Though you probably would be surprised, when it comes to behavior in public I am old school. I was born in 1950, and believe in respecting elders (harder to find every year) and ladies and not talking loud or using foul language in public. This is definitely the past--nowadays in public, especially on public transportation some folks act like beasts. Probably mad cuz they ain't drivin, or because they are black. Anyways, I usually just shut it out--and remember the times I breached this rule coming up and figure it is karma. Some of the other Old Schoolers around here feel the same, and sometimes gather on radio talk shows to decry the lack of civility. (One time I was on the bus with Professor Alice Windom, who knew Malcolm X. We were solving the problems of the world when Prof Windom interupted our conversation to address a young hoochie who was cussing and snapping her gum. "Young lady," Alice said. "You are an attractive young lady and you would be much more attractive if you didn't snap your gum." "Here is where we get pistol whipped," I moaned under my breath. To my surprise, the young lady took it gracefully. This didn't happen to an Old Schooler the other day. He was on the Metro and approached some youngsters about cussing so much around elders. Naturally they beat him like he stole something. Almost broke his jaw. Put him in the hospital. I say that to say this: If you feel like you have to correct some of these Thundercatz and kitties COME correct, or let it pass. Word. | ||

I often encounter young raucous loud mouths when I go to the local rib joint. I've frequently gotten positive results if I make eye contact with them and give them a look that conveys the idea that "you know better than to act like that". Their response is usually a sheepish grin and a more polite demeanor. | ||

You know nothing about the south side of Chicago, so shut up, Chrishayden. I don't even think Blackstone and 83rd intercept. With your 1970s mentality, you still attach notoriety to the name "Blackstone" and associate it with gangs and criminals when no one street in Chicago can lay claim to this distinction any more. The Blackstone Rangers, who you are so fond of referring to, fragmented into branches long ago, all of which have different names and few of which incoporate the name "Blackstone" into their title. The town where I live has a great influx of thugs from Chicago's notorious west side, and these niggas don't play. Last year my home town led Chicago's western suburbs when it come to murders. The thing is is that, for some reason, a lot of the younger hoods have an affection for their "Grammas" and often defer to older women who remind them of these long-suffering matriarchs. | ||

Ha! Nice try but I don't think so. Never had a white man (or any man for that matter) goose me in the butt or ask me about black women. Perhaps this has been your experience?
