And this was in an affluent section of Northern California. After having been away from California for a few years and then hearing Kola's horror stories, I must say I was a bit disappointed. |

Well, at least now you know that I wasn't exaggerating.
And in my valley, all 18 of the black men are married or living with Non-black women.
I have never seen that many black women with white men (you said 6 couples)--but I'm glad to hear it. I would rather they not sit around waiting and wasting their lives on men who don't want them.
In Southern California, all you ever see is Black men with non-black women.

There's an new movie coming out called: "Something New" starring sanaa Lathan.
From what I could peice together from nthe trailer, she falls for a white gardener whom she has hired to lay down flowers in her backyard. Meanwhile she's pressured by her friends to marry a black man that they set her up with.
One line spoken stood out in my mind. It's when one of her friends says lightheartedly: "If you won't take him [the black suitor], *I'll* take him. I'll give him some BLACK ASHEY BABIES!"
I immediately thought, "This is the perfect film to recommend for everyone on this board." I'll check it out, even though we all probably already know which man Sanaa will choose. |

Funny, every time I see black women on internet forums discussing their interest in white men, they, like you, are quick to dismiss the idea that they've EVER hurt for attention from black men. Hell, many admit that they were never attracted to black men in the first place anyway, or that they always preferred white (or other non-black) men, ever since they developed an interest in boys.
So my question is, who exactly ARE these lonely black women you speak of? Further, since you say that black men have chased you your entire life, what makes YOU so special? Why has your experience been so radically different from your constituency?
Maybe you can lend thems some pointers. |

Obviously, the metric-ton success of films like "Waiting to Exhale", the black women's lit boom, the Mary J. phenom and countless media articles written by black women are small indicators to the fact that 42% of black women (the largest perc. in the world) will never marry and one only need look in the clubs, the churches, and everywhere else to see evidence of this American phenomenom.

Er, but there's NO shortage of black women with appealing bodies. I'm still confused. WHy do black men adore YOU and hate the millions of other black women with nice bodies?

LOL, I'm only following YOUR logic. You imply that black women only start dating white men after being ignored/rejected by black men, so I imagine there must be a whole lot of lonely black women out there who haven't found white men yet.

MOST black men...never marry.
15% of Black men and 5% of black women date outside their race.
Just 7 years ago...only 3% of black men and 1.2% of black women dated outside their race.
Because the media is SELLING "IR" to our youth---it's growing by leaps and bounds in community.
Yet still only 2% of WHITES date out of their race (their 211 million whites in this country, 43 million blacks).
SO OBVIOUSLY....it has a LOT to do with it.

If you do the math, you'll realize that because WHITES outnumber us nearly 5 to 1....this is not affecting the White American race. They're simply depositing their unwanted TRASH in our bedrooms.
But it IS affecting and weakening our communities.
We can't get unity and we don't trust each other anymore.
CORRECTION:
There are now 43 million LATINO Americans
and 38 million BLACK Americans.

White men are always lying about their numbers. Better make that 50-60 million Latinos and roughly 45-50 million blacks, and about 20-30 million Asians. (Could actually be more Latinos.) White men do this all around the world, in Latin America and Europe, playing up their numbers to make themselves feel secure, and fool themselves into thinking that their numbers are not dropping.... |

### Well, I dunno. I hear this complaint from every black woman I know. BAR NONE! I think it is greatly exaggerated. I had a sista gurl neighbor who swore that 90% of the black males in San Diego date non-black women! She was relentless and would not back down from her obviously flawed statistics. I asked a few other black women did they agree with her BM/FM stats and they all agreed!! WTF??? Why would they agree with something that is clearly false? This ratio obviously exists in their minds and not in the real world. I asked them did they understand the reality of their belief. They said yes. I then asked them; “Let me get this straight. You believe that 90% of the black men in San Diego date non-black women?” They all said yes. Then I asked them; “So, you believe that only one out of ten black men date black women? That means only 10 black men are in relationships with black women out of every 100! You really believe that?” They paused and said “Yes”. I rest my case.

Hi Tonya,
Very little (academically, almost nothing) has been written specifically about "colorism" itself before the civil rights movement.
It's a subject that has always been shrouded in DENIAL and was something you just did not talk about until very recently.
"The Blacker the Berry" by Wallace Thurman, written in the 1920's is the most thorough and forthright book that deals exclusively with the subject.
Zora Neal Hurston wrote a play called "ColorStruck" circa 1928, which I've never read.
"Passing" by Nella Larsen is not directly about colorism, but shows prime examples and "ideation" of it.
"Maud Martha" by Gwendolyn Brooks is "quietly" about the subject, as it explores what it was like to be a black wife in the 1940's and was published in 1953.
"The Bluest Eye", of course, by Toni Morrison is the next landmark after "The Blacker the Berry". This book deals directly with the issue...showing it as a virus that envelopes the entire community.
Non-fiction works have been slow to really honor the subject.
"In Search of Our Mother's Gardens" by Alice Walkers has several essays that take the subject by the horns and totally lay it bare.
"The Color Complex" by various authors talks about the issue, but I didn't think it was comprehensive or honest enough.
"Don't Play In the Sun" by Marita Golden is the newest and most in depth essay on the phenomenon, and it's quite good.
As you can see....although it pervades and rots our communities, very little has been written about it. Many of the top black feminists and academics (Cornel West, for instance)...DO NOT like to talk about it.
I was so astounded when Johnetta B. Cole and her colleague at Spelman did their last book about feminism and black women---writing the whole history of black women in this country---and yet they failed to mention "colorism"....one single time in the entire 400 something page book.
They pretended that all black women are treated the same and merrily went along writing MOSTLY about the experiences of middle class yellow women.
The most comprehensive tackling of the issue, I believe, EVER...is contained in my autobiography, "Diary of a Lost Girl".

What's up Kola! My holiday was fine -- I hope yours was the same!
Thanks a million for the list. I've been reading a lot of books lately which are supposedly for & about black women and you are right -- most of the authors overlooked colorism -- which is a shame because, even though the books were very good, that kind of omission takes away from otherwise comprehensive discussions about race, specifically regarding black women; and it seriously questions the authors' integrity.
Most of the books that you listed I have, but there's a couple that I don't so thanks again.
