Been meaning to ask about this! I have seen a couple of African people with English last names! Is this common or at least somewhat REGULAR in Africa?

Take for example the artist Rhian Benson, her mother is Britsh and her dad is Ashanti (Ghanian) and yet her last name is "Benson". Something which sounds very "American" to me.

What gives?

I met another girl at work who's friend told me her PARENTS where from Liberia. Her last name is "Harris". At first I'm assuming she changed it, or that maybe her dad was American or even American-Libero. But now I'm unsure after seeing this again.......

Someone please explain!

In Colonized nations....Africans took the names of the people they were employed by.

Just like the JEWS in America did---to gain employment. Notice most Jewish entertainers used to Angloize their last names.

You will find MANY Africans (the Pogo niggers) who have British or French or Russian last names.

Some of them maintain both their Colonial Name and their African name.

Joseph York = Yosef Yambi

Abraham Cane = Ibrahim Kadu

**My birth mother's name "Jiddi" is pronounced "Jenny" by many Sudanese----at market or in school or gov. buildings.

Afro American:

Liberia was settled by many repatriated slaves from America after the Civil War. They had by then taken European names. Most of those Liberians with those names I believe were descended from them.

By the way, those repatriated blacks formed an upper class (aided and abetted by the rubber companies that used them to rule the place) that treated the indigenous people in a beastly manner.

A few years ago they rose up and slaughtered and deposed them.

chrishayden,

I was aware of the Americican Liberians and a bit about their histories. That is why at first I ASSUMED this girl was a descendent (or at least partical) descended of some of these people.

However, I've seen these 'Anglo' names on other African people who were not from Liberia. For example the singer I posted, her dad was from GHANA and yet her last name is BENSON!

Benson does NOT sound like a indengious Ghanian name!

Africans all over Africa have European last names....and first names.

Look at "Miriam" Makeba. "Nelson" Mandela

"Winnie}....which is like Muffy.

It comes from Colonialism and Slavery.

And the fact that we have "Pogo niggers" just like you have "niggerstock"------people who identify with the WHITE MASTER race and hate their own identity.

Self-hatred is a WorldWide BLACK THING.

Some Africans think a European name make them sound more distinguished.

I have to give the Black American credit---at least you just plain don't know what your African mother's name was and have no idea what your tribal first names would be. You have a legitimate excuse.

Africans on the continent have NO EXCUSE.

I recommend Dr. Molefi Asante's African Book of Names -- I named my children from it.

Colonialism and Christianity made the African into a new person who would willingly give up his land, etc to the ruling powers. The changing of last name (first being a christian name) is practiced most in old portugese colonies of Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, etc. The Assimilado mentality (what KOLA would call pogo-nigger mentality) promoted self-hate and made Africans into useless Africans with no confidence in themselves. These days Africans in Africa want to be seen as African Americans. They will change their names, the way they talk, walk, dress to make others think that they are AA.
