After calling out all of its heavy hitters, - Oprah and Michelle, and having Barak make a quick over-night trip to Copenhagen to boost Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympics, our fair city got the boot and didn't get the nod. This is really a big blow to the prestiege of both Mayor Daley and President Obama - and America. A big celebration was ready to erupt here in Chi-town and when the news came, there was a state of shock. But not everybody was disappointed. Many thought there were other pressing issues that needed to take priority over the Olympics. Pundits are suggesting that anti-American sentiment sank this effort because these advocates were too pushy and over-confident. Others are saying the world-wide attention given the brutal beating of a black Chicago school kid by other youngsters also hurt the cause. This rebuff to Obama's influence will certainly make his haters happy. |

I heard that almost 50% of the residents there are glad they are not coming and think money could be well spent other places. I have to agree. However, I also look at the spectacle of what are arguably the two most powerful humans on the planet--Obama and Oprah--taking this humiliation lying down. They should flatten Copenhagen. Turn it into a parking lot. By the way, that beating of that boy, while no doubt a tragedy--that has been going on Chicago for the last 40 years. They have had hundreds of youth killed every year since the wars broke out between the Blackstone Rangers and Disciples Do you think it had extra impact because it was on camera? |

Yes, the incident being recorded on camera for public consumption had an influence, and the sheer brutality of it had a shock effect. Gang killings are mostly executed by drive-by shootings; quick and deadly. This beating was prolonged, and administered with boards and was believed to be about "neighborhood" turf fueled by a changing of the boundaries of a high school causing an influx of students from another neighborhood - or something. The citizens of Copehagen were impressed with Oprah and Michelle, but the IOC committee members apparently didn't appreciate their blitz. |

I think there was likely some pressure to take the games to South America. Hopefully it will end up being a good thing for the city, country and whole continent. Chicago is my favorite city of any I have been to in the world so far. But it can wait. |
