"Unfriend" has been named the word of the year by the New Oxford American Dictionary, chosen from a list of finalists with a tech-savvy bent. Unfriend was defined as a verb that means to remove someone as a "friend" on a social networking site such as Facebook. "It has both currency and potential longevity," said Christine Lindberg, senior lexicographer for Oxford's U.S. dictionary program, in a statement. "In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year"... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091117/lf_nm_life/us_words_unfriend BTW, I started on FB to "keep up" with my teen aged and young adult relatives. So far they have never denied my friend requests and no one (yet!) has unfriended me. But I do try to be respectful of boundaries and try not to comment on items clearly not meant for me. And I try not to embarass them in front of their (real) friends too often by saying how much I love and miss them or how cute they were as little babies or anything like that. |

I aways use "defriend". Just a couple more random thought on facebook: If someone unfriended me I would probably not notice. I've defriended less than a handful of people. It seems maintaining a facebook friend can be more difficult than maintaining a real friendship. Facebook's impact on male female relations is 2 or 3 orders of magnitude worse than *69 and caller ID combined. I've heard a number of facebook horror stories; mostly involving nude photos. My Aunt calls it "MyFaceSpace" I've friended people I have not seen in over 35 years. The last time I saw the person they had not hit puberty, now they are grandparents. You still see them as a child in your mind's eye. When you look at their photos you feel like you are fast forwarding through time... it is really weird feeling. Sometimes I look at my facebook page and it occurs to me that I'm truly blessed. |

I "unfriended" one of my grandsons because all he posted were Lil Wayne raps. Also got rid of a "bad penny" who showed up and reminded me how he was once a playmate of my kids who then reminded me that this guy was the neighborhood bully whose crazy brother had once been arrested for rape. I was surprised to see that there are facebook spammers who inundate you with their solicitations. I was also surprised to receive a friend request from somebody who used to post here regularly. So me and "Lambd" are now facebook buddies. |

Cynique you defriended a grandchild. I can see him in some analyst's couch trying reconcile the rejection :-) Cynique, I just sent you an Lambd (I used to like his contributions) a friend request. ANYTIME there is a platform which reachs more than 4 people, folks will use it to promote their businesses. Including yours truly. However my business promotion is limited to a single daily post, typically a book recommendation or a photo from an event. Actually they are personal posts, but tied into what I do. I detest spam. If we got rid of spam the virtual world would be a much nicer place. |
