I started to post something rude, but, as I haven't watched the series I restrained myself.

Don't I deserve even one little red star thingy for that?

IMO, the 'Black In America' series is still lacking something special. The message is routine and muddled at the same time. Given that Soledad is mulatto, her mother is Afro-Cuban, her husband is white, and her kids are quadroons, some may wonder what her real motivation is for doing the entire BIA series. Compassion, career growth, humanitarian, etc.? The questions lingers on...

I agree with Nels. I too question the motivation behind the series. Whats new? It's nothing more than a cracked glass spilling out the same old mess! Who gains by watching this oatmeal?

While I think this version was slightly better than the first, I too question the motives of CNN...

I never thought Soledad was the best person to host this show.

I think the show is rather shallow focusing more on people crying rather than delivering information.

As with the first the focus was on the poor misguded under Black people. Even when rich Black people were shown the focus was more on their "struggles" rather than accomplishments.

One would never image after watching CNN that Black are capable living normal lives on any level.

I watched CNN for a few hours over that last fews days. I do not watch much regular TV so watching this much CNN was new to me.

CNN is really like a sophisticated gossip rag. They focused so much on the Skip Gates arrest and Michael Jackson, one would think nothing else was happening in this country.

I think the Black in America series is particularly weak because CNN does not have talent (or chooses not) to produce anything of much depth. They seem to focus on and relish in controversy -- in some way contributing to it with their brand of "reporting".

You're definitely on a roll here. Keep up the great vision, perception and critique.

CNN has been known for sensationalizing the plight(s) of those who have been maligned by mainstream America's historical biases. Its producers, directors and editors just don't seem to "get it". When I watch CNN, more and more it's coming off as a 'cheap jab' vortex where all of the good stuff gets sucked down into the vastness of irrelevance, while the crap rises to the top and dries in the Sun like a rotting carcass that's drawn the attention of its who's who of international correspondents.

CNN has its eye on ratings. It captures them by being a "sophsticated gossip rag". There are apparently millions of people, like me, whose guilty pleasure is satisfied by a daily dose of rumors and hearsay about Michael Jackson; and the more lurid, the better!

This whole series has a National Geographic feel to it that I don't enjoy. We are more complex than that and I want to see a poor whites in America series.

Cynique, do you think your pleasure consuming all the Michael Jackson gossip in some way colors your impression of people, in general, perhaps unconsciously?

OK, you are probably too sophisiticated and seasoned to allow CNN to have this kind of impact on you, and enjoy there coverage for the ratings driven "entertainment" it is, but what about younger people who might be under in the impression that CNN is actually "reporting" on news worthy events?

People complain about ganster rap and urban lit, seems to me we should be complaining about the CNN's of te world... I think they have a bigger negative impact.

Maybe I'm being too Cynical.

Hen81, it would be nice to see a "White in America" from CNN, with the same bias toward dysfunction was they show us. Soledad should host that one too.
