MORGAN FREEMAN says get rid of
Black History month...
end racism by not
talking about it!

Dumb Ass

NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."

Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson‘s Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."

"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I‘m going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.

____________

"You’re going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS’ "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don’t want a black history month. Black history is American history."

Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."

The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.

"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I’m going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.

Freeman received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1987’s "Street Smart," 1989’s "Driving Miss Daisy" and 1994’s "The Shawshank Redemption." He finally won earlier this year for "Million Dollar Baby."

Well, of course I disagree and I think he's simplifying very serious issues.

The history of white people is celebrated every moment...in television commercials, on billboards, the movie "KING KONG" and the movie "Good Luck and Good Night"---are full of WHITE history if you notice.

Music videos are often chock full of WHITE history.

Did anyone notice how artists like
Madonna, Culture Club, Streisand, Bruce Springsteen and countless others incorporated
White History in their most successful videos
---and did it all the time?

Michael Jackson gave us "Remember the Times",
thankfully. But we rarely get that.

___________

Black history SHOULD BE celebrated every day...but the schools aren't going to do it.

They don't even celebrate it during February.

And am I the only person who's noticed that
most Black children nowadays have no clue who
Frederick Douglass is?

Black parents don't teach Black history.

Black MEDIA doesn't transmit black history.

At 68, he's obviously from an older stock of blacks who actually thrive on these kinds of illusions of inclusion fantasies that to me seem so imbicilic.

"The world did not begin--on the day that YOU were born."

I can agree with that. :-)Actually all of it.

I just wish Black history month would stop being monotonous with the usual figures (harriet tubman, frderick douglass. etc.) I not saying they aren't important peoplein our hisory, they are , but they aren't the ONLY people in our history. Cedric the enertainer's character in "barbershop" was right about one thing: there are so many other equally important people in our history that get left in the shadows of obsurity while others are promoted and commerciaized. Many of the black figures taught in school are very "mainstream" and "friendly".

but I feel that's another doing of this country's picking and choosing of which people are acceptable for everyone in the nation and which are juch a little "too much". Like promoting MLK over Malcolm X.

[*sarcastically*]After all, nobody wants to ignite a sense of rebellion amongst the little black children.

I, myself, think that black history month is dispensible. It's almost childish in its intent. It's like blacks are saying please pat us on the head and single us out from all other ethnic groups who contributed to the making of America.

No other ethnic group contibuted like blacks or as much as blacks have.

AAs built this country.... We did all the hard labor... that's for sure.

I think, when it comes to ethnic groups (and our personal perspective, as well), we should be "on the head" (whatever that means), and singled out.

What can one do...this country is too stupid to understand intellectuals and so stupid to use an actor to address a question of culture and knowledge.

At the same time....who knows where he is going with this? He could be saying that instead of relegating black history to a month, that is should be taught year around. This is what I have been saying for years, especially since black history has commercialized, by mcdonalds, burger king, and various soft drink and automobile companies....

Also, he is quite smart in not using black as a discriptor, for that could force whites people to see us as humans...this is important, no?

Now, this doesn't mean an erasure of racism, and he is so very foolishly if he confuse (1) unnaming race, with (2) the fortitude of racism...race and racism are two different, though connected, categories in the first place....

So, who knows? presently, though, he sounds foolish!

This is crazy. .

Some of these people don't want to be called black...

And some don't want to be called African Americans...

Some want to keep their history, while some want to erace it..

This is insane and it gives me headache, but I will give my opinion..

Morgan Freeman is just tired of being the black man, simple as that..

His idea of getting rid of black history month makes sense because white people don't have that.

The truth is, white people's history is not celebrated in no February or January. It is celebrated from January until December!

That's white history...

Black history month deserves to stay, but it shouldn't be celebrated for the people in the present, but for the people whom died for the freedom of today's people..

And what should decendants of Africans be called today? If "black" is gotten rid of, there will no longer be black culture, black television, etc.. And one can't get rid of "AA" because Africa is a very important part of black American history, just like Europe is a very important part of the white man's history...
Why should we get rid of us, what's the point in refusing to be identified as black?

The truth is, whites aren't white in color, but they're the closest to the color white. And blacks aren't always black in color, but they're the closest to the color black.. so it makes sense.

Black history month ought to stay and it should be celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and pride ! If celebrated enough, one day would even be enough to celebrate it! The situation is, black people need to be celebrated from January -through December period! And the month of February should ber kept to remember those who truly cared for the freedom.

And the same goes for latinos, Africans, Asians, etc...

I recall reading somewhere that Carter Woodson, the man responsible for designating February as a month to focus on black history, never intended for it to be a permanent thing; just a temporary commemorative to advance the idea of having this subject taught in schools. Many black scholars and academics agree with Morgan Freeman, saying that black history is American history. During the 1800s America was flooded with waves of immigrants from Europe and they provided the cheap labor that fueled the industrialization of the North, toiling in the steel mills and sweat shops and coal mines while the Chinese immigrants built the trans-continental railroads. During slavery black labor was present in the building trades, but after Reconstruction because of Jim Crow practices, blacks were mostly restricted to sharecropping farms in the south. We all know that Blacks are responsible for the only original music form of America, which is one of our greatest contribution to the culture. Blacks also produced inventors and scientists and outstanding artists and athletes, but so did the many other ethnic groups. All of this is why I say that since blacks are woven into the fabric of the American tapestry they shouldn't be separated from American history.

That's not hard labaor? And let's not forget.. most of our labor was FREE (!!!).

And so were the immigrants. But the way I see it, we contributed more cuz, like I said, most of our shit was free.

You said: Blacks are responsible for the only original music form of America, which is one of our greatest contribution to the culture.

I say: You really need to read George Washington Carvers biography.

His invention of uses for not only the peanut and soy bean revolutionized the auto industry and Ford (or his ancestors) can vouch for that!!

Do you drive??? Because the Billions of drivers accross the world can thank him for his contribution to the auto industry as Ford himself did decades ago.

When I spoke of great inventors Carver was one of the ones I had in mind. I know he did miracles with peanuts but thanks for bringing me up to speed on his far-reaching contributions.

May (I think) is Asian Culture & History month. There's also a Hispanic History month, but I don't know when it is.

People only make a big deal of Black History Month, because that's the only one they have a problem with.

Also, keep in mind that to most children in school WORLD history means: England, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, France, Portugal....and that's about it. So, BLACK history month is kind of like a sore thumb in an OTHERWISE OKAY lesson plan.

I'm all for "Black History" happening 365 days a year. Until that happens, however, I will keep my 28 days. Whoever has a problem with it is welcome to sit it out. It's the shortest month, afterall.

Morgan Freeman,Bill Cosby, Larry Elder, Ward Connerly and Clarence Thomas. They all represent the Black Upperclass that make more than $6,000,000 a year and complain about how lower-class blacks are making them look bad. Morgan Freeman said that one-way to stop racism is stop talking about it. Like ignoring a problem has ever made it go away. I suppose that if black people like Martin Luther King just stop talking about racism then we would be so much better of "rolleyes". Black people need black history month to make them feel that they are worth something in a society that constantly tells them that they are inferior. Is it wrong? I don't know. But I think that black people like Morgan Freeman need to step outside of their $50,000,000 mansions and see what is really going on in the black community. And stop getting their false information about black people based on the white racist media.

Aaron Sailor --

"Black people need black history month"

Got any poll results to support that? Sounds like an opinion to me.

I do not believe Morgan Freeman was saying all that. He was saying why relegate balck people's history to one month and disrespect them the rest of the year. It was more like saying live your history daily and stop relying on 'the man' to provide a month for you to sit back and be lauded!
