I loved the news anchor Peter Jennings.
Out of the men, he, Ed Gordon and Ted Coppel are/were my favorites. Out of the women...I confess... I love Katie Couric and don't like Diane Sawyer (for interviews with Whitney and Alice Walker). Anyway...let's send up prayers for Peter Jennings. ______________
THE WORLD...and PETER JENNINGS Peter Jennings was the chief anchor of ABC-TV's World News Tonight from 1983 until shortly before his death in 2005. For many of those years he has went head-to-head with two other longstanding network anchors, NBC's Tom Brokaw and CBS's Dan Rather. A Canadian by birth, Jennings was known for his dry, understated delivery and for his international outlook, honed by years as a foreign correspondent. Jennings also anchored the ABC evening news from 1965-67, which at the time made him the youngest network anchor in TV history. After a long period in other roles, he was named the sole anchor of World News Tonight in 1983. Jennings announced in April of 2005 that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer, but would continue to work as much as possible. He never returned to the air, passing away four months later. According to ABC, "A former smoker who quit 20 years ago, Jennings resumed smoking briefly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks"... Jennings became a U.S. citizen in 2003... At age nine Jennings hosted a Canadian radio show for kids called Peter's People. I LOVE THIS PICTURE!!

Kola, Peter Jennings did seemed like a very graceful and stately man, but in still a very masculine (i.e., non-GAY) way. The media will sorely miss his professionalism, presence and aplomb. GODSPEED onto your reward, Peter! PS: By the look of the woman's (wife?) bustline, one can see why ol' Pete's a SMILING. HAHAHA!!! |

Kola, Yeah. He does look like he's tied-on one something fierce. She probably had flash him those abounding boobies of hers to jar him from his stupor just long enough to take the picture. Oh. I've been hither and thither. |

He was my favorite news anchor too. He had a very crisp, clear and deep voice and everything he said was always straight to the point. I've been missing him ever since people were coming into work for him while he was sick. For those of you that smoke, please quit because you can live longer and happier. |

WOW!!! I'm watching ABC's presentation of Peter Jennings and I'm learning that Peter never graduated from high school. I'm trying to figure out how Peter Jennings, THE BEST JOURNALIST/ANCHOR/NEWS MAN/REPORTER, never finished school. Is that really possible? can you be a journalist without having gratuated high school? It doesn't matter how he got there because I think he was the very best, But I quess I'm just surprised that he made it that far without a high school diploma, amazing. Tonya |

Tonya, Well, you got to know that +40 years ago, journalism did not have the relative esteem that it has now. It was considered more a trade than a profession. The majority of reporters and columnists did not have college degrees. Thus, it was probably not very difficult for an editor to rationalize hiring an otherwise talented journalist who just happens to have not graduated high school. I agree that today it would be MUCH more difficult to enter and ascend the ranks of journalism via the route Jennings took. However, with the advent of the Internet, myriad information databases and inexpensive personal computing and desktop publishing systems, it might actually be EASIER to become a journalist sans a high school diploma NOW than it was than, say, 15 years ago. Of course, such a person would HAVE to be the smartest, hardest working, best prepared and most efficient of ALL his or her peers, which is by his longtime ABC colleague Barbara Walters recounting, what Jennings was. Again, the Peter Jennings' passing is a staggering lost to the profession (& trade) of journalism. |

Kola, I miss posting here, lol.. It was childish of me to leave. I'm coming back, but I'll also be more careful of what I say... Ummm, I meant to respond to Tonya's comment about Peter Jennings not going to school and being that famous of an anchor. I meant to tell her that you're like that too. I think some of us are just born with the will and ability to do something and don't need a degree for it. Usually, if it's something someone really want, it does not take a diploma to be one. Heck, some people have college degrees and have no knowledge of what they went to school for whatsoever. Kola, I admire you and Jennings for going after your love with such passion and integrity. |

AfricanQueen, I love you so much and I love having you around. I'm so glad you came back. You're a brilliant pretty girl. I wish I had a daughter like you---not that my sons aren't heaven sent (they definitely are the finest boys a mom could want). I feel blessed to hear from young black queens like you and Roxie and other young'ns.
