This is a serious question. What percentage of the population do you think has serious mental issues? I mean people who can't go a week without getting into an altercation with a stranger, people who are just depressed, or who eat too much, drink too much, spend more than they make, don't take care of their own children. It seems whenever I'm around more than a handful of people someone exhibits some form of aberrant behavior. Usually folks will laugh it off, or chalk it up to a bad day but I'm becoming more and more convince a significant portion of our society is just plum loco. I don't think I'm not exaggerating either. We all know the person on the job who is just mean and nasty for no good reason. The business person who takes advantage of others at every opportunity. The person who is never satisfied or happy. The woman who curses out their children in public, the guy who throws his empty soda can on the sidewalk while standing 10 ft from a trash can. I would guess better than 10% (that is assuming I'm not too far gone to make the observation) |

I personally wouldn't call people like this insane, Troy. They are products of the times, - frustrated and self-absorbed and insensitive and irrational. What I do think is that too many young people place no value on life and they cannot see past their noses. They are ignorant and misguided and have to end up doing time in the joint before they develope foresight and an awareness of the consequences of their impulsive behavior. And even then, this does not always reform them; just makes them more incorrigible. I guess some people would say that me and my paranormal adventures are crazy, but all I know is that s h i t happens... |

"frustrated and self-absorbed and insensitive and irrational" = Crazy I'm not sure "crazy" is a technical term (If I were not so jammed up I would look it up now), but I think of insanity as being completely out of touch with reality. When a JebBush say his family ties has nothing to do with his success - that is insane. However he and his brother are probably crazy too. LiLi, you laugh at 40% but I'm seriously entertaining the possibility that at any given momement 40% of us are walking around here undiagnosed lunatics. Oh yeah Cynique, if you are hullicinating then you may be crazy too, but if you are seeing things that are actually there but the rest of us are not in tune to see, then you may be more sane than most. If those apparitions start telling you to shoot you neighbors well.... |

With the criteria you’ve given Troy I’d say 90% or more 'have issues'. I’d even have to add myself in there from time to time but I’m not gonna say in which area(s) LOL. |

All of us have mental health issues. All. Some of us are higher functioning than others. Other folks' issues are adaptable in our current environment, so their personalities do not get counted as "aberrant." Others have found creative and socially acceptable outlets for our issues, so again, don;t get counted. Many folks would be quite different if they did not medicate themselves through prescription pills of one sort or another, high risk sporting hobbies, video games, coffee, writing books and making movies, or any other number of "acceptable" behavior regulation. Some folks who now are functioning OK or even excelling will exhibit more "serious" mental issues under other circumstances or life setbacks. We're all "loo," Troy. Surely you're giving our craziness an outlet right here! LOL |

I have the feeling that Troy wasn't looking for some mystical meaning of craziness. We know the fool he was talking about. Yeah, it's the person that shows outward signs of mental instability. Shit, we knew the mfer he's talking about, they make you walk on the other side of the street. They also will cuss you out if you don't give in to some of their requests like "buy me a drink". Come on now, we all may have our moments of insanity (doing something we know is not right but still doing it) but I don't think this is the person Troy was talking about. In our culture we might say, "that is crazy" or "that motherf**ker is nuts" or "that's an ignorant mfer" but we all know the type of crazy Troy is talking about. Having defined my crazy, I'll say 10% are there. But hold up, if I walk around a little or venture into the dark places of some cities, the numbers rise. And I am telling you ...old, young, eight to eighty, it don't make no difference. |

If you mean pscyhopathic, I'd say it was less than 1%. If you mean nuerotic, I'd say, in America, at least 95%. Personally I adopt the position of my good ole Uncle Clicki on the matter-- --everbody is crazy--'ceptin for ME! |

Troy, you're getting touchy in your old age. I remember at first here you used to be so happy go lucky. So carefree. Now every little thing is getting to you, like people being assholes. I think you are forgetting everything that has been happening in this country for the last ten years. Folks is under lots of pressure. Maybe it's time for that move to Jersey.... |

Time brings change. We all become more dicriminating as we grow older. When it becomes apparent that many of our peers did not mellow with age it's only natural to become annoyed by their immaturity. There are, indeed, a lot of loose cannons out there. Since when did it become a no-no to gripe about them. |

I have to say, this is a classic conversation, wisdom, humor and insight. Yvettep, I agree we all have mental issues some of the time, but it seems an increasing number of us have issues all of the time. Agreed some of us are higher functioning, and can better cover it up. But crazy behavior is now even financially rewarding. People don't seem to care to conceal it -- indeed they are proud of it. The popularity of reality shows like the Flavor of Love show this. Was there another time in history of this country where the dysfunction of a character like "New York" could be so financially rewarding (ignoring criminal enterprises and the slave trade)? Cynique speaking about loose cannons. Here is a link to a video taken during Book Expo American this past year. It is 10 minutes long but watch the whole thing http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/1/47492.html#POST128029 it is a perfect illustration of crazy. It is crazy on so many levels I don't even know where to begin, or have the time to explain. Chris, Carey thanks for the laughs! Montclair, NJ here I come! |

And don't forget all of the hysterical Americans who swallowed what the Bush administration told them about Sadam Hussein being responsibile for 911. Now Dick Cheney admits that this claim wasn't true which, in effect, is saying that fueling paranoia about terrorism is how Bush & Company won approval for invading Iraq and starting a war. Then there's how Osama bi Ladin and Rush Limbaugh are both losing their minds because Obama is reaching out to Muslims. And, of course, "Bo" is driving Michelle crazy because she always has to to walk him and he tears up magazines. And so it goes. |
