I have no idea whether this is true or not yet.
But several black women (all lightskinned by the way) have emailed me that Tavis Smiley was on the Buck/Star radio show this morning and was quite serious as he said that "every black man needs a white woman".
Only because it's Tavis Smiley would I be shocked. I've always admired him, although he can be short-sighted at times.
Does anyone know anything about this?

This is like saying every black woman should become a lesbian.
Or every black boy should have his head shaved and tattoed.
IF Tavis didn't say this...then he really should clear it up right away, because of course---it's Black Women (church black women, in particular) who've made him a success.

I can imagine him saying something like this. Like you said Kola, even our leaders are ppl who hate our race. Its like Mos Def who talks all this mess about "Black is Beautiful" but he runs out and marries the first mixed race girl he can find. |

It's highly likely that Tavis was joking around, even if he sounded serious. Star & Buc Wild is not a serious radio talk show. He was probably clowning with one of the girls on the set. |

Mzuri,
I've seen Tavis out on dates several times here in L.A.....and it was ALWAYS with a pretty black girl. All shades--dark cocoa, fresh tea, sunlit peach.
So I am very confused and hoping that he didn't make a comment like that----when basically----those are the only messages that young black boys ever receive from black men in our culture. From the music video to the magazines to everything else----young black boys are INNUNDATED with these messages from Black men.
Young black females, of course, are being slaughtered by the messages.
And those of us who care----are branded "bitter".

I missed the Tavis Smiley interview this morning because he interviewed around 7-7:30 am (of course I was on my third go round with the snooze button by that time). I did hear that Tavis was in the studio but if anyone has ever listened to the Star n Bucwild Show previously you would then know that you can't take 80% of anything said on that show seriously.....
Star did say that he was going to rebroadcast the interview at a later date.....
If it comes on again I will send an update .... |

I don't know whether or not Tavis said "every black man needs a white woman". But where is Tavis' BLACK wife?
How are you going to help save Black America when you're NOT intimately involved in the most primary and troubled human structured called "a family"?
Tavis reminds me of Oprah (also has no spouse, no kids). Here you have these people earning millions offering advice to people YET they're not REALLY involved in that which they advise others about. |

And I won't be shocked if he suddenly turns up married to a white woman.
Which is why I'm starting PROOF magazine.

so just because someone marries a light skinend or mixed woman...they can't be attracted to what you all label a '"true" black woman?
that's in sane and doensn't make sense.
my tatse in men has always been very diverse...that's how i know this idea is nuts. |

Misty, I totally agree with you about being attracted to a variety of black looks. I do think that's normal----but I don't think for most "black males", it's possible or plausible.
And the reason it's not possible is because only one end of the spectrum of black female beauty is celebrated or recognized in our culture---the lightest end.
.....so I also agree with the person's comments about Mos Def.
I believe he married his wife because she LOOKS WHITE.
And since the vast majority of famous white men marry white women, and yet the most visible black men choose anything but a black woman---there will always be GENUINE reason to doubt the choices by these black men.
When successful black men do marry a black woman--she's not really black, but a mixture of blood types and only culturally black.
The pattern itself is abnormal and OBVIOUS.
It also bastardizes our people even more. Although, because you're very lightskinned and a product of America--you're not able to understand why Black people would value their Blackness enough to want to protect it.
But you DO understand it in whites.

I totally lost respect for Mos Def as well.
And that's exactly what black women should do. Stop supporting people who hate us and hate our race.
Perhaps I'm misjudging Mos Def----but I don't think so.

Bottom line. THANK YOU!
People have the nerve to WONDER what we find so "great" about being black, being OURSELVES.....but have no problem understanding why people think white skin is so great to have that they're praying for their kids to have even lighter skin.
And for anyone pushing for that "ONE RACE" thing, how about having everyone swing their color preference to wanting their children born DARKER skinned? Or is that somehow not "natural" for people to want? |

And Misty, ATTRACTION doesn't mean SQUAT as far as I'm concerned.
Men are attracted enough to PLENTY of women they have children with, but if they're not willing to marry them and help them raise their children, what the hell is that attraction worth? |

Of course it’s possible because sometimes nature rules out over what you’ve been taught to think as in the case of slaves. There were a lot of slaves who were taught they were suppose to be slaves and that they were inferior to whites, however, you also had a good amount of blacks who were told this their whole lives and faught against this type of thinking because their strong minded nature and intelligence took over. However, I do see your point. But I just don’t think that there are as many blacks who are as weak minded and able to be bamboozled as people think. Although I will admit that there are still too many of us who are brainwashed.

Right but that still doesn’t make it impossible

That could possibly be the reason or it may just be that that’s the girl he fell in love with at the time. He probably would have just as soon married a dark woman as he would a mixed one and I think this is especially possible for mos def considering his revolutionary stance on most things concerning black people and also concerning the way he has praised dark skin. He could be a hypocrite or he could just be in love that’s something that only he will ever know and it’s hard to make that distinction when you’re on the outside looking in.

I use to think that too but I don’t know how much stock I can put in that anymore because if you look at the larger picture…. I remember reading some stats that showed 50% of successful black men are married to white women and the other 50% who are married are married to black women….Successful black men are more likely to be around white women than they are to be around black women.
and even then the successful black men are more likely to choose black women when we compare the small percentage of black women in america to the percentage of white women in america. We only represent about 8% of the population and then when you talk about successful black women our population dwindles even more because most black women still earn less than white women. So, if 50% of successful black men who are married are married to black women then they are actually more likely to choose a black woman even though they are more likely to run into white women.

I think you have a point on this one…however I do know a lot of black men who find light skin and mixed black women more attrtractive than they find white women….so it may have something to do with more than using lighter women as a fill in for white women.

I don’t care how much black people mix, that “blackness” will always pop up somewhere along the line because “blacks” were the first people so black people can never be completely wiped out through mixture. Since darker people were the first they have the strongest gene. Dark skin will pop up somewhere along the line. Now white skin on the other hand is more likely to be able to be bred out of the planet than dark skin. White people only represent like 10% of the worlds population. Plus, the world is getting darker and darker anyway because of natural selection and global warming. So I would say that everything is headed in the black and brown direction.

Ummm, provide proof of something I said that would make you think I understand how whites would want to maintain white genes and then get back to me. I;ve always admired darker skin and the nappiness of our hair which is why I’ve been natural for 5 years now. I had to face my own parents telling me that my hair looked terrible and that I should straighten it but I bared through it and refused to straighten it because i love the texture. However, you would never know trhat because you want to label me self hating simply because I don’t agree with your concept of race.It’s simple as that and that’s the only reason you keep throwing these backhanded remarks about me in your posts simply because I challenge your view of race and it makes you feel uncomfortable because you probably are starting to see some truth in it. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you on EVERYTHING all the time doesn’t mean you should start falsely accusing them. I have to say that I usually respect and agree with most things you stand for and most of the thingsd you say but these little;e snide comments and off the cuff accusations need to stop. I don’t label you one way and try to take pot shots simply because I disagree with a few things you stand for.

That being said, I agree but with me I have to see more proof from a person that they are actually thinking a certain way before I judge them just from one action. So I would have to know mos def a little better before I could make the conclusion that he hated black women.
