I hate the strip and think of McGruder as one of the pinultimate "militant talking" Colorists in America.
If you love black people so much---how can the WOMB of black people never ever be represented in his work.
I've never seen a BLACK woman/girl in his work. EVER.
He promotes the same "blacks must become mixed" IMAGES that music videos do.
The same "cool" asshole nigger child with a grudge against the establishment.
Yet he fancies himself some outspoken militant social head.
Aaron McGruder SUCKS ASS.

Ah you haven't been reading McGruder--the last few weeks he has featured a family of evacuees from New Orleans--a man, his wife (who is also pregnant) and a little girl.
Also he and Reggie Hudlin did a graphic novel "The Birth of a Nation" that was set in East St. Louis and featured several major female characters.

I love McGruder. Its a damn shame when the only black with major exposure who is speaking out on current issues is a cartoonist.

Chris,
My kids like McGruder's comic books and they have all his stuff, but I'm still convinced that he's colorstruck and I don't like him.
Tokens don't count to me. And his females are usually all "Light skinned" except for the "Grandma" image-----yet he castigates white people and talks so Pro-black.
Since the majority of Black females are BLACK--why can't we portray that?
Nothing you say will erase the VISUAL day to day facts. It's normal to you, because that's the way things have always been. You don't even know what I'm bitching about.
But I don't have to like people who don't like me.

Again, you haven't been reading the strips yourself, especially recently.
As a black person you should be slow to condemn another black until you have all the facts. |

Kola,
Do you talk to your boys about your insights on the material? Are they at an age where they're understanding your concerns? I don't follow comics...including this one, so I'm only slightly familiar with it and its creator. However, I do know from watching a brief interview some years ago that McGruder himself is mixed; so, most likely, he's going to be biased that way. |

Yes---Thomas and I both raise our sons to be accutely sensitive to this, but we don't tell them NOT TO do certain things (ie. We would never say---"don't marry a white woman"). We have other tactics that are far more effective without the boys realizing they're being "brainwashed" counter culture.
What is normal behavior/thinking to most Black children.....is totally abnormal to our children, and they realize that as young black men--the culture is out to poison their brains, thus bringing on self-destruction.
But, I don't see the McGruder comics as potentially harmful to them. I like the POLITICAL slant of the cartoon.
The comic just hurts my feelings, because it perports to be so "Pro-black" and "conscious", yet for so many years, the female characters all looked like white women and all the males looked like brown mixed people--but my sons realize that this is a colorist society; so they enjoy the cartoon the same way they would enjoy a WHITE comic strip.
Luckily, their father does most of their training about "colorism"---and it's far more effective coming from a male, as they are VERY sensitive to "enemy" images and daily run up to me to report some example of it that they witnessed.

McGruder's "recent" turn around is BECAUSE OF the complaints like people like me. And after a decade of reading his strip daily in the Los Angeles Times----I know exactly what I'm talking about. He's always exlcuded one main person from the black race from his comics. And throwing in an occasional Fat Mammy grandmother or evil school teacher doesn't count. Those are still STEREOTYPES even when black artists resort to them.
The little "black girl" in the strip is damned near white---effectively removing our way back into the world. The constant image of which promotes the very white supremacy that he claims to abhorr.
If we are "BLACK" people---then the black WOMAN should be our feminine representative.
Like I said, I don't have to like somebody who doesn't like me. And his ignorant comments about Condoleeza Rice's sexuality expounded on what he really thinks of women in general.
I may disagree with her politics and AGREE with McGruder's politics (which I basically do)---but he was DEAD WRONG to bring up her sexuality in relation to her "job".

I like McGruders comics. I got an email from him when I was first building the web site. Aaron complained about not being in the cartonists section. I checked out his work and I was like yo' this kid is funny. I put up the following page http://authors.aalbc.com/aaron.htm.
I got the first two books he published in the mail from his publisher. I purchased the third one -- by then my youngest (about 8 or 9 at the time) was really into his stuff.
The biggest problem most people have with McGruder and -- I get plenty of email intended for him -- is that he is taken far too seriously. Actually I'm beggining to think McGruder is also guilty of this too.
Mcgruder is talented and funny (in a radical, angry sort of way). Maybe when he has lived a little or even raised a family I might be more interested in his opinion.
A lot of people get really bent out of shape over his cartoons. Actually I'd perfer if he did not have his little niggaz use the word "n" word on the TV show. But hey that would be like getting a rap artist or a klansman not to use it.

And R. Kelly, with all his genius talent, is still a Child Molester who the Black Community KNOWS is a child molester and fully support and protect.

I went to high school with R. Kelly. Actually I was in the 8th grade when he was SUPPOSED to graduate (I was in a lil Doogie Howser smart ass program). He can SANG but he is SICK!
I saw him in Atlanta when I was like 20 and he was just starting to get famous. He remembered me. I found it odd that he remembered a girl he last saw when she was 13 but chalked it up to the fact that he visited our school often and I was in the choir his "godmother" directed. Then after the allegations I let out a big ewwwwwwww.
It pisses me off (no pun intended) that so many people in Chicago blindly support him. I saw that tape. It was SO him. I'd know his ashy self anywhere! And people blamed the girls. That really got me heated!
But I digress (as usual ;-) ) I caught the Boondocks cartoon and died laughing. A gay rapper named Gangstalicious! Too much. Never paid the other stuff much mind (not into comics much) Have to think about it and actually read the strip and stuff.
And yes, this post is hella late, but I'm a newbie.

I love Aaron McGruder and the Boondocks. I've been reading his work since his days at University of Maryland. Maybe because the area where he grew up, Columbia, was well known to be a haven for the "mixed family"... it has never bothered me that he doesn't have an abundance of dark beauties in his works. His humor is pointedly about other issues so it works for me.
To each his own. Rather than knock the brother's hustle -- I'd like to see someone else rise up and offer another point of view in a similar line of work. When we have only one artist doing a thing on a grand scale, its easier to throw stones about what isn't being covered, rather than focus on raising up another artist.
