To all,
the one thing I've feared the most is the possible release of my old movies in the West.
I'm in court fighting a sleazy Arab rich guy who wants to put some of my films (I made about 46) on DVD and release them in a box set.
I was able to keep another man from screening a "Naima Kitar" film in London two years ago (some of you remember), because of course it was a bootleg reel. He didn't own the Egyptian print and I won.
The Arab nations in which these films were made don't want the films ever shown, for obvious reasons--as it would begin to give even more authenticity to the stories I've told about the men leading these countries.
And then...I don't want them shown, because then there would exist the image of 20 year old Kola--a ribald sex kitten (none of the films are pornos, they're silly B-movies about gangsters and oil tycoons)...constantly cooing and wiggling and giggling.
Images that would make it virtually impossible for me to ascend to the next level....that of serious and STUDIED literary writer.
To talk about Kola Boof having once upon a time done these things is quite different....than being able to rent the DVD at Blockbuster and hold a party behind it.
Though we know that Maya Angelou was once a stripper and a Pimp----we don't ever see any images of that time in her youth. And so the "legend" of it only enriches the flavor of her books.
I'm a grown woman now. I'm a WRITER. And so it's very important that these poorly made Arab films remain in the sand belt.
Unlike the topless photos on the backs of my books--these old movies make no political statement and don't allow me to control the image or message in them whatsoever. The writing and producing is all by MEN.
So it's not like the work I do now, where I am the controller and using my image for political and social change.
I know that many who hate me come here---but for those who understand my struggle and the importance of my work....
Please pray for me to win my court battles, so that I can realize my talent as a novelist-poet and do what I was meant to do.

Ms. Kola, is it really you? Because you aren't signed in.
When you become rich and famous, ppl are going to come out of the wood works with things that you may have done in the impetuousness of your youth. This is a common occurrence. We have all done things when we were young that we wish we hadn't and we don't want ppl to know about. I've got plenty of dirt in my past, but I was young and dumb and so I don't hold those things against myself.
So, hopefully you can beat these ppl, but if you can't beat them, then just make sure that you are fairly compensated. I know that you are upset right now, but don't spaz about this too much, life is too short and there are more important things for you to do. Reasonable ppl aren't going to judge you over things that you did when you were young.

Not to stir up the wasps nests again. But I guess you can kind of see where Cynique was coming from. Not exactly the same...but same principle. |

Kola,
Don't worry, babe. You've been very upfront about your past. Most Americans, especially African Americans, appreciate that and understand that many of us have not ascended a "crystal stair".
And most who fairly and earnestly read of your writing will be able to quickly put your past aside.

Why does that guy want to release your movies? what's he got to gain?
uh wait-- you were 20. How many well-accomplish women posed nude in college? How many actors once starred in a porn or worked at a strip club? How would YOU be any different from anyone else?
DOes that Arab guy really think he's gonna accomplish something here? |
