I've been introduced lately to an interesting podcast, "Addicted to race" http://www.addictedtorace.com/ The site describes it as "a podcast about America’s obsession with race, with a specific emphasis on mixed race identity and interracial relationships."

There is no such thing as "race" when you grow up in NORWAY where everyone is snow white....or in BLACK AFRICA where every human being is black.
I've noticed from my own life...that it's only when you bring different groups of people into the same habitat does race become an "obsession".
And it makes sense that it would---being that the first law of nature of "self-preservation". The people are forced recognize their "race" and to either loath it (blacks) or protect it (whites).
But in a country like The Congo or even South Sudan---there is no race.
The conflicts are "ethnic" or "religious".
Or in Serbia....it's the "blue, green, gray eyes" against the "brown eyes".
The OBSESSION, I think, is with "differences" and people's fear of differences.

The term "white race" did, indeed, have its origins in America, where Caucasian ethnic groups wanted to separate themselves from blacks who were relegated to being "low man on the totem pole". |

The Bolsheviks and other Germans used the term "white race" or Aryan, which means the exact same thing. A lot of ancient literature shows Europeans describing themselves as "The fairer race".
When Norweigians and Swedes talk about Italians in literature, they certainly called themselves "the fairer skin", "the whites".....and just called the Italians by the word "Italics" or "darkies".
Africans have always called themselves "the blacks" and they will use their tribal name (Ekoi) and national name (Nigeria) but no COLOR word---but when speaking of all Africans, they will often say "we, the black people".
When foreigners come to Africa---they especially will start calling themselves "black" in front of other blacks, so that what is being said can be understood even in code.
Some words:
Kamit/Egypt (black)
Pharoah (penis, later sceptor that is black)
Sudan (black)
Aithiop/Ethiopia (black woman)
Nubia (black womb)
...also show ancient people using color to describe themselves.
