African American Authors Celebrated At the Historic Alhambra Ballroom BET's Abiola Abrahms hosts the third annual African American Literary Awards Show September 19 (New York) The African American Literary Award Show will host its 3rd annual Open Book Awards on Wednesday, September 26th at the historic Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem. The event was created to highlight African American authors who, although representing a commercially viable segment of the market, remain largely uncelebrated. With the nominees in 30 categories, it is the first awards show of its kind as well as the most comprehensive. Because of that fact, it continues to grow in popularity among publishers, authors and celebrities alike. The inaugural award show was held on September 29, 2004 with winners that included among others: Maya Angelou, Zora Neale Hurston, Carter G. Woodson, Donna Grant, Virginia Deberry, Zane, JL King, Eric Jerome Dickey, Terrie Williams, Patti Labelle, Alicia Keys, Dave Chappelle and Black Expressions Book Club. Founder and producer Yvette Hayward goes on to say, This has been my baby for the past 3 years. I am very excited to see that we have at least moved from crawling to walking! We have received nods of appreciation on both a macro and micro level from the marketplace to the community. It feels amazing to be doing something positive and to be able to fill the recognition void for African American authors.” This year's presenters include: Doug and Jackie Christie (NBA star), actress Victoria Rowell, April Woodard (Inside Edition), Kwame Jackson (The Apprentice, Season 1), actor Nicoye Banks, Daymond John (founder, FUBU), Tracy Humphrey (Fox 5 News), Victoria Christopher Murray (Author, Ex Files), Miasha (Author, Mistress Me), Sharon Quinn (Monique's F.A.T. Chance) and Ank-Rha (Making the Band 4). For more information, visit www.literaryawardshow.com. Ticket prices: $65 in advance $75 (cash) at the door. The Alhambra Ballroom is located at 2116 Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard at 126th Street. Media check-in and celebrity arrivals begin at 6:00pm. The cocktail hour begins at 6:30pm.
