To Whom It May Concern: "Having spelling and grammar errors in a review that slams a book for spelling and grammar errors is at once completely hysterical and breathtakingly sad." Concerned Reader

This email really struck me. Beside be a gross exaggeration (i.e. perfect material for a discussion baord post). This person obviously did not read the book. Trust me the reviewer was kind, the book realy needed editing. To the authors credit, he is actually book reeditted motiviated in part by the review. But that does not excuse a review with typoes and other error -- assuming that is the case. I'm too tired to re-read the review right now the lack of editting on the review would be my fault... I get emails like this from time to time, but "Concerned Reader" like they other will take time the time so "slam" someone else. Rare is the email that offer to help... The Inner-City Interludes review my be read here: http://aalbc.com/reviews/inner-city_interludes.htm

What kind of help are you looking for, Troy? There are some pretty bright, skilled folks on this board who seem to have an investment in the larger website's continued success. Also, many of us are linked to other boards and list and can pass word along that way. Whatcha need, brother? LOL |

{smile} Thank you. You are right Yvettep and I have recently reached to and tapped the expertise of a couple of the board memebers - yes there are some smart and motivated folks here. But I need a lot of things more sleep being one of them... I just reread my last post -- sheesh. Fundamentally, I need an editor, a web developer, a sales person, an account, a staff writer, and an assistant to start. Of course these professionals come with a price tag that I can not afford -- yet. Over the past few years I've reached out to other profesionals in effort to pool resources but this is very tough to pull off. I will say however my more extensove collabration with Ron Kavanaugh (mosaicbooks.com) for example has helped tremendously. Not only are we both more effective the result is a much better offering to our clients. Another strong relationship is with Kam Williams, again the arrange benefits us both but also benefits our vistors even more. There are several others as well. But I digress... In the adsence of monetary transactions I can usually work out an amicable barter deal. |

Renata, I don’t know what your education level, experience or background is, but this job listing came across my desk this morning and I thought about your post here. Often, copy editors and editors don’t reside in the same city or state as the company they work for. These days a lot of their work is done electronically. Also, lots of times publishing companies do seek freelancers and contract works for hire. So this might be something you may care to look further into. Good luck. Position: Copy Editor Psted: 3 May 2007 Offered by: Hachette Book Group USA (formerly TWBG) Benefits: Health, Dental, 401K Duration: Full Time Location: New York, NY Requirements: Hachette Book Group USA (HBG), a division of Hachette Livre, the third largest book publisher in the world, seeks to fill the position of Copyeditor - Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for the Managing Editorial department. Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, a division of Hachette Book Group USA which publishes some of the best children's books in the industry seeks top-notch copyeditor who is as enthusiastic about children's books as he or she is about dangling modifiers. Responsibilities include copyediting and proofreading books from manuscript to blues (including reviewing original artwork and sketches) in a variety of children's genres: young adult, middle grade, picture book, board book, and novelty. The position also requires some managing of freelancers. In 2006 we've had a record-breaking number of bestsellers, including James Patterson's Maximum Ride II, Stephanie Meyer's New Moon, the Gossip Girl series, the Cranium FunFolio series, and the Clique series. Our books are also among the most lauded in the industry, from National Book Award nominees Harlem Stomp! and Luna to New York Book Show winners Haters and My First Art Book and Easel. Requirements: The ideal candidate should have a bachelor's degree, at least three years' experience copyediting (preferably in book publishing), the ability to juggle multiple projects under tight deadlines, an excellent command of grammar (a copyediting test will be given), a keen eye for book design and illustrations, a thorough knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, and the ability to write comprehensive style sheets. About Our Company: HBG's product lines include adult, illustrated, religious, children's and audio books under the Warner Books, Little, Brown & Company, Little Brown Books for Young Readers, FaithWords, Center Street and Hachette Book Group Digital Media imprints. HBG USA's bestselling authors include David Baldacci, Michael Connelly, Malcolm Gladwell, Ansel Adams, Robert Kiyosaki, David Sedaris, Walter Mosley, Nelson DeMille, Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen, James Patterson, Nicholas Sparks and Cecily von Ziegesar. HBG classics include: The Catcher in the Rye, The Bridges of Madison County, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, To Kill A Mockingbird, the Arthur children's books, and works by photographer Ansel Adams. HBG USA also sells and distributes books for other publishers and has a warehousing operation in Indiana and customer services and other support services in Boston. E-mail: maria.suarez@hbgusa.com Address: 237 Park Avenue New York, NY 10017 Special Instructions: To apply for this position, e-mail your resume and cover letter. Please reference NPMK/Copyeditor on the subject line. Hachette Book Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Job # 3769

Troy, I would love to help you out and that "bartering in exchange for services" thing sounds QUITE appealing to me! I'm sure we could work something out, if you like. I do freelance editing as I've mentioned on the board. So I would be willing to help out with that and proofreading your copy for you in exchange for some promotional type things. Of course my writing would come first as I am under contract, but between deadlines I would welcome the opportunity to help you out so let me know... |
