If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to check out this superb essay in Sunday's Washington Post titled "Breaking the Chain: An African American woman reclaims thesexuality that history tried to steal from her".
It's written by Lonnae O'Neal Parker and does a great job of capturing the elusiveness of many of our parents, who often were remiss in helping us grasp realistic ideas of our sexuality as youth. But then she breaks it down, going back to slavery and so much more.
O'Neal Parker has a book coming out soon. I tremendously enjoyed the essay and will definitely look into her entire book.

That was a really great article.
I loved it!  I'm going to get her book.

She had one mistake though.
It wasn't "Nefertiti" in TEN COMMANDMENTS.
It was Queen Nefetari.
They are two entirely different women.

Actually, I had a problem with the message of this well-written article. After decrying the history of black females being degraded by lustful men and subsequently stereotyped as being oversexed vixens, the author ends the article by coming full circle, bragging how she uses her feminine wiles to manipulate her husband into getting what she wants from him, implying that there's a thin line between being a wife and a whore. The truly liberated woman doesn't use sex to get things from a man. She, instead, uses a man's body to satisfy her sexual needs. Furthermore, nowadays with sex so plentiful, from what I hear, if the sex aint free, the guys have no qualms about movin on. |

It sounds good, but will any of this get us our first female in the white house? I'd rather learn how Hilery puts "IT" down. That's power.. and that, too, would be breaking the chain.
And, Cynnique, I could not agree with you more. EVERY word of your post was right on the money.
Also, what I learn from books and articles like this is that we have never been shielded/defended/protected by black men. NEVER EVER. I know there was a time when they couldn't do it, but damn! I quess my question to you, Kola, is, you often call for black men to support us, but can they? They never have, so do you think they'd know how?

Black women have to GIVE BIRTH to the men they need.
Black women have played an integral role in TELLING their sons not to protect, love and honor women who look like themselves.
You've seen it all your life.
The black mother protecting her rapist son.
The black mother asking her son to bring home grandbabies with "good hair".
The black mother making excuses for her abusive husband.
and as well,
the black woman, who thinks like Tonya, but didn't give birth to any sons.
CERTAINLY, the society plays a huge role in shaping and turning black men against us.
But the MOTHER still holds the ultimate power.
And the problem with AFRICAN WOMEN and Black women----is that they have always placed the black man above the family, the children, the food, the village, the hut------EVERYTHING.
He says cut up the daughters vaginas---she does it.
He says stone the woman he raped for witchcraft---she goes along with it.
Black women have traditionally advanced their self-hatred through their SONS.
The only difference is that she has 2 self-hatreds.
She hates herself for being a woman.
And then she hates herself for being black.
Now we have the Mixed, Biracial woman who hates us for a set of new reasons.
And while the Mixed Biracial woman is having BABIES.
Many women like you, Tonya, ARE NOT.
So the cycle continues.
Black women have stood up for THE RACE, but they have never
ever
stood up, as a group, for themselves.

Speaking of Black female sexuality has anyone on this messageboard been reading Zane?
She writes WONDERFUL books about Black sexuality!
I'm currently reading "The Sex Chronicles". They are very short stories 3 and 4 pages long and very gooooooooooooooood!
