I'll always remember one of Oprah's "darkest" moments. That would be the week-end that "Beloved", the movie in which she had invested so much of her time, hope, and money, opened out of the top 5 with a scant 8-million dollar gross. Even Oprah can't win em all. |

Just to be clear: this particular article is about Oprah's moments of being "Black" on her show--this, despite usually being perceived as mainly appealing to White middle class female viewers. Cynique, what did you think of the movie Beloved compared to the book? I never thought the book should have been made into a movie. But once it was,I thought that the "ghost" daughter should have been handled differently. I'll have to rent the movie to better articulate exactly what I mean by that though. |

Yes, Yvette, that's why I put "darkest" in quotes because my post wasn't about Oprah's "blackest" moment, a description "Beloved" wouldn't qualify for since, although it starred black actors and was about black folks, it was directed by a white man. I just injected my comment into the subject to cite an example of an Oprah failure. I agree, that "Beloved" did not translate to the screen well. It was difficult enough to process the book and distill its meaning without trying to convey its ambiguous message in a movie. Toni Morrison didn't like how the movie interpreted her book either. As for the ghost daughter role, I really didn't give how she was portrayed a second thought. |

My nomination for Oprah's "blackest" moment was when during her promiscuous phase, she got pregnant as a teen-ager and had to be sent to live with her father who was, himself, not married to her mother. Now, if Oprah's baby had lived and she had had to raise it by herself, she could score some points when it come to being "heroic". I luv it. I'm incorrigible, a distinction I proudly lay claim to. |

"this particular article is about Oprah's moments of being "Black" on her show--this, despite usually being perceived as mainly appealing to White middle class female viewers." (I was around when she started coming on. I heard she used to be black. I never saw it. Just saw her doing this mammy act, crying and hugging all these sorry fat white suburban women. That was her audience. It was wise of her to go to them. Nobody could keep a top show on just appealing to Black people.) "what did you think of the movie Beloved compared to the book" (To this day I cannot make head or tale of that book. Almost every woman I know who has read it has received something. It is a woman thang. I thought the movie was about an hour too long and that Oprah ruined it taking that lead part. I was able to finally figure out what the book was about after seeing it, though) "Oprahs' Blackest moment: Actively campaigned for Barack Obama. " (Ole gal gave a couple of speeches for him that I had to look and see who it was. She was great. If she can break away from those pathetic shmoos that lick up after her she could be a great speaker--I doubt she writes her own speeches, though. Anyway with all her dough she don't need the hassle. |
