I came across this interesting article on a flag designed by a couple in Baltimore not too long ago. It's supposed to be made for and represent the African american people: http://www.nbccongress.org/black-catholics/african-american-flag.asp IMHO, I think if the Native Australians have their own flag, it would'nt kill us to have our own. And lets be honest, many of us don't feel anything when we brandish the stars and stripes anyway. And it looks better than the red, black and green banner we all "know and love". :P So, what do you guys think? |

Interesting...it is fine. I am, however, already used to and would dare not give up the Red, Black, and Green! The history is too personal, embedded in my own history as a Harlemite. Growing up in Harlem, with the annual African American parade, I have owned and embraced this flag as long as I can remember! http://www.theodora.com/flags/new/african_american_flags.html |

The flag doesn't strike me. It's too abstract and has no focal point. It is not an image that stays with you. |

I've seen the flag Yukio presented but not the one Roxie posted. Anyway, I love ALL the flags! Better yet I like the idea of the flags itself b/c it helps bring UNITY!!!! I also think in would HELP if we used the American flag- because we are TRUE AMERICANS- and just CHANGED the part where the stars were at! Maybe have Afro-American or African-American written across it..... |

naw....no socalled american flag; it would detract from African American's nationalism, and indeed defeat the purpose in having a flag in the first place. |

Sorry Yukio, but NOTHING will change the fact that we are Americans! There are no such things as "African-Americans" anywhere BUT America, because our history STARTED IN America. So its common sense not to simply make up something, but rather connect our flag to our *actual* history! Other countries flags are not simply "made up". They are in reference to national symbols, wars, or have some other kind of meaning in that COUNTRY! .......but anyway this idea is up for debate! |

Afroamerican: Your perspective is one of many, as is mine. Your perspective is valid, as is mine. So, I'll respect your position. Yet, on this question of "actual" history and something being "made up," you are off the mark. You know not of what you speak. One, it seems to me, needs to have a better sense of history, in order to discuss this. Traditionally, nationality pertains to land, territory...sovereignty. Historically-- not in concept but in practice--many US blacks and Afro Caribbeans haved perceived themselves as a nation within a nation...this is what is called black nationalism in a general sense. Whether one conceptually agrees or not with this understanding of black existence, there is a long, long "actual" history of this in the US. The red, black, and green--Garvey--is part and parcel of this history. I am a believe in such a conceptualization, and it is embedded in an "actual" history, whether you agree or not with the concept.

Yukio, I find it amusing how everyone claims they ALONE "knows the truth" yet don't even have enough common sense to come up with a concept that actually WORKS FOR THE PEOPLE! I could care less about creating a "race" flag to counter Neo-nazi ones or a NATIONAL flag! I'm speaking of an ETHNIC Flag that relates SOLELY to the Afro-American people! Something that "we" can look at and see OURSELVES in......... Until these revoluationary idea can connect with the MASSES they are going to continue to be worthless! |

Afromamerican: Not sure why your post addresses me. At no point have I either mentioned neo-nazism nor have I said that I ALONE "know the truth." In fact, I said, actually the first line, "Your perspective is one of many, as is mine. Your perspective is valid, as is mine. So, I'll respect your position." Thus, it seems, your rhetoric is misplaced. In addition, this thread is about an African American flag not connecting with the "masses," however related and/or relevant the latter is to the former. I wasn't talking about a race flag. Again, this is not what I have said...I find it amusing how you have put words in my mouth and egregiously criticized them. Finally, I see African Americans as an US ethnicity and a nation within a nation. Again, thats my perspective. If you want to disagree that is your right. If you want to engage my ideas, I would prefer you do it with intelligence and knowledge, because your common sense is non-sensical.
