Hi all.

I get so much email asking me about rumors.

I knew nothing about a Jan. 10th Press Release that contained information about my life being made into a movie that was Issued:

http://www.emediawire.com/releases/2006/1/emw311593.htm

All I can say is that 3 studios--DISNEY, FOX SEARCHLIGHT and MTV FILMS have requested the "final" manuscript of my autobiography, "Diary of a Lost Girl" and are seeking RIGHTS.

Keep in mind that the "Rights" to 90% of "ALL" memoirs are purchased---but out of that 90% only about 10% become actual movies.

It's way too early to give any information other than that.

I do feel that NONA GAYE is the only actress out there who has a similar look to mines and is a deep enough actress to play the role. I think she could soar if they picked her,

but it is WAY TOO EARLY for those kind of decisions and the rumors floating around that she is going to play me are just that----rumors. I don't know Ms. Gaye and I don't get the feeling that the studios are interested in anybody BUT Halle Berry, but of course, Halle is all wrong for this role and think she would realize that.

I do love the idea of Alek Wek playing my mother, although she looks nothing like her and is "way lighter" than my mother was--picture IMAN with charcoal skin, and that's how my mother looked.

For those who would like to "peek" at some of the chapters in the book that feature OSAMA BIN LADEN, my publishers have created this web page:

Well, if you have any say in its production, perhaps you can have me cast as an extra?

Renata,

I would have you cast as my sister SPRING.

And that's a promise. I will insist.

She has a few important scenes during the time I was under government protection. She and I are close and she's very feisty and beautiful.

Send me your full actress name so I can have it put down as a "line item" in any rights contracts that the role of Spring (or an alternative role should that one be written out) has to go to Kola's colleague, Renata so and so.

And Renata--please know that whatever I say to Cynique or some other folks in vile anger...in no way is meant towards you. I think of you as my own (not that you should give a shit, seriously), but I do. I often say things just to piss off the Light Brow paperbag people.

It's funny, Kola. There's this fan of yours on another board who just represents you allllllll wrong, swearing up and down that you personally said that Nona Gaye was cast. I said "If anyone will get the story straight and do it publicly, Kola will". And sure enough, here it is. I'll be sure to sure to do my part to spread the message. Thanks, love. :-)

Hi again, Kola:

Here is a thread in which a so-called fan may or may not be spreading false information, going as far as to name names of professionals who may/may not be in your camp or may/may not exist:

http://blackcommunity.blackvoices.aol.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&tsn=1&ti d=137050&webtag=ti-entertainmnt

Would you care to confirm, deny or clarify anything this "lydialovelash" is saying? I'm not saying I don't believe you - I'm saying that this kid is a serious liar, who for some strange reason tends to tell rumors about you that are very far-fetched and are easily disproven (which is very counterproductive, seeing that she calls herself one of your biggest fans).

Jen,

(sigh)

Thanks for posting this. My response is going to be very detailed.

Yes, of course, I know Lydia. She's not just a Kola Boof supporter, a pain in the neck (I mean that affectionately, albeit, truthfully) and a golpher for several gossip magazines, but she's also--EXAGGERATING---

but I think it's partly my fault, because she gets "carried away" and I have shared with her, more than once, my "dream cast" for a film should it be made.

There has also been "discussion" between myself and everyone involved with this book (at Door of Kush and at the various Production Offices) about what my choices would be---and when my publisher issued this press release, obviously, those actors were mentioned, but nowhere in the release does it say that they have been cast or that a film is even being made. The press release clearly states that there is INTEREST from studios and that these are the people Ms. Boof has envisioned in the roles. This is standard practice for producers, publishers, record companies and anyone else attempting to get people to talk abut their project--to attach rumor and speculation to it.

The thing is. I did not know about the press release--but I can't say that I would have done it any differently. The people named really are my personal "choices".

It's possible that everything Lydia's saying could come true. But the fact (at this moment) is that the rights to the book have not been sold, and even if they had been--it would be months before Pre-production arrived at a point where anyone could be approached about being cast.

It is true that the book is very, very powerful and that we are receiving a strong response from film people.

I named Nona Gaye, during a radio interview several months ago, when fans pressed me to say who I could see playing me in the role. I also named John Torturro as the actor who most reminded me of Bin Laden.

This book was first announced several years ago--but because I refused to allow Osama's face on the cover (or anywhere in the book)--I had to sit out that contract and go to a smaller, "black owned" publishing house so that I could tell my story with integrity and more class than the larger conglomerates were interested in.

I turned down $437,000 to do that.

Just as the tabloids reported years ago---Halle Berry's agent had read an early draft of my memoir and was very interested in having Halle play the role. This was just before "Monster's Ball" won her the OSCAR--she had done "Dorothy Dandridge" and was looking for another juicy role.

I've met Halle before (my husband used to work for her) and I think she's one of the most beautiful, sweetest women I've ever met; inside and out--however, she's way too short (I'm over 6' tall and that matters--as I'm the highest ranking woman in the Sudanese People's Liberation Army), her demeanor is too slight and she's too American looking--not just too light skinned, despite the fact that we're both "technically" biracial--but she's too American looking to play a Nilotic African woman.

Nona, on the other hand, doing a North Egypto accent could be convincing as a foreigner and an African woman whose carriage is "proud" and "Africoid".

A major turning point in my life was being put up for adoption by my Egyptian grandmother for being "too dark". This is crucial to the story. Halle couldn't play that, but Nona could.

I was asked two years ago to audition (screen test) for the role of "STORM" in the X-MEN movies when Halle Berry wasn't going to continue in the role. Because I would have to wear "blond" hair, and because I am very serious about my literary career, I declined to pursue the part. However, I became aware of Nona Gaye at that time, because a producer at FOX showed me a film at his home in which she appeared. We both remarked that she had the "unique damask" of facial features and the "physicality" that I have.

She can look at a man---"diabolically"---as I often do. She can move like a panther and she can be both soft, feminine and alluring, but also wild and androgynous.

I am an extremely intelligent African woman with very specific cultural values and am very political. Nona, I felt, could come to understand my principles and convey them without looking like she's "pretending".

Well. You get the point.

As for WHY would anyone want to play Kola Boof...

I don't know if you've ever read any of my books, but just yesterday, your own legendary Dr. Molefe Kete Asante called me "one of our greatest writers".

The great Nigerian Scholar Chinweizu, whose books are edited by Toni Morrison, has said--"Kola Boof is the most important African writer since Njabulo Ndebele."

Derrick Bell at New York University has written: "Kola Boof is a writer of power, principle, and loads of courageous
perseverance
".

Joe Madison, the former head of the NAACP and a very close friend of mines has said---"Kola Boof is one of the most fabulous women I've ever met."

The former Prime Minister of ISRAEL, Netanyahu, listed me as one of the 10 women in the world that he most admires and featured me on his web site.

I have appeared in over 40 Arabic films and been employed, albeit sinfully...by Egypt's President Mubarak and by Moamar Khadafi, the leader of LIBYA as a party hostess.

So what real actress worth her salt wouldn't want to play such a colorful woman?

Does Nona Gaye expect to become a Bette Davis, a Joan Crawford, a Jane Fonda, a Meryl Streep or a Rita Hayworth by just playing "safe" forgettable roles?

Certainly with my traditional ways (topless on the back of my book covers to honor MY ancestors), and outspoken politics and my embracing of my Africanness....I seem like a "weirdo" to the untrained Black American....but I am a truly gifted artist, one whose stature will grow with each new book release--and a woman of ideals and integrity.

Kola

Certainly there's a few jealous people---Dominique DiPrima comes to mind--who cut their eyes and make cynical comments about me....but that's because they're ignorant of my work and about my life. And in Dominique's case (her father being Amiri Baraka)--just aren't as "authentic" as I am, and so--they feeling inadequate and calling themselves "black women", but not knowing the history of what a BLACK WOMAN is....they try to muddy my name and dismiss me as a "mythical figure".

It's all catwishing, and CREAM rises to the top---and I am the CREAM.

Any good actress would kill to play such a complicated multi-faceted such woman as Kola Boof.

Last---I am bound to HOST the Kool Room for aalbc.com, under which agreement I can never post any comments at Black Voices. But I am fully aware of ISISNAMBI (I even ask her to shut up in my autobiography), and I realize that she can be overly excited and get carried away with the rumors...but I have not been successful in shutting her up over the years. She promises to tone it down, and then BAM---she has me dating Idris Elba, a man I've never met, nor would I date ANYONE--because I'm back with my children's father.

No one in my camp, however, have said that Nona Gaye is going to play me.

I can't imagine any reason that Nona Gaye would be annoyed in the least about being mentioned for this role.

She's almost as attractive as I was at her age.

But I thank you for giving me an opportunity to talk about it.

Kola, (to your second post) I kind of figured that, that's why I never said anything. It's the same thing as when I've met men who would BRAG and tell me all the kids they had that they didn't take care of, and I called them STUPID NIGGER to their face. I have nothing against men in general, but these particular men just really piss me off.

About who's being cast to play you, I think (of course, my favorite) Angela Bassett would be terrific and would give your character passion.

She's almost as attractive as I was at her age.

Your modesty is refreshing! ;)

My "why" question was more of a slam on Halle Berry, not on you. I'm no fan of Halle's - though I'm sure she's a very sweet woman, I personally think she'd rather eat dirt than play a role of a strong, take-no-stuff black woman, even though she would be able to show her breasts and have sex with a non-black man (smile). I often joke with my friends that if I die, to PLEASE make sure Halle Berry doesn't play me in a movie, and when we're all threatening each other, we tend to say "Okay, that's it! Halle Berry is going to be you in your life film!"

I interviewed Nona back in 2004 for Africana (before it became AOL BlackVoices). The interview didn't run (drama between me and my editor) but Nona and I grew very close. I consider her a sister, and her mother Janis my "other mother", as she calls herself. Her son Nolan calls me "Aunt Jenn". So when I research something like this so aggressively, please understand that it has everything to do with Pie (as we call Nona) and nothing to do with attacking you. Replace "Kola Boof" with "Maharincess of Franistan" and my reaction wouldn't have been any different. I just believe in going straight to the source to get a story straight, if I can. We always knew Lydia was a liar - er, I mean EXAGGERATOR - and as for Isis? Well, she just needs some serious fricking help.

I don't know if you've ever read any of my books

I know of you - have known of you for years - and your upcoming autobiography is on my "must-read" list. I don't listen to hype men, nor butcher men. I do my own research and draw my own conclusions.

I can't imagine any reason that Nona Gaye would be annoyed in the least about being mentioned for this role.

That's not Nona's way at all. She's probably a little baffled, but more along the lines of "why would this famous author choose ME to play her in a movie?" and not "Who the hell is this woman and why should I play her?" The only way I could see her being annoyed is that if it looked like you were using her name to shop your movie around - which is what the press releases made it look like. Which is why I was happy to see you step up and say "no, that's not coming from me". I figured it was just a misunderstanding of sorts, and I respect you for stepping forward to set it all straight.

As for Angela playing Kola, this is where I point out that she's shorter than Halle - only about 5'4".

Jenn, thank you so much.

I admire Nona Gaye and predict she's going to be our next Angela Bassett.

I now realize that she might not take such a role as "Kola Boof", due to the nudity--although, if I had my way--there's really no reason that nudity would have to be in a dramatization. It could be "implied", which to me, would make it even sexier. Contrary to what people think, I don't walk around nude all day. Only during prayer at my river with my sons--which is private property. And on the back of my books--because the Zarpunni (the women's neighborhood) believes that you must bare breasts in public. Putting the photos on the back of the books is my way of identifying (repping') that I from Nilotic culture.

I do not, however, walk down the street topless---EVER.

I see the rumor spread to VIBE:

http://www.vibe.com/community/message_boards/viewtopic.php?t=13258

Please tell Nona that I'm so sorry if she's annoyed by this. I can promise that all future publicity won't mention her name from Door of Kush or myself--but I can't predict what others who've already heard the gossip will do. That part is out of my hands.

When I did the radio interview and named her, fans were cheering (for instance, my close friend Keith Boykin), because they thought---she's the perfect person to bring this "heffa" to life. LOL

The truth is, it's WAY TOO EARLY and we all know how Hollywood treats "black female" projects--so although they are acting very excited, I don't even want to get my hopes up only to be shot down.

But if it ever does get to the "green light" stage---you can be sure that I've already made it clear that I think Nona is the only actress who could make this film a success and bring it class, and I'm more than certain that she would be offered the role.

My next novel, however...HAS BEEN "sold" to Warner Bros. It's called "The Sexy Part of the Bible", and as always, my books feature many strong, juicy black female characters--this particular book is about "cloning" and comes out in 2007--so I will always keep Nona in mind should they make that book (or "Flesh and the Devil") into films. These books are chock full of fabulously nuanced and unique roles that black actresses rarely get the chance to play.

I personally love an actress named Yolonda Ross ("Stranger Inside") and I would love to see her get some great parts playing in films of books. But there's at least 4 to 5 strong roles in each of my books, and I do that on purpose--because having been in 40 Arabic B-movies and only starring as the lead in one ("Al Sitar"), I know how hard it is to find three-dimensional interesting characters to play with good dialogue and unique perspectives.

My book for 2008 is "Virgins In the Beehive", which is about 3 Black American women who discover they're "biological sisters" and start their own religion after their activist mother is executed in the Texas electric chair for killing a racist Federal Judge.

Warner Bros. has requested that one when it's finished as well.

Best to you and Nona, sister.

Kola

She doesn't look old, so that's just B.S.

I'm only 31, and if I ever do anything that would make me interesting enough to make a movie about me, I would hope they would let Angela do it.

I can't say for sure, because I don't know what their motive is, but I'm thinking they don't want Angela because she would bring too much attention to it. People will hear Angela's name, and KNOW that it's high quality, award-worthy drama.

The movie takes place in my 20's, Renata. Some scenes are when I'm 17, because a lot happened that year.

Angela Bassett is 45.

Angela Basset is one of the only two women in the industry who can capture Kola Boof. The other women is the female from girlfriends (Mya).. the one who plays the working-class sistah, single mother, and published author. Not because of the similarities neither. That sistah is bad. I saw her in a dramatic movie - can't remember the title - but she rocked the house. She's just as bad as Angela Bassett and, although neither one of them look like you, she and Angella Bassett are a tie at being the best to portray you.

Yolonda Ross is one of my favorite actresses, and "Stranger Inside" is one of the best movies I've ever seen. She's got some upcoming projectes listed on imdb.com, and I'm looking forward to seeing her again!

Kola, could you confirm or deny this post in particular, please?

I saw some of that script, too!

The flashbacks scenes where her parents get killed in front of her and the scenes in the mental ward will win whoever plays it an Academy Award. Not to mention the scenes in Egypt where she was doing t.v. commercials and had to be a kept woman for a politician in Parliament and she attempted suicide.

Has a script been written? If it has been, was it by an "E.R." writer, as lydia claims?

The truth is, it's WAY TOO EARLY and we all know how Hollywood treats "black female" projects--so although they are acting very excited, I don't even want to get my hopes up only to be shot down.

I don't blame you one bit! Nothing wrong with playing your cards close to your chest - that's the smart thing to do, as far as I'm concerned.

Don't forget - Angela played a 17 year old girl before. She still can, no doubt.

No, she can't. That's the point. Angela is a magnificent actress, but she - like Halle in "Their Eyes Were Watching God - looked like a fool playing a teenager.

The other women is the female from girlfriends (Mya).. the one who plays the working-class sistah, single mother, and published author.

Golden Brooks! She's my favorite "Girlfriend".

Well, Kola, I guess you have a point. If she were playing a 30 year old, it would work, but I don't think she'd a convincing 17 year old. Could she act the part? Hell yeah. But not really look the part.

Jenn,

I have no knowledge of a script being written for "Diary".

Isis/Lydia does have an advanced copy "Diary of a Lost Girl" (my autobiography) and is probably making up "hype" from reading the actual book.

Forgive me--I said "Idris Elba" earlier, but it was Djimon Hounsou that Isis was running around telling people I was dating. I had never met this man in my life (had no idea that he lived just a few miles from me--and on his part,he had never heard of me).

Her lie became so humiliating for me, because I was sitting with my hubby one day, shucking corn, and the phone rings.

It's Djimon Hounsou explaining to me who he is and wanting to know---"When are we going out?"

My mouth fell open with embarrassment.

My husband was not amused and neither was Djimon.

I could have killed Isis, but then others said to me--"she IS making people notice and remember your name".

Once Djimon knew the details, he laughed for days and told me it was good publicity for him. People were talking about him.

I am a controversial artist, one who is not generally liked by American media--as I pointed out earlier, it's the Black American intellectuals who are my supporters and followers, so I am grateful to have young "fans", hip young people who support me like Isis/Lydia, and although I get angry with her, I realize that she is a kid and I try not to hurt her feelings. But you are right. She "exaggerates" things too much, and afterwards, she constantly hypes it.

Golden Brooks is too American looking for my tastes as well.

Nona Gaye has the "height", physicality (she's kinda thick, but still Hollywood shaped) and the "mysterious allure"--the look of someone who is foreign. When I first saw her, I thought she was from the West Indies, Africa or Brazil. The bone structure is aristocratic and the eyes and brows are soulful (almost menacing).

I love Golden Brooks, but she'd be better cast in one of my novels as an AA girl or as someone like Pam Grier.

Whether or not he or your husband were amused, having Djimon call your house is not a bad thing.

Halle Berry CANNOT and SHOULD NOT play you. You need a fellow black african actress to play you. It would be more respectful to your image.

Question, Kola. I think we can both agree that your creditibility has been questioned since day one, whether that's a fair thing or not. So why do you let people like Isis/Lydia in your inner circle, inevitably causing more harm than good? I understand that free press is free press, but - and I'll use BV as an example - the majority of the people that I know who have been in L/I's presence feel that you are a fake, and that she is you, and it's SOLELY because of the way she "promotes" you. And as a wife and mother, I would think that anyone insinuating that you're having an affair with another man (and going as far as to write a phony AP article about it) can't be good to you, professionally or personally. So why do you let her stay? I mean...I guess I feel like Nona is my friend, and I would never say something so terrible, much less spread it, and if someone WAS saying such a thing, I'd be all over that person's ass like R. Kelly on a 3rd grader (which admittedly, makes me look like an obsessed fan myself). So why do you let such a snake stay around?

(Now, to be fair. I'm not too sure that the person who made the original Kola/Djimon thread was a supporter or just a common troll.)

You missed the thread where Kola said goodbye, Jenn.

I forgot which one.

She's signed with Random House now and is doing publicity for her autobiography, so she said she won't be here very often. Maybe every few months.
