Neal Boortz (White Shock jock) says that Congresswoman Cynthia McInny looks like a "ghetto slut" and that her hair is "like an explosion at a brillo pad factory".

Listen to the clip: http://mediamatters.org/items/200603310005

My question is:
1. Why does he still have a job?
2. Are we seeing in this country an insidious regression in the civil rights gains made when this racist jargon can be SAID ON AIR (about a member of congress) and PUBLICIZED without outcry or objection

More and more I'm becoming frightened in this country both as a black person and specifically as a black (looking)woman.

Am I just being paranoid?

I love Cynthia. She's a strong woman, and won't allow ANYONE to run her over. Her father was a congressman as well, and he raised her RIGHT!

Many people don't like her...because she won't shutup and "know her place", etc. But that's why Atlantans and Decaturites love her!

I love Rep. McKinley too. But she was looking less like a member of Congress and more like some chick who'd had a RUFF evening at some Atlantean club or something.

Abm why does a Black womans natural hair = ruff and unhinged and unacceptable in a professional mileu.

Her hair is coiffed(spling)and structured. Real black hair is still unacceptable to most black people so much so that it many of us would partially defend this peice of shit's comments about her because many of us were thinking the same thing. That's some sad shit.

Black Girl:

Boortz still has a job because the establishment hates McKinney and is getting ready to do the job on her--again. They did this with Adam Clayton Powell back in the 60's. Of course his stuff was raggedy, too but if you toe the line your stuff can be raggedy as you wanna be.

I saw her I guess it was yesterday on tv trying to defend herself. Somebody needs to pull her coat tail--I know its rough and I wouldn't be surprised if that cop was put up to do that by people looking to get her. She needs to keep a low profile for a while..or go out clowning for real.

Her hair is recently cut short and colored, too. And she STILL didn't feel the need to get straight hair because it's deemed more "professional". YOU GO GIRL!

You all forget, this was the ONLY Georgia Congresswoman (or man) who had the NERVE, the GALL to say that the White House was lying about 9/11 and that they knew SOMETHING about it. They called her crazy, RE-ARRANGED THE DISTRICTS so that her usual constituents wouldn't be voting for her, voted her out of Congress....and when the news came out that she wasn't lying, they voted her back in by the next election.

What people love about her and her father....they say what everyone else knows/is thinking, but is too afraid to say.

Renata, I think Cynthia McKinney is one brave sister who dears to tell the truth and not sell out her people. The fact that she refuses to bend to the enourmous white and black cultural pressure to alter her natural black self is further proof of this. I don'y think that black women who don't sport naturals know the sublte and overt cultural pressure we go through.

The less caucasian you appear the more you are hated.

Then you have deal with your own insecurities. Sisters who dear to to go natural ought to be commended. Especially those in positions of power.

--"Mzuri is a nigger bitch.."--

Tonya, guess what?

"Nigger bitches" outnumber us, on these boards and in this society. They are the ones who give the White people the idea that "it's O.K." to insult our role models the way they do.

We got a lot of work to do, don't we? ^^'

That's all I gotta say.

This incident reminds me of something....

Remember acouple years ago when Shawn and Marlon wayans made fun of macy gray's natural style on the billboard (or MTV?) music awards?

Well, there's one example of our own kind sending the message that it's "O.K." to insult us. -_-'

On a basic, human level, his comments were unwarranted and disgustingly rude because that is her natural hair--and no woman should feel as if she can't wear her hair natural. And she is a Congresswoman. For this man to call her a "ghetto slut" on the radio is so disrepectful to her as a professional. For him not to be fired would be criminal.

I don't care what their siblings look like, Shawn and Marlon look VERY removed from black Africa. Shawn in particular has a very caucasoid nose.

What is Shawn and Marlon going to identify with? Some ambiguous racial otherness??

I'm all for having ppl like Mariah Carey, Nicole Richie, Vin Diesel, and Wentworth Miller not simply JUST identify with Black--but

Shawn and Marlon Wayans--that's a bit too far fetched. It's possible they inherited their white nose from a long distance White ancestor--but they are Black men nonetheless.

It's crazy to have a bunch of Black folks separated into all these crazy categories because they have one or two 'Caucasion' features.

Zuriburi,

For the last 10 years, my wife has worn her NATURAL hair. She's worn beautiful afros, locks, twists, braids, etc. And I not only approve of it...I encourage and LOVE them.

I have had many knockdown-dragout arguments with sistahs who perm/straigten their hair (though I am somewhat ambivalent about hair coloring).

I imagine evidence of such can be found amongst the archives on this very website.

But just because I think sistahs should wear their natural hair does NOT mean I think it should look any-whicha-way. There still should be some basic form, shape or flow to how one styles his/her hair.

And, perhaps we disagree, but I just did NOT see that when McKinney appeared on CSPAN.

My initial impression from looking at McKinney was she had after a ruff evening just gotten out of bed, hastily dressed and appeared in public WITHOUT even looking in a mirror.

Frankly, how they identify is not the concern of black folk.

but they are Black men nonetheless.

I disagree. Blacks are people of unmixed, or at the very least overwhelmingly, sub-saharhan African ancestry. Anyone else is "passing" as black.

It's crazy to have a bunch of Black folks separated into all these crazy categories because they have one or two 'Caucasion' features.

As far as I'm concerned there are only two categories: black and non-black.

ABM, look at what this idiot rastafurious wrote. Tell me that this is not unreasonable hostility towards a woman who in your estimation (I disagree)is having what can be amounted to as 'a bad hair day'.

Maybe your thread wasn't this openly hostile ( and filled with hatred towards natural female blackness) but the same undertones are present. But what is most telling is your LACK of criticism of a WHITE disc jocky who was absolutley out of line and deserved to lose his job for referring to a member of congress this way.

Exactly, Zuri.

And ABM has been consenting to quite a lot of hostile/hateful commentary about black women in the last few months--all because he's mad us for telling TRUTH about our experiences as the lowest the people on the food chain. He can't accept the FACT that one of black women's "exploiter/oppressors" is most often the black male---only because she is the only person the society allows the black male to be over and look down on. So like a white man, they pretend there's some INHERENT flaw in black women and that black women deserve all this abuse. And you have yet to see ABM challenge any of the sexist, hateful colorist bullshit dished out by Schakspir, Doberman----or line itemed in the news stories posted here.

I'm not saying this to lure him out---I really don't want to talk with him; and I really am tired of the board---but you're right ZURI.

Unless your name is "ABM", Schakspir or Doberman---I didn't refer to you in my post.

And I did not call any of those people any names in my post.

You made a post as "RASTAFARIOUS" and called me a bunch of names that I just don't feel like being called today----and that I don't DESERVE to be called.

So I deleted your post.

I called your mother the name that you called me---AFTER---you started in with the namecalling.

And now I've deleted your last post as well--which was laced with more "nasty names" that you've applied to me.

I did it to show who's BOSS around here----and to demonstrate that I can protect/honor myself from Black Men like you.

I see you tried to get in your DIG while I was gone.

The funny thing is that black men are actually LINED UP to touch my old ass. You'd be quite stunned--not that they think I look that old.

It's not the "being touched" that I ever had a problem with black men about. LOL :-)

But you can dream on.

That's just what Black hair looks like in it's most natural state. It simply does not lay perfectly in comparison to when its been relaxed. And further, her hair is rather short so it's going to have that wild african bedhead look.(not meant in a negative way) Possibly if it were longer she would be able to do more with it--but from the looks of it, she seems to be trying to grow it out naturally. So when it finally grows shoulder length maybe she'll be able to play around with it for versatility.

Honestly, her doesn't look so bad that it warrants this much controversy. I've seen much WORSE hairstyles on everyday White women--and they tend to never do anything to their hair at all. So many Caucasion women suffer from frizz, static, really thin and limp hair--extremely outrageously weird hairlines that I cannot even imagine is possible in the human race. Some even admit to not combing their hair--period. And white hair is not so great that it should go uncombed--it's just that society is so used to seeing Caucasion hair just being that--Caucasion hair=the ability to not have to comb, style, or do nothing. But society doesn't call a confress for issues like this cause white women have the freedom to be themselves.

Cynthia's style is a rather nice look for a woman of her age. I tend to notice that a lot of Black women decide to go natural like her as they get older (in their late 30s-and up) because they are sick and tired of trying to please society--and the stress that it causes their hair.(hair thinning, breakage, split ends) Most black women enjoy the freedom of not trying to press, perm, or blend in their hair with weaves--and they even claim their hair grows longer when it's natural.

You are correct, BB - many white women walk around with stringy, dirty, stinky looking hair that has no style and no one calls a presser about it. But that's no excuse for Cynthia McKinney. She is a Congresswoman, she represents her constituents (as well as Black ppl in general) and she's getting paid! None of the females around here would go to the office with their hair looking any old kind of way, and neither should the Congresswoman. If she can't get her hair together better than that, she needs to get a rubberband, some barrettes, a scarf, a hat, a wig or something. Maybe she could just put some jheri curl juice on her head. The woman needs help.

Beauty, I don't know where some on this board are from - if they've ever lived in areas where there is a large AA majority - but I'm assuming they haven't been around a lot of black folks for at least 20 years--because as far as I can remember (and I'm 31)... countless sisters, young and old, and from all walks of life **ESPECIALLY the so-called middle and upper classes** have been ROCKING McKinney's do for many, many years. My aunt, who is a professional, wears that style and has worn similar styles since I've known her. A doctor that I used to work for wore her hair that way--when I saw her recently I noticed that she continues to do so. Back in the days, plenty of my girlfriends - mostly students, some law and med - sported that style as part of a preppy, sophisticated look. Take a walk on any urban campus you'll see some are still rocking it the same way--it is, and has been for a long time, considered chic, elegant and, for students and professionals, a symbol of much pride. Black females in congress, for whatever reason, call themselves taking on a more "appropriate"/"conservative" look (i.e. what appears acceptable to whites); that's why Cynthia McKinney's hairdo stands out and is supposedly unacceptable. In the black population, however, that hairstyle is normal, in some corners - fashionable, and in others quite conservative believe it or not.

BrownBeauty,

--"Black women decide to go natural like her as they get older (in their late 30s-and up) because they are sick and tired of trying to please society--and the stress that it causes their hair."--

You're right about that. But younger women are doing the same thing for the same reasons.I don't know about other people, but my hair seems to grow alot faster ( and dries quicker) than it did when it was relaxed. Nowadays, the only reason I hear women getting a relaxer is "easier maintenance", though I don't know how many of those cases are true.

--"and they even claim their hair grows longer when it's natural. "--

That's true, actually. My hair grows longer....by an inch and a half if it's flat-ironed. ^^'My mother's hair was just as long when she was my age but she cut it after I was born and it hasn't grown back......so you're right. ^^'

Tonya,

--"Black females in congress, for whatever reason, call themselves taking on a more "appropriate"/"conservative" look..."--

I guess we should blame Condi? :-)

even if the hairdo looks like shit to you, (black men) you still should have that woman's back regardless. It's rather superficial to let her go to the dogs just because her hair wasn't styled the way *you* think it should look..
