Why do you think there was so litle,if any media coverage of Octavia Butler's death? When was the funeral? Do you suppose it might have been her directive, given that she was reported to be reclusive? |

No, not her directive. You have no choice over how little or how much the media covers you. She was black, unattractive and they never wanted her talent hyped in the first place. Sci-Fi is a white man's genre and she was dominating it.

"She was black, unattractive and they never wanted her talent hyped in the first place. " Makes me worry about my OWN writing career. O_O' |

I feel bad that I don't know who Octavia Butler was. She is from my hoemtown of Pasadena, Ca. She used to go to my school(P.C.C). I wish I could have met her |

Sent from a contact of mine: Last week, I attended a memorial for Octavia Butler at Eso Won Books here in LA. Friends and fans gathered to share memories and to read from "Kindred," "Parable of the Sower," and her many other works. As an artist she was very intentional about fostering the optimum setting to unravel her genius. Those who knew her spoke of a woman who uprooted her life whenever her craft led her to do so; one writer friend mentioned not talking to her for several months/not being able to find her and then one day finding out she'd gone to the Amazon to study nature/mating habits for her next book. Wow! Like many, I am moved by her commitment to words. In the midst of long bouts with writer's block, she eeked out otherworldy realms that defy the genre of "science fiction" or even "speculative fiction." In essence, she created her own religion. If you haven't already, I'd invite you to check out her work. Thanks for the feedback. Had been a (an?) Octavia fan for years when I had the opportunity to attend one of her readings. Was very surprised at her very masuline apperance. Surprissed again that in the articles she is identified as a lesbian. Given her apperance, it should not surprise me, but I ain't very bright. Thanks Again |

I just got back from volunteer work at the local shelter. Two of the ladies there are reading "Kindred". Just thought I'd mention that. ^_^ |
