Since the weather has warmed up nicely over the last couple of days, I've opened my windows to enjoy some fresh air. However, my people are outside gambling, blasting music, cooking on open grills, arguing, laughing, just really hanging out. I can recall an earlier time where I would be excited to be hanging in that kind of environment. That was a long time ago... Today this activity and behavior just gets on my nerves. I really just want to hear myself think. It is almost midnight now (on a Monday). About 2 hours ago, I looked out of my window and noticed some women sitting on my stoop. I shouted from my office window, "ladies, ladies, LADIES!!" until I was finally heard. I then asked them, "Please don't sit on my stoop". They looked at me like I was being rude saying, "He act like he owns the street". They moved but not without giving me lip. [side bar: Whenever I ask people to get off my stoop the women usually talk back, men rarely do]. I guess most of y'all can't relate to having to get into altercation because someone feels they have the right occupy your property without permission. Of course tomorrow I'll have to clean up the mess they leave in front of the house. Otherwise sanitation WILL give me a ticket. People have absolutely no problem leaving liquor bottles and any other stuff they no longer need all over the street -- completely ignoring the trash cans just a few feet away. I could call the police, but who wants to do that -- I have to live here. I'm in a foul mood. Fortunately, my bedroom is on the opposite side of the house and I can get some quiet. I'll have to close the door to my office though... |

Troy: "They moved but not without giving me lip. [side bar: Whenever I ask people to get off my stoop the women usually talk back, men rarely do]." That's usually because the men are smart enuff to fear the possibility of your calling the po po on'em or the possibility of your bustin' a cap off up into their arses. But the chicks figure because they are women and you are a man, you should allow them to do WTF they want to do. |

Is this the guy who is always sulking about how black women degrade poor misunderstood black men??? Puleeze. I don't think the fact that the women were able to take their time leaving the stoop because they didn't have warrants out against them, is a bad thing. It just shows that they are more law abiding. |

I then asked them, "Please don't sit on my stoop". (I thought in New Yawk dat was kosher. Do you live in a brownstone, a single family dwelling or an apartment?) However, my people are outside gambling, blasting music, cooking on open grills, arguing, laughing, just really hanging out. (You should try my hood. Add pimping, prostituting, selling dope, gangbanging, fighting, and being stoned out of their minds to it. You are a lucky man if that'sall you got to deal with--by the way, you would probably have some of that in the burbs, too--loud parties, teenagers screaming in cars up and down the street, lawn jobs) I guess most of y'all can't relate to having to get into altercation because someone feels they have the right occupy your property without permission (Been there, done that. Having to evict crackheads from the garage, drunks passed out on the front lawn etc. Be glad you don't have to get into confrontations that could wind up in violence) and I can get some quiet. I'll have to close the door to my office though... (I still can't imagine why it is you think you can live in Manhattan and get peace and quiet? Isn't that what New Jersey is for?) |

I'm sure there have to be some trade-offs for enduring the annoyance of black folks being black folks, Troy. I guess you have to appreciate that your neighborhood could be full of white folks debating about whether to throw a burning cross on your property. |

Chris, while I may be able to relate to your neighborhood. I'm sure (God I hope) most of Black America does not have to live this way. Sorry I left off the crack heads and working girls in my hood No, living in New York, I have no expectation of complete quite. Even in the country crickets can keep quite a racket. What I'm talking about is the prevalent disrespect we show for each other. I live in a single family brownstone. It was never "acceptable" for you to sit on someone's (especially a strangers) stoop without permission. Sort of like me bringing a chair and sitting on your front lawn... Cynique, of course I'd rather be in place where the neighbors where not scheming on burning a cross. Regarding the sisters -- they just tend to be more mouthly. Dude are pretty chill unless you try to punk them. In which case they have to save face. If you give a dude an out by asking nicely they typically step -- asking nicely often does not work with girls/women. I doubt it has anything to do with warrants. Neighborhood has been pretty chill since that night. But is is about 30 degrees colder... |

LOL Troy - I also think that if you ask nicely a brotha will respect another brotha's wishes, especially when it comes to his property that he knows he works hard for. This thread makes me wanna go read Hickson's Ghettoheat!!! LOL |

LOL @ Troy! Well, I have never lived in a neighborhood like this. (Nor like Chris's colorful hood.) But I have lived in a neighborhood full of wealthy college kids. How about young people making out on the hood of your car? Or peeing in the bushes just outside your window? (Try breathing in the smell of spring air mixed with urine on a May evening.) Or leaving you piles of vomit on your front stoop? Or scattering used condoms and empty beer cans on your lawn? Or blasting Van Halen and Pink Floyd at 2 A.M. when you have to wake up early the next morning for work? Or leaving their tattered couches and bins of discarded clothes on your curb when they leave for the summer? |

Chris, while I may be able to relate to your neighborhood. I'm sure (God I hope) most of Black America does not have to live this way. (If you would get out of your little world and look around, you would find that much of the WORLD lives this way. Bad as I may have it, next to Baghdad, Kabul, Kingston Jamaiaca, Nueva Loredo Mexico, it ain't NOTHING! Jesus man! You claim you grew up in Harlem. You probably got some stories that make mine look like Mother Goose. Face facts. You are old and your nerves can't stand it anymore MOVE!) But I have lived in a neighborhood full of wealthy college kids. How about young people making out on the hood of your car (AMEN, Sister Yvettep. Every St. Patrick's Day in Soulard, an upperscale WHITE neighborhood, their are scenes of violence and debauchery which, if they took place in the Hood they would call out the National Guard. What do they say? Boyz will be boyz. Move to the Country, Troy. There you can have peace and quiet--all you will have to worry about is serial killers, the Militias and the Klan--not to mention wild animals kicking you in the ass!!!) |

AMERICA is stressful, dammit! You got recession, depression, jobs lost, evictions, school shootings, drug addiction, swine flu, terrorist threats-- We are the mineshaft canaries! We get it first and worst. Almost every Black Woman I know has been losing her mind the last few weeks. Something BIG is getting ready to go down. I'm talking something like the last chapter of WATCHMEN! |

This country is in a state of managed chaos. And it's mostly the fault of greedy white men, adhering to the capitalistic axiom that "enough is never enough". Add to that the epidemic of inefficiency in high places, and stir in the Christian religion which has become the end stop of the pathway to hell paved by the good intentions of people calling themselves Christians. |

I have to come clean here.. The other morning I stepped out on my front porch. From there I could look up and down a tree lined street that was bright and peaceful. Birds sang. Squirrels and rabbits scurried about (yeah, rabbits have started moving back into the inner city, along with ravens and hawks and possums and other fauna) This same street has reverbrated with gunfire and the screams of victims and onlookers I went around the corner to Fairgrounds Park. It was beautiful. Quiet. Ahhh, the bottles that would be in the grass come evening. The crack vials and junkie syringes. The pimps beating their women... I thought to myself "This is a GREAT neighborhood. All them NIGGERS are messing it up." I was ashamed But only momentarily.... |

If we were allowed to kill about two thousand of the worst miscreants, male and female, here on the North Side of St. Louis a lot of the sh*t would stop. |

Chris says, "If you would get out of your little world and look around, you would find that much of the WORLD lives this way." Not true. While the places you describe are quite bad, nothing compared to my neck of the woods (or so I've read), MOST people live without the level of stress one would encounter in Harlem. Sure it is MUCH better now. People are not really worried about being mugged every time they set foot in the street, like back in the 70's. And it will probably get better in the future... ------------------------- Speaking about swine flu. They say about 2 to 3 thousand people die, in NYC alone, from the flu! They are closing schools behind swine flu in NYC, which as a death toll of one. Why is there not an uproar over the seasonal flu? ------------------------- Speaking about animals. The other night I observed a raccoon walking along my backyard fence. The only other place I've seen a raccoon was in a book! Sometimes I see blue jays and cardinals in the back yard. When I was a kid the only birds I saw were pigeons. Occasionally, I can see sea gulls from my office window. |

That's why I turned down a flat offer in Harlem and moved to Berlin. How can you NOT think if you are a writer? BTW, I would have at least moved to Striver's Row.... |

Carey, I've got a regular nature preserve here as well. One of these little critters have been munching on my strawberry and lettuce plants. I purposefully put them up by the house, right under the window, to discourage visitors. But these animals have no fear, apparently. |

Along with all types of birds, Racoons and possums and rabbits roam freely in my neighborhood, not to mention skunks who in the summer time are apparently very easy to irritate as the stink up the neighborhood every night. There have also been reports of coyotes and foxes in other nearby areas. |
