In my sociology class, the teacher invited this guy he knew from the Arish suez canal area who taught at University of of Egypt. He talked to us about life in egypt and egyptian culture. When he started awnsering questions andamong his awnsers were: *"muslims and chritsians [in egypt]live in peace.Thereare incidents with misunderstandings, but the media blows it out of porportion." *"women are allowed to get a degree, have career, but they need a partner when they are out in public." "[If a woman is raped] they do not blame the woman. Just... in Egypt some women commit adultery and say they are raped to hide the adultery, so people are never sure." I began to smell the B.S. I took the chance to ask him: "does Egypt have issues with race or racism, like we do in the states?" His awnser: "Under islamic law, there is no differemce between black and white, man and woman, we are the same, all muslims." He was a nice guy but does anyone else think he was turning a blind eye to his nation's dark side? :/

Now did you really think an Egyptian would come and tell you the total unvarnished truth about the situation in his country, particularly when word would get back and he could get tossed in prison? For that matter, if you were in the same position in Egypt, would you tell the Egyptian class the truth about the U.S.? Particularly when it could also get back?

He's a DAMN LIAR. FOB Egyptians come to this country and will tell you TO YOUR FACE that they prefer light skinned blacks to dark skinned blacks because they look more Egyptian/ME to them. They are also adamant that they ARE NOT AFRICAN, but Arab. And I know they didn't start that BS just after they got here. The women do have degrees, but they don't really use them. |

i didn't know that egyptians were killing blacks, i thought it was arabs who were killing blacks. from my own experiences with egyptian men, it seems a lot of them LOVE them some black women.....no lie i don't know if the reason they're attracted to me is because i'm light skinned or not...the dark sker skinned women may think differently because they've had different experiences with them.....but just about every one of them i've met seem to love black features. I'm not even that light skinned, i'm light brown. I'm a little darker than beyonce and halle berry but a lot of them have been attracted to meand tried to enter relationships with me but i already have a boyfriend. Another thing though, i haven't met one egyptian man in person who had racist things to say about black people nor have i met racist egyptian men on the internet in chat rooms or messageboards. Most of them tend to be very open. However, i do notice this....one time i told this egyptian man that his skin was almost the same color as mine and he got quiet....he didn't want to seem to admit that he was almost my color, eventhough he was very attracted to me. So, there may be something to what you guys are saying...i jsut haven't experienced any of it at all in terms of racism towards blacks. I don't know. However, i have seen a slight hint of sexism in some of them...but most i've met haven't been very sexist, at least not as sexist as people claim they are. remember, egypt was one of the first to have female rulers and they were the first to show a certain degree of respect to women. |

Misty, there are many young "African" women who come to this country who would say the same thing about "White American" men that you said about Egyptians. That they are not racist and love black women. You can't really judge by a man who's trying to shag you. Racist white men have been charming the pants of sistas for decades. It's also my understanding that Arab people have a slightly different attitude in America than they do in their own countries. They don't stone people in the streets over here, but they do back home.

Misty, they're quite different AFTER marriage. I've had a few friends married to Egyptians, and they ALL had problems with them.....jealousy, rage, etc. I can't say that there are NO non-psychotic Egyptian men, I'm sure that a lot of them must be nice...but I've never met one. People don't have a problem telling me all of the stupid colorist bullshit....because they think I'll be "flattered" by it. I'm about Lisa Bonet's color....and light skinned AND arab people try to talk to me like we're in some kind of secret club or something and that I'll be happy when they mention to me that I'm "OK" because of my skin color. Arab men, for instance, find no problem with saying TO MY FACE "you have a very light skin color. YOU, I could marry." Or, "People would like you in Egypt because you have skin like Arab people." And I've even been told, "with your skin color, you could have any man you want in Egypt." I'm not flattered by it at all. BTW, Egyptians ARE Arab. |
