Miss Boof,

Regarding skin tone.

I just finished your wonderful novel "Flesh and the Devil". It was one of the best books I've read in like ten years! That's first.

But the lead character is a very light complected girl with green eyes. Her mother who is also very light skinned is violently abusive towards her daughter for being light skinned.

The mother, Soraya, favors her two dark skinned children, especially Sula, but she hates RooAmber's coloring.

I had read so many of your internet comments regarding the mistreatment of darker skinned brothers and sisters, so I found this to be a contradiction in what you preach. You made it seem in the book as though very light skinned women suffer worse than their darker sisters.

Which is it?

First of all, "few" have peeped this yet

---but my fiction books are QUITE DIFFERENT than my writings on this discussion board.

When I'm on this board...I'm Kola, the soccer mom and homemaker. I'm just being myself on these boards (ditto my autobiography, you get the real KOLA).

But in my fiction writing...I must represent many more people than myself.

I have to speak up for RENATA, AfroAmerican, Steve_s who is white.....as well as women like TONYA and myself. I can't just rant Kola's opinion in a novel.

So there is no contradiction.

RooAmber's character is based on my sister, Spring, who is high yellow with green/gray eyes.

I wanted to show COLORISM from a different angle.

The prejudice that is against darker blacks is also heavily documented throughout the story.

But I wanted to show a lightskinned black girl being treated by a Psychiatrist because....she's lightskinned and rejected.

IRONICALLY: because so many light skinned people believe that I hate them for being light...LOL....they're usually too afraid to read my books, because they're expecting to enter a coal mine. LOLLLLL

I'm sure Interracial couples would also be stunned to find IR couples existing happily in my books.

People forget that I'm a PROFESSIONAL writer.
