Yvette, girl, you win on that procrastination thing. And you might as well be a crack dealer: I am a TRIVIA JUNKIE! But I haven't heard all the versions on the above, so I can't answer this one. But I look forward to playing (as I am so busy writing these reviews...NOT!). |

LOOOL No. "Faye Dunaway" was the very first BEST ACTRESS winner a the NAACP IMAGE AWARDS. I always remembered that in a book about "Black History Trivia" and so I used it here. Cicely Tyson won for "Sounder" the next year.

Side Note: When Faye Dunaway won---which was the NAACP's "PLOY" to get publicity and t.v. coverage for their very first IMAGE award-----there was a lot of outrage that Diana Sands didn't get it for "The Landlord". James Baldwin raised a stink about Dunaway getting it and this was 1970---the height of the Black Power Movement. That same year, James Earl Jones got BEST ACTOR for his film "Great White Hope", in which his character was in love with a white woman. YEARS LATER----when Steven Spielberg was given the LIFE ACHIEVEMENT award by the NAACP IMAGE AWARDS....they showed clips from all Spielberg's films....but NOT A SINGLE CLIP from his black movie blockbuster "The Color Purple". Diana Ross presented him with the award and in his acceptance speech---Spielberg didn't mention Quincy Jones or Alice Walker or "Color Purple". He later said that the reason was..... ....the NAACP asked him not to. <wink>

Hey Mahogany. I'm not sure. It WAS NOT "Bonnie and Clyde". It may have been the one she did with Diahann Carroll (they were both nominated) and Jane Fonda. Beah Richards was in that too. "HURRY SUNDOWN" was the name of it. I loved how Diahann Carroll spoke her mind in that movie and looked better than every woman in the picture. To me, Diahann was the "shit" in that movie. But it was Jane Fonda's film.

People think I'm gay, too, because I have lot gay women friends and I "can be" androgyny looking, but I am stictly dickly, Men Only. --------- ABM--- Monique is NOT ugly at all to me. She is beautiful and makes fat look good. IMO Old Dirty Bastard, didn't he die? --------------- Mahogany, it look like Whitney Houston will be the flame out. I die inside that I can't save her. I lov e me some Whitney. Especially when she was cussing people out and scaring the shit out of that Diane Sawyer on interview. I loved it! I wish more black women in America would go off on these fuckers. I would be right there to back them up. Who is UGLY to me? Michael Jackson is the worst I can think of off hand.

Kola, I can't STAND Monique. But, hey, maybe it's just me. You know good-n-d*mn-well the whole Bert/Ernie thing had gay smoke signals hovering all over it. PS: I had a friend in high school whom was alleged to be gay. She would VEHEMENTLY proclaim she was straight. I believed her because 1) She was nice too me and 2) (More importantly) She was finer than I mofo and I was hoping she chose me to prove how straight she was well. Well, after high school and I had gone off to college, I ran into her on the street...she had "Meshell Ndegeocello" written all over her. |

Good morning, everybody? Next question: [Category: Popular culture] "Urban legend" that is most likely to be true: (a) Having survived a horrific storm, a slave trader promptly gave up his livelihood, became a Christian, and penned the hymn 'Amazing Grace' in thanksgiving. (b) The youngest mother on record was a five-year-old Peruvian girl. (c) In the "dueling pianos" scene of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Donald Duck calls Daffy Duck a 'nigger.' You win, Cynique! From Snopes.com: Claim: The youngest mother on record was a five-year-old Peruvian girl. Status: True. Origins: Although we can see a tremendous amount of variety in the plant and animal life all around us — both within and between species — many of us still find extremes in variety among human beings somewhat disconcerting. While an extraordinarily large dog or a cat with an unusually long tail may be regarded as nothing more than a momentarily interesting curiosity or a source of amusement, people who exhibit one of the extremes in human development — whether it be in intelligence, height, weight, or some other feature — have long struggled to avoid being identified as "freaks." Perhaps the most discomfiting record of this nature involves the youngest person ever to give birth, reputedly a five-year-old girl — not only because such a record posits that a child barely of kindergarten age (presumably involuntarily) underwent an experience we associate with physical and psychological maturity, but also because it implies the commission of an act now considered to be nothing less than child molestation. Regardless of our squeamishness, we have to note that the claim of a five-year-old girl giving birth is apparently true. Her name was Lina Medina, a Peruvian girl from the Andean village of Ticrapo who made medical history when she gave birth to a boy by caesarean section in May 1939 at the age of five years, seven months and 21 days. Lina's parents initially thought their daughter had a large abdominal tumor, but after they took her to a hospital in the town of Pisco physicians confirmed that her abdominal swelling was due to pregnancy. Linda was eventually transferred to a hospital in Lima, where she delivered a six-pound baby boy by Cesarean section on 14 May 1939 (coincidentally the date on which Mother's Day was celebrated that year). Lina's father was temporarily jailed on suspicion of incest, but he was released for a lack of evidence and authorities were never able to determine who fathered Lina's child... Now ask a question, Cynique.

Gosh, Yvette. As much as I disagree with Condi Rice's politics (and I do agree she's a sellout)....I don't see her as a new age Aunt Jemima. I think black men have taken over the Aunt Jemima role--Ving Rhames being a good example of one (did you see when he gave his Golden Globe Award to Jack Lemmon? LOL--Spike Lee parodied the Rhames giv'n his award to Massa speech in the film "Bamboozled"). And that politician who ran against Barack Obama being another good example. Oh---and Desmond Tutu and half the rappers are Aunt Jemima incarnate. Reuben Studdard is Aunt Jemima. That's how he won American Idol. |

I think Condi Rice is too "sinister" and too "deliberate" to be seen as Aunt Jemima (who had a heart of GOLD). Condi is more like a scheming house wench---or a diabolical Queen. I hate to say this, but Cleopatra was VERY MUCH like Condi Rice in her day---remember Caesar's intermarriage law that Cleopatra enforced and ended up giving Egypt over to the Roman Empire. Of course--only Africans see it this way. Whites portray her as some glamorous "one of them". If Condi reminds me of anyone, it's Africa's ultimate sell-out......Cleopatra.

NOPE. It was "The BodyGuard" , director Lawrence Kasdan's very first screenplay, that was written for Diana Ross and Ryan O'Neal in 1978, but no studio would finance it in the 1970's, so they put it on the shelf. Kevin Costner wanted to make a movie with Whitney Houston, so he optioned the script in the 1980's. By the time they began to film it in 1992, Whitney Houston's people had the script changed so that her character was not from the Ghetto and no reference whatsoever was made to the two characters being of a different "race". Robert DeNiro, at the very same time, tried to get Whitney Houston to co-star with him in a remake of Doris Day and James Cagney's film "Love Me Or Leave Me", but she declined to star in it because DeNiro had been sending her flowers for over a year and made it clear he was romantically interested in her. Whitney chose to do Kevin's project instead.

Oh Phooey, Slow Poke. I didn't get a chance to answer your quiz because I knew that Diana Ross originally was the one who had plans for The Body Guard. She also wanted to make the Josephine Baker story, but Lynn Whitfield beat her to that with a TV version of this biography. |

Hey Cynique. Had gall stone surgery. Been staring at the little buggers in a jar for two days. My daughter graduates from Spelman this spring. Just wanted to tell you that my middle sister went to the University in Champagne Illinois where you went. Ernestine Banks. She became a teacher. I didn't go. Straight to the army for me, my choice and no regrets. We were out of Cleveland.

Kola, I was exagerrating about the Condi "Freudian slip": This was a rumor--oft repeated--that was reported in a column in the Wash Post a year or so ago, and also mentioned by Patricia Williams in her new book. I think it happened at a dinner party, and it's not entirely clear if she did, indeed, misspeak or if some folks misheard... I never heard any closure on that story. It has been elevated to an urban legend that fits too nicely with the image some of us (OK, just me) have about her and her boss... As for Condoleeza Rice, she and Fitty-Cents, are my choice for twins separated at birth. Not only do they both have ferret faces with toothy grins, but they both like to play with fire, and are good at rappin about nothin. LOL! Classic! Betcha Sec. Rice spend 9 months in a womb/room w/Fitty and she'll be rappin a brand new tune! Anyhoo... Trip about the Bodyguard--I did not know that. |

Who’s gotten the most of the least discernable talent? 1) Beyonce 2) Tom Cruise 3) P. Diddy 4) Howard Stern 5) George W. Bush My pick: Bush. The GOP can talk their *$$ off. But everybody knows that if he had ‘summered’ in the foothills of Appalachia instead of Kennebunkport, MA, this dude would be barely holding down a gig busing tables at Denny’s. |

Good call on Hilton. As mediocre as I find Beyonce to be, if I were to redo the selections I'd swap her for Hilton. I disagree about P.Diddy though. Cause I'll bet even Combs could conjugate verbs better than our current Hick-n-Chief. |

Frank Sinatra, hands down. He's was a Sicilian and Sicily is around Africa. Sinatra had that same indefinable quality of hipness that graced the aura of black musicians. Even today Sinatra's body of work still swings, and he was always praised for having a built-in metronone that made his timing perfect. And as the head of the legendary Rat Pack, he epitomized "cool." |

No Anonymous. I'm saying that Bette Davis was one of the coolest White Celebrities EVER. I think Sean Connery was cooler and more manly and more suave than BOGART or Sinatra or any of those guys. And for the women---Bette Davis was just off the fucking chain. I couldn't BELIEVE a white woman had all that "fire and music" in one combustible glance. The body movements...eye movements...the sheer AUDACITY and NERVE and WIT. Did you see "Of Human Bondage"? "Now Voyager", "The Old Maid", "Jezebel", "Dark Victory", "All About Eve" And my favorite....the one where she played "Rosa Maline"!!! That's one White woman who could look at you as ONLY a Black Woman can!!!!! Bette Davis was the shit. I love her. As I become less pretty and less youthful....I'm studying to develop more of a Bette Davis persona. GONE BETTE!!! |

I never thought of Bette Davis as being "cool." She was up-tight, edgy, and aggressive. Cool? No. Lauren Bahcall was more laid back and cool than Betty, and Lauren's cool persona was enhanced by her sultry looks.

But remember. BECAUSE OF "Bette Davis"....people called Lauren Bacall "Betty". LOL And the song "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes said it all. Also, Great Mother....you're describing a different kind of "Cool" than what ABM suggested. You're talking about a "cool attitude, etc." He spoke of white celebrities embodying some template usually associated with Blackness. I maintain that while MANY WHITE WOMEN played the " fabulous, multi-faceted, enigmatic and melodramatic bitch character" on screen.....BETTE DAVIS, because she had so much of a black woman's "Audacious Wit" and "Body Gestures".....ruled the Movie Screen (her films combined outgrossed Marilyn Monroe's films combined--TWICE OVER)....because Bette plugged into a "nuance" of Black Shitty Attitude that no other White Actress dared emulate. And of course....they would NEVER a Black Woman play those type of roles onscreen, even today. If a black woman has to be powerful, conniving and self-absorbed...she's a one note Omarosa type bitch...not multi-layered like Bette Davis or Kola Boof (Wink). Also, Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield were more like "Black Women"--in build and gestures, too, if you really wanna get down to it. But as James Baldwin said, not even the black community itself will allow a Coke-bottle shaped chocolate skinned beauty to be portrayed as voluptuous Man-Candy. So Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield did what Pat Boone and Jerry Lee Lewis did for rock--mimicked the body and movements of the real thing. And not even Eartha Kitt....truth be told....was able to embody the REAL cocoa-figured black Mandingo sex kittens that Pam Grier, Naomi Campbell, Lola Folana and so many West African women really do look like.

To me, cool is cool, and it transcends color. Bette Davis was a melodramatic bitch; very hyper and in-your-face. Anybody who acts that way, no matter what her color, is not "cool." My idea of cool embodies a hint of aloofnes and mystery, and the ability to take things in your stride, and to exhibit grace under pressure. And, I always thought Eartha Kitt was a caricature of what being "sexy" was all about but, then, that's a different category. |

Ladies, I always thought Sinatra was overrated in the cool department. Though I listed him as I nominee, I actually think Dean Martin was cooler. In fact, if you think about it, Sinatra didn't really appear especially jake til he surrounded himself with Sammy, Dino, JFK and the mob. When he appeared in movies with guys like Burt Lancaster, Marlon Brando and Gene Kelley, he often looked like a malnourished weasel. Those other guys are cool. Connery's better looking, manlier than Boogie. But, somehow, I think if all these guys were in some outfit together, they'd ALL be looking to Boogie to figure out that they should be doing. I guess it's because whenever I think of Boogie, I recall his 'Rick' outsmarting the Nazi and macking on Ingrid Bergman's 'Ilsa' in "Casablanca". "If you play it for her, you can play it for me...Sam." I agree Monroe, Mansfield, Jane Russell and the like where 'channeling' Black sistahood. And they weren't too bad at it either. Though, 'taint NOTHING like the REALLY thing. I agree that Lauren Bacall is the coolest of the White chicks. There were plenty who were prettier/sexier. But that chick had a voice so ice-cold, it could make icicles on the sun. Apparently, you ladies have forgiven Connery for the comments he made on a Barbara Walter interview where he said sometimes a man's gottah smack a chick on her 'arse' a lil' bit to straighten her out. I guess being 007 does have its 'privileges'. |

Ohhh no no, not at all. I already knew about that--I think the undercover gay thing is what is especially appealing to me for some reason. I don't know: The thought that he'd look gosh darn good on my arm in the evening, and "help [me] pick out [my] clothes before we go out" (to paraphrase Prince, another gender bender who I also adore)... Plus I love Hitchcock movies and I especially love the ones he was in. My second pick would have been Sean, though. "Shaken, not stirred" I guess regarding the slap-up stuff. LOL

More regarding the down low stuff: I heard somewhere that him and his "man friends" would always go out on dates with a third man--Nothing kinky, just that if three men were out to lunch or to dinner, dressed formally, carrying briefcases and whatnot, to all appearances they'd just be three dapper businessmen closing a deal. |

Sisgal, I never really care for Bette Davis films in her "old age" years. I'm talking about Bette Davis in her heydey.... the 1930's, 40's and early 50's.....11 Best Actress Oscar Nominations and 2 Best Actress Wins....and SHE WAS far more intricate and complicated in her films than what Cynique described. BETTE DAVIS...was da BOMB:
FAMOUS Bette Davis "lines": "I'd love to kiss you...but I just washed my hair."
"FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS...it's going to be a bumpy night." "What a dump!" "Aren't we all a bunch of busy little bees?" "I used to...WIPE....MY...MOUTH!" "But 'choo are, Blanche....YOU ARE!"
And my all time personal favorite. "Don't lets ask for the Moon....when we have the stars." OH. WHAT LOVE STORY!!! ________________________________________ NOW. I've been dying to ask this for years...but only ABM will care. Please tell me "WHY" the New York Times and other media keep claiming that I'm the AFRICAN VERSION of this woman???
ABM...and whoever cares I love GRETA GARBO....but I don't get it. Is this an "AMerican" inside joke thing?? What is it? Are we both androgynous looking as someone told me??? (meaning--we look masculine but pretty at the same time). That's what a Black Scholar told me. The New York Times claimed I was "mysterious"---they even titled their article "MYSTERY ENSHROUDS KOLA BOOF". But how can I be mysterious----I'm posting on the goddamned internet everyday.

Kola: Garbo was famous for being a recluse as much as anything else (imo). Maybe because you are/were under government protection (which people take to mean "in hiding"), they make the comparison. ABM: We didn't call it "Doctor." We called it playing "Mama and Daddy." Maybe it was a Southern thang... We also used to play "The Jeffersons" and I invariably got stuck playing Weezie. Abm, you're right, Sinatra really didn't really come into his own as a cool dude till he mellowed out in middle age. And while we're on the subject of coolness, my guy Viggo comes across as very cool in both "G.I. Jane" and "A Perfect Murder." He's cool in person, too. Of course, I would know this because we chill out together. heh-heh. Anyhoooo, as for Orlando Bloom, he has really made it big since his LOTR debut, but there are rumors about his sexual preference, too. Cary Grant was probably bi-sexual because in several biographies, it was revealed how he fell like a ton of bricks for Sophia Loren, but she wouldn't leave her husband for him. MAH, the best I can do with your stumpers is to say that I know James Earl Jones was a stuttered and I think Carly Simon was, too. I also think I remember reading that Churchill was dyslexic. |

Cynique, Funny. My wife was recently waxing rapsodically about you beloved Viggo. Kinda pissed me off. But that's cool though. 'Cause I'll make her 'pay' for it...later. Mah, Helen was cool. But her daughter Jenny was kind-of-a nutcase. I guess it was the whole biracial-thing. |

Well, it's always been rumored that Garbo was a lesbo....... And all of Bette Davis' biographies portray her as being as intense in person as she was on screen. True Ms Davis was a fascinating actress, but what she respired with was fire, not ice. |

Garbo certainly WAS a lesbian. People think that about me, too. I think because of how I portray women's sexuality in my books----they think I'm trying to hint that I'm like that. Truth is...I'm just trying to cater to one segment of my base. It recently dawned on me that because ABM's reading "Flesh and the Devil"---that's why he thought I'm gay. YVETTE: I have a kind of dyslexia where TOO MUCH thinking at once.....makes me need a vodka. JK Sorry, I just get frustrated at questions that huge.

Kola, I was only joking about the lesbian thing. If anything, I was only referencing to what YOU have frequently mentioned that others suspect about you. If you tell me you're straight, I'll believe your straight. If you tell me your gay, I'll believe you're gay. And if you tell me you're bi, then I'll begruge the guys you date. |

You're such a pig!!!!! LOL I'm not bisexual. I'm totally into Dick-worship, maintenance and exploration. But I do have a very strong intimacy with other women and I've always WANTED to be gay (to escape obsessing over men).....but to take it to a physical level, I just can't do it and I've had MANY opportunities. I have been in the bed with a man and another girl before---but we girls didn't have sex. We just touched each other's breasts (to turn on the guy) and sexed the guy.

We need to define the term "cool". All but one of the people on the cool fat list are dead, so they really are cold. Anyway, I'd go with Biggie Smalls. I'm a sucker for people whose names are oxymorons. As for the lucky sperm society, hummmm. I can't decide. I think all of them except Michael Douglas qualify for this distinction. Mike pretty much reached the top on his own, and has actually exceeded his father in status because he directs, produces, and acts and has won 2 Oscars. BTW, I was discussing the cool white guy list with my husband last night and he wondered how we could've overlooked Robert Mitchum. I'd agree that Mitchum was someone who never lost his cool. |

Cynique, I agree about Michael Douglas. I think he’s long since gotten past being the male eye-candy next to Karl Malden in the ‘70’s “The Streets of San Francisco”. All, Who’s the best active Black actor? 1) Don Cheadle 2) Denzel Washington 3) Morgan Freeman 4) Jeffery Wright 5) Mos Def My pick: Jeffery Wright. No dis to the other brothahs, but this one ain't even close. Wright is a BETTER actor even than DeNiro has been given credit for. If Jeffery were White, Hollywood would have long since proclaimed him the heir apparent to Marlon Brando. Wright is so convincingly versatile that he could play a heartbroken lesbian Eskimo and make chicks on "The L-Word" shiver and weep. |

ABM, I was torn between Cheadle and Wright on this one, because I do love myself some Don Cheadle. But I've got to agree and give it to Wright. His extraordinary versatility and his acute ability to transcend each and every role to unfathomable levels, plus the fact that he makes me shiver, gives him a leg up on all the others. |

If Jeffrey Wright were "dark skinned"---he would be cast A LOT MORE than he is now. Colorism stops him from playing the meaty roles (especially from starring), because THE PLAYING FIELD IS NOT EVEN....and Black America itself perpetuates the racist injustice that if a man is very light---he's not MAN ENOUGH (they almost regard him as "pretty" or even "gay"). The same colorist bullshit that dictates that our real mother, the AUTHENTIC Black Woman, should perish from the earth---because only MALES should be chocolate and nappy-haired (as if one can exist without the other). That's what we LEARNT after 400 years in white people's church. _______________ Other BRILLIANT light skinned MALE actors whose careers have been derailed by colorism are Giancarlo Esposito and the guy who played Huey Newton (I love him!). But if they were FEMALE---then they would be superstars and colorism would BENEFIT them. |

Can we ever just discuss something without having a lecture about colorism. Jeeze! I'd go with Denzel. He has the looks; tall, masculine and toned-up. The talent; 2 Oscars. The versatility; now appearing in an off-broadway Shakespeare production. His career has had longevity and his body of work stands on its own. |

Denzel is splendid actor. But this Wright brothah quite literally ‘becomes’ someone else in almost every performance. Denzel, as fantastic as he is, often still is ‘Denzel’ in some of his roles. And I agree with Kola that there does appear to exist a weird sort of ‘reverse colorism’ factor with respect to Black male actors. How many very lightskinned brothahs are movie stars? Not many. With the exception of maybe Will Smith and Laurence Fishburne, Hollywood prefer its Black men…’Black’. And it’s always been that way, when you think about it. Even in those grainy 30’s – 40’s Black/White films, the brothahs were almost always dark (though, yes, the sistahs were almost always light). However, I suspect Wright hasn’t broken through to 'superstardom' via his own volition. He doesn’t appear to pursue the limelight, as he's seldom seen when he’s not on stage/screen. And maybe he wisely eschews getting caught up in Tinsel Town’s vacuous starmaking machine, which can fatten you bank account yet still your soul. |

What is the biggest reason why Blacks economically lag behind others? 1) We lack quality education. 2) White oppression. 3) We seldom draft and execute budgets and plans. 4) We are naturally lousy in math. 5) We are too materialistic. My pick: 3) lack budget/plan. The biggest reason why we fail as individuals, families and communities is we almost never create/work a detailed plan of how were going to achieve a desired state. Issues such as racism, faulty educational system and materialism are potent too. But those could more effectively addressed if we developed/worked a method of getting ahead. |

I do hear you , ABM. However, something about that theory has always irked me. I used to date a guy who was grom the "ghetto"--yet he managed to get a degree and a good job, maintain his late mother's home, and in general stay out of trouble--even thrive. Yet despite his best efforts he was constantly being called on to step in and "save" one of his family members: a sister whose baby-daddy didn't come through with pamper money, a cousin who needed to be bailed out of county lock-up, a brother whose car broke down and on and on. Now maybe in this case what he needed as part of his "budget and plan" was a "just say NO clause." But he was much too family oriented for that. In my department some faculty and grad students are doing research on these "savings plans" for poor folk--where the govt or some other entity will match some amount of money for every dollar they can save towards college, a business, or a house. Well, can you imagine what kind of college program, business or house you can afford when you start with a whole lotta nothing? I don't know. I think that the savings thing--the "now"/present orientation and the folk ideas about "you can't take it with you" are definitely a factor and I have seen it with my own family. But I think for the vast majority of folks who begin behind, no amount of planning is going to get them "ahead"--at least not much more than a couple steps. I could be pessimistic this morning, though. I just got back from a family funeral where I got a chance to see all this kind of drama play out first hand... |

OH. So my vote for an answer would be (6): 1,2,3,5, and so much more. I think what we have is a systemic and long-standing chronic problem and no amount of analysis will enable us to disentangle any one factor as THE "most important" or "main" one. |

Yvettep, HAHA and ditto on the "NO clause". You can't EVERYONE on a sinkin' ship. Especially if some of them refuse to attempt to swim on their own. But I don't think I clearly explained what I mean. It's not just about creating a budget. What's also required is a plan to move forward. Actually, the plan should drive the budget, not the reverse. Because when you know what you want to do, or a plan; you'll be better able to achieve it, which includes amongst other things, a sound budget. I know it's difficult to create/work plans/budgets when you're being overwhelmed by the relentlessness of life. But, maybe by talking a few moments and CRITICALLY reviewing your life, no matter how difficult it is, you may be able to tweak it just enough to BEGIN to transcend your circumstance. 'Course then you may have to make some painful decisions. And I think THAT is often why people eschew planning/budgeting. Hope your optimism grows as the moments go by. |

I think all of the possibilites listed can be traced to the one choice you didn't mention, ABM. And that is that single young black women have too many children that they can't provide for. The consequences of this behavior resonates throughout the underclasses and leaves its negative mark on all socio-economic and educational areas of the black populace at large and this includes law-enforcement. When welfare becomes your source of survival this puts you at a disadvantage and prevents you from being prudent in the financial sector. And yes, I know there are more white people on the public assistance rolls than black people, but the percentage of blacks on welfare in terms of their over-all numbers is much higher. And, yes, I know that many welfare recipients do a good job of budgeting their small incomes and yes, I know my continuing to harp on this "indiscriminant breeding" issue rubs people the wrong way, but - too bad. |

I sort of agree with you, Cynique. It's just plain common sense. Women shouldn't have children until they're more secure, more "wise" about life and I really am a big fan of how my mother raised us----"don't have your first baby until 25". For our particular community, I think that would help us TREMENDOUSLY, because the women would be better parents by them. I, however, understand the sociological reasons as to why young black girls feel so powerless and unloved and invisible and get "suckered" into thinking that BABIES will fill a vast emotional void. Then they RESENT the babies after they're here! So sad. I do think our community is extremely SEXIST and that we value "black boys" far more than girls, and consequently, our girls are under-developed as people. I've seen this. As Derrick Bell says, "We LOVE our sons, but we only raise our daughters." And once again----the darkest little girls, get the least attention/love from PARENTS, SCHOOL and CHURCH. |

Cynique, I agree teen pregnancy is a serious issue. But I view it as more a sympton of other issues (e.g., weak Black economic systems, absent fathers, over-worked mothers, etc). Also, over the last 15 years, the rates of both teen pregnancy and welfare, especially amongst Blacks, have fallen sharply. Yet our struggles worsen. Hey. You can carp all you want about "indiscriminant breeding". But the truth is the most natural, basic of all motivations are survival and procreation. You'll NEVER be able to 'legislate' control over that. Rather, you create an environment in which people are capable and inclined to make productive choices. Yvettep, My pick: a) microwave oven. Mainly because we haven't had one in years. Wife thinks they kill us. I don't know if I agree or not. But we've gotten by pretty well without it. And take it easy, Weezy. No need to be getting yur dander up. |

Well, ABM, I was answering the question you were posing about why black people lag behind whites economically. You claim teen-aged pregnancy is a symptom of the ills of white society, I contend that it is a condition that perpetuates the ills of black society and this includes ecomonic shortfall. Catch 22?

'Cynnique', Again, we differ. I would content the lack of an overall scheme of socio-economic development within the Black community creates the teen pregnancy issue, which then worsens an already troublesome situation. I believe if we had a strong economic system, fathers/mothers could more effectively work together to thwart teen pregnancy...largely because the teens would themselves be more motivated to and capable of competing for their place in the world. |

You and I are not talking about the same circumstances, ABM. In the inner-cities, teen-aged mothers are usually the daughters of teen-aged mothers because it is a lifestyle that perpetuates itself. When a teen-aged pregnancy accidently occurs in a middle-income family that is not lagging behind economically, if an abortion or adoption doesn't occur, the baby is raised by the grandparents as their own, and the girl usually gets on with her life and doesn't become a repeat "offender." |

'Cynnique', I grew up poor. So did all of our friends. Yet almost none of our mothers were teens when they birth us. And some of use even had our dads at home. Although my dad wasn't around much for my upbringing, my parents were +21 and married before I was born. And Black foks were struggling LONG before the term 'teen pregnancy' had even been coined. Again. Teen pregnancy is not a prime cause of our condition...it's a CONSEQUENCE of it. And until we recognize that, we'll continue to pour millions into ineffacious social programs that only distract us from real potential remedies for our problems. |

ABM, When I was growing up in S.E. Washington D.C.----every house on our block had a MOTHER and a FATHER, except ONE. All Black neighborhood except one Asian wife. All the fathers worked and we were relatively safe. Now...the block is totally destroyed, a terrible ghetto war zone. In just 20 short years, it's completely fallen apart. Crack, gangs and almost NONE of the KIDS from those married black couples EVER got married---including me.

Kola, Okay. But was all that devastation CAUSED by teenage pregnancy? I doubt it. I imagine there were an assortment of socio-economic ills that contributed to the problem: @ Good paying jobs that Blacks formerly got moved to China @ Crack cocaine @ Ultra harsh/bias drug laws @ Onerous law enforcement @ Biases in school funding, bank loans, personnel selection @ Crumbling housing stock and few homeowners @ Few and failing Black businesses THOSE more than a few girls getting pregnant is what has reap havoc upon our communities. |

No, ABM. I was agreeing with you. ________________ As for your list.....I truly believe that HIP HOP CULTURE (which is a way of "thinking"---a set of "moral values") REPLACED the thinking of set of values from the CIVIL RIGHTS CULTURE.....and that was our MAIN downfall. Hip Hop Culture's "values/thinking" ALLOWED all of the other crap to take root and to take precedence. Black Youth were not only wreckless and violent....but older Blacks DID NOTHING to curb or oppose them. If anything, it became a self-destructive Free For All.

Kola, You know what. I'm still 'young' enough to remember with hip-hop primarily a very POSITIVE artform. You mostly had poor Black and Puerto Rican kids who had NOTHING using whatever they could scrap together something - ANYTHING - to entertain themselves. So when I see/hear people complain about the EVILS of hip-hop, I think not some much about the problems it presents not, but rather its myriad lost opportunties.
PS: I've long held this theory that if music had been better funded and promoted in 1970's inner city high schools, hip-hop might never have happened. |

But ABM, you're talking about early "rap music"-----NOT HIP HOP "CULTURE"---which is much larger. And the "thinking" of Malcolm X really was replaced by the "thinking" of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The minute we went from----"Our mother is a Black Queen".....to......"Black women is Bitches and Ho's" which was VERY EARLY in hip hop....is the moment that EVERYTHING began to disintegrate. Because you're a MAN....you probably didn't notice the change over back then. But Black Women did. Big time. And because we were "black"----we were quickly labeled as "the black man's enemy". All so that he could enjoy his "white chicks"---his SPOILS from the Civil Rights victory. It's very tragic, because now the black man is on the brink of sealing his own fate FOREVER, because once you kill your own mother---you can NEVER come back from that. Just ask the North Africans. But they would never listen to a woman like me---who is RIGHT. Good elements or not---HIP HOP is a CANCER that encourages us to self-destruct and it empowers the WEAKEST of US while neutering the Strongest of Us ("I ain't try'n to hear dat").

Here in Chicago, yesterday's project-dwellers are today's black middle class because that generation came from poor hard-working stable family units that encouraged their children to better themselves. But this all changed in the early 50s and the project residents who came after the first wave, remained in the projects because they were migrants from a rural southern culture; a study of this phenomenon was made by a local black sociologist. Anyway, we may disagree on some points, but it can't be denied that you are hampering your economic progress when you are a young single mother bogged down with a bunch of kids with different absentee fathers. |

Kola, You're right about hip-hop. Still. It's kinda like observing someone who was once a productive citizen and good friend being ravaged by drugs. You still want to remember him before the fall. Cynique, I don't disagree with any of your premises. I think it the final argument you make that's flawed. Do you REALLY think if there were 0 teen pregnancies our problems would be substantively cured? I don't. I think we'd simply trade mishap for another. Because sick foks tend to come down with all kinds of ailments. Simply: I think many of those girls who are NOT getting pregnant (and their boyfriends) would be finding other trouble to get into. Ultimately, the only thing we (may be) disagreeing about is "Which came first: The chicken of the egg." |

ABM says: "Do you REALLY think if there were 0 teen pregnancies our problems would be substantively cured?" Cynique answers: Yes. Because as I keep saying this problem gives rise to a multitude of other problems. This surplus supply of undisiciplined kids in a neighborhood crowds the classrooms and influences the calibre of kids attending the schools, thereby making it harder to receive a good education. It also swells the ranks of the gangs that are a substitute family for fatherless boys, and these gangs foster the criminal activities that either kill or send thousands of young black men to jail. What does it say about this subject when DCFS is bursting at the seams with neglected, abused, unwanted, black children. |

Well, one thing's for sure: Since well educated, 30+ Black women have one of the LOWEST fertility rates of any age-income-race group, if it weren't for these young girls having babes the Black population would be much much lower. Would that be so bad if the Black kids that were being born were healthy, well cared for, well educated, etc? I guess so. But I fail to see why a large portion of these kids currently being born couldn't be healthier, better "parented" (broadly defined, by all the adults in their lives), and taught better. A combination of personal, policy, and community will could help. I don't find it helpful to call anyone's reproductive decision making "breeding"--"indiscriminant" or otherwise. They are having children, just as many of us have done or will do. If poverty were a contraindication for childbearing many of us writing on this board would not be here today.

Yvettep, WELL SAID and BRAVO! The age thing in particular is something all young upwardly mobile sistahs need to consider. Who's that who said "Jesus was born in a manger...not a mansion." (Think it was Jesse Jackson). The purest, most basic of human needs is reproduce. How could THAT in of itself be wrong? Again. I say the fault lies with our not crafting communities that allow people to make good decision about themselves, including but NOT limited to whom/how/when they SCREW. And, yeah, if being po' (and mostly fatherless) was an legitimate impediment to being born...MY @$$ sure as F@#$ wouldn't be here either. |

Well, folks, talk is cheap. And nobody seems to be putting their money where their mouth is, so the beat goes on, and for every child who is motivated and smart enough to make it out of the ghetto, 10 more remain behind and become baby's mamas and baby's daddies. Of course this is their right. And if they're satisfied with where this leads to, then more power to them; or should I say less power to them. Indeed, breeding is a natural instinct. But the human facility for being able to think should prompt people to consider the time and place to reproduce. In a perfect world. So, as somebody once said, "the rich get richer, and the poor get children." How 'bout that. |

OK, all you literary types, here's one: If you had to choose to be the author of only ONE major published book, which would you prefer? (a) To have written a widely popular book that made you wealthy, and that was widely agreed by critics and other "professional analysts" to be crap. (b) To have written a book that absolutely flopped, and that was widely hailed by critics and other "popular analysts." (c) To have written a book that largely no one reads, no critic hails or boos, and that significantly changes the life of one person (and which you never hear about in your lifetime). |

I think getting a blowjobs is definitely SEX. I don't see how people can say it's not SEX. As for Bill Clinton, however..... I never felt bothered that he was getting a blowjob in the oval office. I mean seriously, if Hilary wasn't upset, why should I be? Not to mention, it's none of business, and he was a DAMNED GOOD President. Why can't he get a blowjob? In my twenties while involved directly with the Egyptian, Sudanese and Libyan governments, I saw 13 year old girls draped naked (3 and 4 at a time) over the desks of the Presidents, Vice-Presidents and other rulers all the time. I saw young girls being butt-fucked over a ruler's desk by a visiting WHITE Politician or a visiting AFRICAN politician----during meetings. When foreign men arrive--they are handed young girls, to do with what they please. ALL DAY....everyday......Men patted my ass, felt on my body.......AS THEY WISHED (you just have to push their hand away, and they laugh and try again later)..... ....and I have every confidence that CONDALEEZA RICE has had her ass patted and pinched by dignitaries and political officials.....especially in ARAB countries or in ASIAN countries. I can guarantee you she has. In Arabia or Japan---you might as well expect it, because it's going to happen. |

Yvette: “ABM, you said it ("equivocating ho"); not me! LOL!” ABM: HAHA! I admit to being conservative about many issues. But I also think there are MANY socio-economic biases that I can’t ignore. I also think that many who call themselves conservative are really NOTHING of the sort. For example, I don’t think that waging wars in foreign lands for reasons other than national security is conservative. I don’t think giving BILLIONS in farm subsidies to multinational companies is conservative. I don’t think poking around in the bedrooms of grown people is conservative. I don’t think compelling atheists to acknowledge and recite “GOD” in public facilities is conservative. Basically, I think there's a HUGE difference between how conservatism is defined and how MANY it’s practiced. Thus my whorish equivocation...I suppose. Kola: “....and I have every confidence that CONDALEEZA RICE has had her ass patted and pinched by dignitaries and political officials.....especially in ARAB countries or in ASIAN countries. I can guarantee you she has.” ABM: Babe. That’s probably NOTHING compared to the stuff Condi’s had to do to GET the gigs she’s gotten to begin with. Multiple Choice Question: Which Black actor would be the best choice to portray a BLACK James Bond: A) Denzel Washington B) Terence Howard C) Michael Jai White D) Morris Chestnut E) Taye Diggs My pick: Howard. He seems to have the right mix of cool, smarts, toughness, sophistication and I-know-you-honies-love-me moxie to wield a convincing 007. |

Confessing ignorance (I don't watch much TV and don't see many movies unless it stars an animated character): Who's Terence Howard? Or, for that matter, Michael Jai White? The others I know, but none get my vote. I'd probably pick some brother with a nice accent of some sort, not an American...I think on it. |

Terrence Howard, hands down. Yvette, he was in "The Best Man", "Ray", "Lackawanna Blues " on HBO, "Crash", currently...and lots of other stuff. However, he had a terrible start on this terrible show with James Avery, Robin Givens, and Miguel Nunez..."Sparks" (on UPN, I think). Check him out: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005024/ I don't think this picture does him justice, though. |

ABM, all: What about Idris Elba? We don't have HBO, so I haven't seen his work on "The Wire." But I have seen him guest spot on other shows--most recently on a "Girlfriends" episode. He seems to be about the right age (mid 30s?), intense look with a wonderful smile, sexy, and... AN INCREDIBLE ACCENT! |

‘Vette, What I’ve seen/read about Howard suggest to me that he could with practice and training master an English accent. Moreover, I sense he'd only do it if his persona and performance appeared credible. White was the ‘hero’ in the “Spawn” movies. He also portrayed Mike Tyson in a TV movie about 8 – 10 years ago (He actually much better looking than Tyson.). I’ll admit White was sort of a throw-in. I saw and liked him in a movie recently, so I guess I was subconsciously compelled to include’em. Idris Elba may indeed be an interesting pick. I liked him in HBO recently released “Sometimes in April” (Rawandian genocide). His seemed a very strong, dignified and earnest portrayal of survival. But I’ve seldom watched The Wire and haven’t seen him appear in much else. Perhaps if I had, I might have included him as a candidate. |

Yvette is downright giddy right now because: (a) She spent 20 minutes under the dryer at the hair salon gazing at pictures of Idris Elba in Savoy magazine. (b) She scored 97% Democrat on the "Are you a Republican" quiz. (c) She just found out she has been awarded a University of Minnesota dissertation fellowship for next year and now can stop practicing her "Well, it was an honor just to have been nominated" speech. |
