I am a black man in America and I've been around. I've shared many of my life's adventures without real concern of what others would think of me. The beat goes on. The executives at BET should be on the 10 most wanted list. I've been to the post office and seen the faces of the men and women who committed crimes of various degrees. Their faces doesn't always fit the crime. One women looked like my grandmother. One man had the appearance of that old white man that hung on the walls in all black churches - Jesus Christ. "Come on Carey, that's blaspheme". No it's not, it's the truth. What does a rapist or murderer look like? What's the appearance of a person that is bent on taking something from you. Well, many times they look like gold or the guy next door or the fine girls in magazines. Before I continue with this true crime story and why I believe BET should be seated in front of a Grand Jury, I have a few shout outs. I have a few words of wisdom to all the haters and fence straddlers out there - they know who they are. They are the ones that do not believe that hedging on their taxes is a crime. They will tell you that they've never had sex in the back seat of a car or had a one night affair. You can spot them. Their mouth is always fixed in the "yeah but" position. They are prone to say "while you're pointing a finger at another person", three are pointing back at you. I'd like to shout out to my nay negroe friends and tell them to take those fingers and shove'em up their dooky shoots and blow it out your ass. I continue: Back in the day I would do short and long cons. Yep, I would travel the road and dupe unsuspecting people out of their money. I justified my deceptive ways by only playing on people that thought they were playing on me. I looked like a sweet mark to them but the hunter always got captured by the game. One such short con game was called the ring game. My ring game involved a beautiful expensive looking ring that was not a diamond but looked like one. I had a Jewish friend that supplied me with all the trimmings. He owned a jewelry store and sold me merchant price tags and nice looking ring boxes for a very reasonable price. I wasn't the guy selling fake Gucci watches or knock-off purses, oh no. I was just a guy looking for a ring he had lost. I was the guy that was hurting because he had just lost the ring set that he was going to give to his soon to be new bride. White people were easy marks because they loved getting over on black people. I never saw my unsuspecting prey but my "cap man" did. The setup involved a phone call, a bathroom and an innocent looking young black person. My partner would ask to use the marks restroom. It could be the restroom of a fine clothing store or a doctors office; basically any place were a person could use a restroom and money was around. Lawyers are the biggest shysters in the world and yet the easiest to con. I would call the spot and tell them that I was distraught over losing a ring I had just purchase. I told them I'd visited their establishment within the last hour. I asked if anyone had turned in the lost item and if not, would they check the rest room. Well, my partner would appear from the restroom area gawking at "our" ring as if he/she had just found a new way to heaven. Prior to this discovery, I told the person on the phone that there was a reward for the ring. Now the game was on. I told them the ring was worth thousands and they didn't even have to tell the "young black youth" about the reward. I would even whisper the value of the ring, as if someone could hear us. I went on to tell them to get that ring at all cost and I would repay them and give them a bonus and the reward. My "cap man" was good. He would resist giving up the ring until they had drained all the money they thought they could from the mark. Heck, it appeared to be a no lose situation for the hunter turned mark. They had a ring worth thousands of dollars and at the very least a reward of $1000.00 plus a bonus. Some individuals would give up all the money in their purses and pockets or that of the person they were working for because they knew money was just 10 minutes away. I told them I would be there in a few minutes. BET is offering rings of diamonds and gold to our young. Music has always been a means to soothe our souls. Most love to dance and be around people of their own kind. BET has the game locked down. I do not know what's in BET's playbook. I have no idea what their goals are. Their intentions may be honorable but do I need to say anything about the streets of gold and what path those streets lead to. I can hear the knee jerks rattling in their chairs. I can hear the voices saying it's the parents job to monitor what our youth watch on TV. To those I again say ...blow it out your ass. Some fault my be placed at the feet of the parents and lets be real, many parents remember a different BET and therefore, they too have been hoodwinked into believing BET would maintain a standard of moral discipline. More so, BET is increasingly lowing the bar, taking everyone by surprise. Kids will be kids and they love candy. They will eat candy and ice cream until their stomachs hurt. In this case it's their minds and their minds are hard to change. When I was a youth, I thought doing "the dog" was a dance on the wild side but I didn't see 2 young kids doing it on my television. I heard a few songs that said between the sheets but they sure didn't say what they were going to do in those sheets. They didn't tell me in graphic details how they were going to make someones toes curl. Well, not on my TV unless my uncle came over to baby sit and brought his girlfriend along. Now, they might drop in a porno tape and tell my brothers and I to go to bed ....we did but we didn't. If a women wanted to see a guys cheeks she had to go to a swimming pool and not watch lil'wayne dang's thang laying out above his belt line. BET has become the new food stamps. In some states the new electronic food stamps are called link cards. In other states they are called EBT cards. I think those initials stand for Electronic Balance Transfer. But here's the deal, it's not money. You can only spend those funds on food. BET is serving a plate of mush. It looks good to some and to some it makes them feel real good; just like a drug. Doesn't that make BET a pimp or drug dealer. Or maybe BET is like a gambling house that allows it's customers to wager a straight-box bet. A straight box bet allows the customer to hedge their bet by winning even if the letters do not come out in the order chosen. Maybe they are playing on the fact that some don't care if they get BET - the straight bet and will settle for a little of the pie; the box bet - EBT. Yeah, most gamblers think the big one is right around the corner. If the gambler's thirst is temporarily satisfied by their "ebt" win, they can smile and buy a truck load of junk food, which is absent of all the essential vitamins to produce a good body and sound mind. BET has become nothing more than a man standing on the corner playing 3 card molly. The black Kings and Queens was there but now their gone. Btw, that picture has nothing to do with this post, it's just me doing something else I used to do. |

Cynique, you don't have to read anything. I am not trying to be mean but many people have asked me why I continue to post over here. I've always tried to suppost this board by bringing something different. Maybe you should have asked me why "I" call it Molly. I can assume you've never laid down 3 cards, I have. It's possible you've never laid down a few dollars and tried to find the black queen. I doubt that you've ever heard someone entice you to play the game by saying step right up and play 3 card monte. When you posted your story about your visions, I didn't try to tear your story down. I knew it was personal to you. I let those that enjoyed your story to comment without the looming threat of being crucified. Some people can do you and many can't. It's possible that you truly don't understand blog titles or the personal reasons why people have blogs. For the most part, they are all different. It's not my initial intent to submit my posts to a magazine or larger publication. I've done that but when I do, I have someone that is smarter than me tighten it up. Do you need a job? You seem to be preoccupied at finding "errors". Do you watch BET? What do you think of it's programing? |

Just for the record, I'm not the one who gave your post that single star, Carey. And I have not actually criticized the content of your work, per se. It's the simple errors that I think you ought to know better than to to commit that I find distracting. Yet, I have never thought that you needed to stop posting because I don't feel I have the right or authority to embody this idea. Especially since I find you harmless. Not to mention that I have thick skin. You and chrishayden help me to keep s h i t goin. I am actually familiar with the card game of street hustlers but I have always heard it referred to as 3-card "monte", not 3-card "molly". As for BET, I watch it occasionally and, from what I've seen, haven't found it to be any more vapid than MTV or VH1 or the "E" entertainment channel. It shows black movies and re-runs of black sit-coms, reality shows, occasional documentaries and, of course, top 20 videos. So what's to go ballistic about?? I don't think this channel tries to pass itself off as a the serious voice of the black community - or does it have an obligation to do so. Black folks are not its shareholders. The media in general has dumbed down its programing in a desperate attempt to compete in a culture that craves a quick fix and settles for superficiality. Write on! |

I have to agree with your take, Cynique, that BET is probably no more vapid than the rest of the channels you mention but I think they draw more young black viewers? And they have their attention for longer periods. Maybe one day I'll take a shot at TMZ or black sit-coms. I don't watch much television and I don't do much social commentary. When I do watch movies on the television it's old movie classics or sports. Last week I watched The Cabin In the Sky. The story behind the story was great. The director was a guy the studio brought in from New York. He didn't make a movie for a whole year but was on the payroll. They let him pick his own project (not the norm in those days) and he decided to do his first movie with an all black cast. |

Quick Kitty, get my lawyer on the phone, she stole my lines *lol*. That was a very interesting read. I like the way she used images of The American Gangster to illustrate her point about BET being a drug dealer. After reading her piece, I've come to the conclusion that those of us that voice a concern about BET's programing are the little guys. |

The BET Award shows are "specials", edgy free-for-alls that only appear once a year. BET's lackluster day-to-day format does leave something to be desired but I think the writer of the article overreacted and read things into something meant to be innocent and fun. I also think the impact of BET is overrated and from what I've seen, an attempt is made to give a balanced view of things via the programming that spans a fairly broad spectrum of subject matter. Have these BET critics ever had a steady diet of the blah pap featured on the Disney channel? The Maury Povich show is much more disgraceful and damaging than BET when it comes to exposing the degrading side of black culture, what with how it provides a daily forum for loud indignant girfriends and baby's mamas to confront each other over shiftless black males eager to shirk the responsiblities of fatherhood. Has it been observed and documented that black kids are glued to TV hours at a time, totally captivated by BET??? |

Carey, now dat was a POST! You should at least put it on your blog. Cynique, God love her, just don't know nothing about real black folks--like she is always insisting. She's just such an egomaniac she can't admit she doesn't know something. C'mon girl! Lighten up! |

Chris, I generally run my blog post through here and also post them at my blog site. If someone finds errors or something that I need to correct I can edit it over there. the system is setup so I can change whole paragraphs or delete any parts of the posts. I don't use a spell check over here but over there I do. Most of my posts come off the top of my head and sometimes when I read them back to myself they are horrible. See, this is a tough house over here and I know "some" will keep me on my toes. So yeah man, come on by, the vibe is distictly different. This post was highlighted on a big hitters site. My man has advertisement and everythang. You will not be the first person from TC's to stop by - many do. Some change their names. You can even comment under anonymous if you feel like slummin'. I look forward to hearing your take on thangs. I love brave souls that are not afraid to go against popular opinion. I think you fit :-) |

Yeah Yvettep, and it's all your damn fault *lol*. Btw, it takes one to know one *sticking out tongue* A few months ago I asked a simple question about blogging and you couldn't wait to give me my first hit. Yeah, you and that kitty are no better than your common drug dealer :-). Come to think of it, it was a conspiracy. there's another chick in here that couldn't wait to send me a template. I gotta kick this thang. I was expecting an important phone call the other day so I left a small message on my phone for that person. Well, my daughter called while I was sleeping and left a message that said: ..."oh no dad, now your blogging on your phone" :-(. |
