difference is the store in my neighborhood has jsut as many natural wigs as it does straight hair wigs.....i think that natural styles are very popular here in houston (so it depends on where you are)

Misty,

you're right. The Asians at the Beauty Supplies in my area do not except any refunds, so I don't even see the point in them giving their customers a receipt. You can't return shit. Even if you decide to get a refund before you walk out of the store, they will NOT let you get your cash back under any circumstances.

ABM the important thing is that your daughter learned the lesson you were trying to teach her. I shop at a store like that (in terms of the products)...only it is missing the surveillance and the owners are Ethiopians rather than Koreans.

"If black women didn't feel the NEED to wear it, they wouldn't buy it...

...that simple.

I fault our culture more than all others for promoting this kind of hate.

It is the older black women that kill me the most when I see them wearing weaves and other NASTY FILTHY FUNKY DUSTY hair do's... cuz they should know better! ..As grown women they should know the shit's DINGY & NASTY!"

well theres nothign wrong with wearing a wig...to tell the truth i have a wig that I wear sometimes....and its not because i dont have any hair...in fact i have way more hair than the wig i wear..... i jsut use it for when im lazy and dont feel liek doing my hair or for when im having a bad hair day...and also for days when i have to go out but my hair is wet and drying so that it can curl. There's absoluely nothign wrong with wearing a wig......i got one that resembles the texture of my own hair alot and people actually think its real because it's fixed in a "natural" style.

right Brownbeauty and sometimes they even hold the dollars under the light when you buy things to make sure the money isnt counterfiet. I remember they were HORRIBLE about doing that when the store first opened.....now i havent seen too much more of that. But i havent been back there in a while partly because i do my own hair now....they have a beauty shop right in the store.

anyway, i have to ask.....what choice do we really have....there are hardly no black owned stores in the community...and then when you go to many of them the black people ALSO have terrible attitudes or either they just dont ahve it togather and slack off on running the store the way it should be ran....or either they are out of things and dont ahve what you want

enchanted wrote--

"How many black men would pursue these owmen Abm if they didnt try to look like other race of women? That is a huge part of the problem I am used to you mentioning in previous posts. I cannot talk because I wear very expensive weaves and spend a fortune on my head so I am the culprit you all hate. I dont enjoy the reaction wearing my natural hair. "

Enchanted, I just feel that if black women had more confidence in themselves people would be FORCED to accept our beauty.......nothing is going to change when you have people like beyonce immitating white women...the cycle will continue....like anything its about having willpower and knowing that you are beautiful regardless of what this racist country we live in tells you.

i know that mens opinion has a huge impact on how women view themselves and handle themselves...i do realize that.....but we should have enough confidence and smarts to validate our OWN image. Men are often like a herd of sheep....they will follow anything as long as its in..,..so if black women made it "in" to look black then people would be forced to recognize us for who we are.

but when people see you mimicing other races to them it just confirms that you are ugly and worth less than the races that you're trying so hard ot mimic. It goes back to that saying "if you dont toot your own horn then no one else will". So there is only so much we can blame on society...we have to be stronger.

Misty,

you made an excellent point.

There are also lots of Black women who have been pretenseful to their spouses by misleading them into believing that the extensions they wear is actually their own. One black woman would go through great lengths so that her husband would never see how coarse and kinky her real hair was, by continuing to add glued extensions to her scalp which left her bald in areas.

Why are black women even still humiliating themselves by wearing this horsehair Asian hair fake hair shit? And who cares if some of the wigs and weaves now resemble "natural hair". How about growing our OWN natural hair? This hair shit is sooooooooo ridiculous. If black women saved the money they spend on fake hair and applied it to a downpayment on property, we'd be doing so much better.

What the fuck must those Asian creatures who run the fake hair stores think of us (not that I really care)? They must be laughing their ASSES off as black women race in there to spend their hard earned dough on Asian-looking fake hair. Man, we make such fools of ourselves.

Lolita - Anyone who trashes my reindeer gif while it's still Christmastime can kissmyblackityblackass. Because you have got to be one fucked up individual to say something mean when someone is trying to be cheerful and nice.

How can you hate on my reindeer???

What sort of a psycho bitch are you?

FYI - I am a VERY happy person and I try to keep my posts positive. And I try hard to be nice to other people. I really do.

But I'm the same way here on this forum as I am in real life. I'm nice to people until they rub me the wrong way.

You've been hateful and negative ever since you got here. Starting shit with people you know absolutely nothing about.

Normal people coming to a forum try to fit in, not start crap and insult people for no damn reason, spamming the forum with useless nonsense and starting threads every time they have a brainfart.

Something is hopelessly wrong with you. To me, you're just another pathetic sick attention starved bitch.

And BTW, this isn't the LOLA forum. If you need a forum that's all about you, you should contact a forum service provider and hosting service. I'm sure you'll establish some sort of following in about 10-15 years. Tramp!

Tonya,

I've seen some YOUNG chicks with some pretty DINGY-looking shyt in their hair too.

Enchanted,

Funny how many Black women will often claim to want to look good for THEMSELVES yet when they do something to themselves that incite some critism they blame it on brothas.

LiLi,

There's basically no such thing as Black community and Black fidelity. Because if there were such, Black people could pool their resources together to be able to compete against the Koreans.

Misty,

I don't recall seeing many - if ANY - naturally-Black styled Black wigs and hair pieces in the beauty store.

Dahomeyahosi,

You mean the Ethiopian merchants DON'T think their CUSTOMERS come into their store to shoplift them into bankruptcy?

Imagine THAT!

BB123,

I've heard of Black women who've been married for 20 years who've never let their husbands see their FACES without make-up.

You chicks are crazy!

Abm you know damned well that women dont do anything just for themselves and you know full well that the only reason black women want to look non-black is because black men constantly praise, chase and marry non black women. You usually keep it real so be fair. White women do not get lip injections and breast implants just because its for themselves. Black teens are not starving themselves and vomiting just because they like to treat themselves my brother.

Enchanted,

It's entirely possible that Black women want as much to style their hair like White women as Black men desire them to (if not more so).

Sure the thoughts and desires of men influence what women do (as do those women affect men). But you sistas need to take some credit for and ownership of your own shyt, just as we brothas should of ours.

I agree Abm so teach your daughters not to EVER look to "males" for their self image. When I stopped doing that my confidence shot up and more men became attracted to me because I was confident and did not care what they wanted or thought. However for black girls there is no place for them in the culture so its slim luck no matter how good they look or how much confidence they will be hated for being confident. LOL.

Abm, thats no different than black men who blame black women for becoming thugs claiming that if the women didnt want thugs they would have never turned out that way. If a woman wants a thug, that doesnt mean you have to conform to being that way...men do have a choice.....while i admit that the opposite sex has a huge influence on what we as human do....there is no way in hell we can put most of the blame on someone else for what we do as individuals....WE have the most control over our own actions.

Abm your right thats why I dont agree with all these black women putting their loyalty into black men. Men are men and life is life. If more black women will begin to see it that way and give up "race" then they will be happier and have more opportunities. Clinging to black men is what drags them down.

Weaved-out, permed, twists, natural, straight, long, short, braided, locs, worn in an afro --I don't care what black women do with their hair, as long as it is taken care of and clean.

No matter how much this shyt is discussed, shyt is never going to change --women are going to do what the phuck they want to do.

Typical rhetoric from a racist, condescending, white woman like you Moonsigns. "I don't care how bad Black women mutilate themselves as long as it doesn't affect my social position at the top". Let's be real Moonsigns the only reason your husband ended up with you anyways is because Black women in their "natural state" weren't good enough. And your husband sees himself and the women of his race as inferior.

When will white women get it through your heads that you are a trphy piece for self-hating Black men. Nothing more nothing less.

Moonsigns OUGHT to be taking note from this thread. If she cares anything about her half-breed calves, she wouldn't let them walk around looking like bushy matted-headed babies, as most white women of biracial children do.

Or... perhaps her children "benefited" from their genetic wheel of Bi-racial (MIS)FORTUNE, acquiring the limp-ass weak dog-hair gene. In any case, her hairstyle motto is "let it lay, where it lay."

Yes, LiLi, how quickly we forget that hair products were what earned Madam C.J. Walker her fortune back in the days when pomades and straightening combs were standard equipment for black woman. With the advent of more sophisticated technologies, black folks did at least formulate and manufacture and market these products. But their entrepreneural spirit eventually let them down when it came down to the neighborhood venues. Yet - look what happened to the auto and electronic industries. The Koreans and Japanese are kicking the butts of corporate America, too.
