I am curious--what kind of person goes surfing to find out when they celebrate Black History Month in other countries?

What did you find for Iceland?

Why would you assume she went searching? Not sure this is how Yvette found out, but some of us have black friends in the UK and other parts of the world. Duh.

Exactly. The Internet is an amazing thing: You start out searching for one thing and in the process find out something about something else entirely. There needs to be a name for this kind of unintentional good. In the old days I used to experience this browsing through the stacks in the library. I'm desperately looking for a volume of some journal containing the one article I think my life depends on. I do not find the volume, but end up finding some other book or journal I did not even know existed...

As for your Iceland question, I doubt that Iceland has a Black History Month given its (I assume) low population of Blacks. The UK's observances seem a lot more focused on the Caribbean, given that most of the Black population is directly descendent from the islands.

But why don't you research Iceland, Chris, and get back to us, hmm? :-)

And our big word for today is "serendipity", and I spelled it right, unlike the flub I made in another post where I misspelled "anecdote". (I caught it later and corrected it.)

Yvette, that happens to me all the time! I'd be embarrassed for someone to see my search "string"...how I start off researching something completely substantive and end up trying to find out the name of Victoria Rowell's new (to me) husband.

Um, hypothetically speaking, of course.

I learned about BHM in the UK from a Tweet of an article written by a white guy (I think) about Malcolm X's rumored bisexuality.

None of my black friends in the UK had made a peep about it.

I go on the Internet and search for medical information. I go on the internet and search for information about how to change the filter in my furnace and where to buy one and what kind to buy. I go on the internet to see how my Congressman voted.

Who, but a fantastic compendium of useless information--aka The Artist Formerly Known as Yvettep--searches up that it is Black History Month in Britain?

I mean, do you need a life? Can I provide a few activities for you?

Bobbing for apples? Playing Pin on the Donkey or Old Maid? Playing with a Ouiji Board?

The problem with your responses, chrishayden, is that they originate in "chrishayden-land" and are never relevant to the real world. They are not rebuttals but are just a continuation of a comment wherein you have simply complained. You skip from step "a" to step "c", never providing a step "b", which is to say there is "no method to your madness" and no point of reference to illuminate how you reach your skewed conclusions.

Yvette clearly explained that she acquired interesting tid-bits in the course of looking up other things and, in this case, decided to share a snippet of information that she didn't seek, but found.

No information is useless to a curious mind and a curious mind beats a stagnant one any day. The accumulation of trivia contributes to making someone a good conversationlist as opposed to an ignorant dullard. (This is a condition which particularly afflicts today young folks, - twittering inarticulate air heads who know nothing about anything of substance, especially it happened before they were born.)

You think that unless you anoint something with your interest it is worthless, never realizing how the subjects you provide links to may not wow others.

You frequently imply that both Yvette and FK are frivolous personifications of the black middleclass, and nothing could be further from the truth. Something you would know if you were discerning, and had a memory.

(Interesting to whom? To what? What kind of poindexters are interested in trivia with all the things going on now in the world?)

No information is useless to a curious mind and a curious mind beats a stagnant one any day

(So how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Is it Cynique? Or is it me?

It's Cynique, isn't it?)

Everybody was just chompin at the bit to read the update on Sun Ra which you provided, weren't they? Not.

What YOU find interesting is strictly personal and more than a little boring. Trivia covers a broad scope wherein there's something for everybody.

There is no hope for you Chris. But I do have one more piece of UK BHM food for thought just for you:

As Black History Month ends it is timely to remember the history of the struggle to gain Black political representation. Thankfully Marc Wadsworth has produced a wonderful booklet on the Labour Party Black Sections

Last year marked the 25th anniversary of the Black Sections, which were instrumental in making the first breakthrough in 1987, when Diane Abbott, the late Bernie Grant, Keith Vaz and Paul Boateng were elected to parliament.

Prior to that there had only ever been three MPs of colour, and they were last seen in Westminster some 60 years beforehand.

Last October I attended a meeting and reception in the House of Commons to mark the 25th anniversary, which witnessed speeches by – amongst others – MPs Abbott, David Lammy, Dawn Butler, Shahid Malik and Virendra Sharma....
