A lot of Japanese people say incredibly stupid things without even realizing it or even caring. It seems to be an Asian syndrome.

Roxie, maybe we have a different understanding of the word "colorism," but I always thought it was specifically about intra-group prejudice. A Japanese person remarking that light skinned blacks are smarter than dark skinned blacks would just be garden variety "racism," not "colorism," according to my understanding of the word.

It's colorism because light skinned Asians discriminate against dark skinned Asians. This is well known. Asians and people of India are the #1 purchasers of Skin bleaching creams. If an Asian feels that way about blacks, he feels the same against his own people. It's colorism and there's not much difference tween colorism and racism. If you're one, you're automatically the other.

Good questions. I was rather confused by the whole thing. "What's the point?" is what I really meant by my first post.

I'm not sure why what the Japanse think should be important to black people. Why are you interested in their viewpoints ? As far as I know their viewpoints on ideal skin color developed completely independent of interaction with blacks or whites. Don't mean to sound rude....just curious.

Dahomeyahosi,

I wasn't expecting any serious disscusion from this. The sit is just so absurd that I just HAD to share it with everyone. From his screenshots, I can only assume the movies this guy seems to like are:
Action Jackson
The last Dragon
DC Cab
Amistad
Crossroads
SNL from the 70s (with garret Morris)
Airplane (with Kareem abdul Jabaar)
Police Academy (Officers Hightower, Jones and Mahoney)
and Some 70s movie with a pimp in a yellow jumpsuit and a whitelady in a bikini of the same color.

We (or at least our stereotypes) seem to be a weird fetish for this guy. ^^'

Actually, they didn't, most Japanese attitudes about dark skin they acquired from Europeans or Middle-Easterners.

That is interesting. I have always been told (by Asians) that the East Asian preference for light skin (which seems to be prevalent throughout the region) goes back to traditional Sino-Japanese values. On the other hand in my country (Benin) traditionally we always valued darker skin. I can contrast this against current Eurocentrically influenced beliefs that tend towards the opposite. Are you sure the Europeans and middle Easterners didn't simply reinforce an ideal that was already in place ?

The Asians today don't know their own history, they're so brainwashed by American/Western movies, commercials, etc. If you listen to a lot of them talk, they sound extremely clueless. That's because their educational systems do not in any way stress independent thinking, but simply to follow whomever is in charge.

In traditional Asian cultures, WHITE was the color of mourning, death, passitivity, etc., whereas BLACK was just the opposite. On the other hand, there were a handful of Africans who were imported into China as slaves by Arabs and Persians and, lo and behold, other Africans(mainly East African siddis from Gedi, Mombasa, Kilwa, etc.). When the Europeans took control of East Asia, they poisoned Asians with their values of light=good and dark=bad. Modern Asians are totally confused and whitified(and sometimes blackified, which is absurd), and it's difficult to take them seriously in these regards.

From what I learned, in the asian world (prior to white influence), dark skin was associated with the lower classes while light skin was associated with the upper classes. That is, those who had to work for a living spent more time in the sun, while the wealther classes were able to stay indoors.
Even in thailand today, darker thais (especially women) are assumed to be poorer thais.

I gotta agree, the current view asians have towards blacks came from europeans and MEs.

Roxie I have heard the same thing repeatedly. This is compatible with the views in Benin because West African women work outside traditionally and, because hard working women were traditionally highly valued, dark skin was also valued. Social structure has a lot to do with it.

Schakspir with all due respect it is absurd for a non-Asian to claim to know more about Asian tradition than Asians themselves. Possible yes but highly unlikely. If the knowledge is available to you then certainly it is available to them. I try to take it straight from those concerned because I have been very frustrated by others, primarily Western Europeans, remaking, interpreting and erasing West African traditions. I would not do that to anyone else.

Are some Japanese people so socially and culturally bereft and empty they must concern themselves with some RIDICULOUSLY INSANE notion of whether lightskinned Black Americans are smarter than darkskinned Black Americans?

If this is a popular website, I pity the Japanese.

Be more shrewd than that Abm.

Imagine how every race must benefit from the genetic breakdown of the "black race" just as they benefit from any other breakdown of black men.

Africa is up for grabs, just as it was hundreds of years ago.

Japan is a superpower with a stake in black people's future, Korea's economy depends on the self hate of negroes and these people have always invested in black sweat.

It's the black man who is bereft.

Henry,

The ONLY hope for the "black race" if for it to STOP concerning itself with how others (especially some ignant mofo's on the other side world) make fun of images of us (many of them WE'VE helped create/perpetuate) and to, instead, effectively work TOGETHER to build the kinds of families, communities, schools, commerce and institutions that are so potent those sonsofb*tches in Japan wouldn't dare post bvllshyt like this on a website.

Ha ha, Henry, what a laugh--it shows you how much you know about Africans. What a fool. Do you think the marshmallow-soft Japanese could seriously fight a war against those rough-and-tumble Africans, who have absolutely *nothing* to lose?
The Japanese would lose in a fortnight, say, against Tanzania. It would be like a hamster fighting a rat. To be honest, it's not Africa that's up for grabs--it's the West, of which Japan is a part of.

So this guy seems to have a subconcious preference for our most cartoonish reperesntations.

Japanese just don't like non-japanese people period. I think that they call all non-japanese people "gai-jin" (sp?), or in other words 'outsiders". What they did to Chinese and Koreans during WWII is just mind blowing. Medical experiments on Chinese people, etc. I spent two months in Japan and on the island of Okinawa. One reason they have negative attitude is because of Hollywood. Second, due to US military bases next to Tokyo and in Okinawa. Their experience with Black US soldiers is not the best. Some Black high school students went to Tokyo and were in the News for days for stealing from shops. One thing that I noticed is that they had better relations with Blacks from Africa than with Blacks from Niggastan. In Okinawa, women just did not like US soldiers period (rapes, etc). One thing I found out from my short stay was that they were just ignorant about our world and prefered to only read comic books and play video games.

I've had several Japanese friends over the years. Two were actually best friends of mine for a while. They (the friends of mine, at least) disliked mostly Chinese, Indian, and white people.

They loved Jamaican, Virgin Island, and African people (one even moved to Kenya, where there's a small Japanese population, and SOMEHOW grew dreadlocks), but disliked most African AMERICANS.

They seemed to hate Indians and Pakistanis, but loved Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, and Nepalese.

They loved Mexicans, but hated Mexican Americans.

They loved Koreans and Vietnamese, but hated Chinese.

They seemed to tolerate Europeans, but (the men) hated White Americans.

One friend even said pretty much every time we ate out that he doesn't tip whites or Chinese. And he meant it.

I can't say that this is typical of all Japanese, because I don't know. But all of my Japanese friends over the years (about 15 to 20 or so), seemed to feel this way. Only 2 were women.

So apparently, the hate is mutual.

Asians are the stupidest and most Colorstruck ppl ought there. They say that 25% of all Asian women in this country are married to Honkies. They also say that in the Asian community to have a half-white half-Asian baby is a "Big Thing". They don't want their children to have Asian features. So they "marry up" with white men. Shame on Them!
