Yesterday evening I attended, in response to a formal invitation, a reception at the Divoll Branch of the St. Louis Public Library held in honor of the opening of "The Color Purple" on Broadway.

By the way former St. Louisan Kingsley Leggs is playing the part of Mister. He is a talented actor singer and dancer with a lot of experience in musicals and he should have the audience humming the songs and hating black men as they leave the theater--

But I digress.

I was the only male there, as you can guess. A lot of cutting and sceptical looks were shot my way when I first came in--my fault: I should have left my twelve year old wife at home wit' de chilluns or at least let her ride the horse instead of making her run behind me, stepping in the horsey poop--

But I digress again.

As you can expect, the dread name of Oprah was invoked--she done worked such hoodoo on her myrmidons that they were referring to the movie as her movie and not Spielberg's--I didn't correct them I thought it was just desserts for that rat

We had a fine, lively discussion. Part of the movie was shown. We had refreshments, which I ate after I saw that everybody else ate them--

It was a Color Purple party and I am a black man, obviously the lowest form of life according to Oprah/Spielberg/Walker--

Anyway the interesting thing was that there was universal agreement that the book was much better than the movie.

What did y'all think?

Roxie:

It is a musical--and still features all the incest (violence rape etc) of the original.

Tough job

Good perspective Chris.
